Don't let my kids see this because 2 out of 3 of them are local-ish so we get to spend lots of time together, but I think one of the best things we did as a couple was move away from family, my family in particular, because there were a lot of unhealthy relationship issues with my parents and they were also quick to demonize DH.
Once we were half a country away, it was sink or swim and believe me, we sunk for a good, long messy time, but 35 years later, we both acknowledge that if we'd been near family, we never would've lasted AND would have been stuck in economically & socially repressed areas.
But to answer the OG question, I'd seen it happen, but not with the frequency you seem to have in your group currently. I wonder if the pressures of covid and the political unrest recently are contributing to an increased fracture of social contracts.
