Tips are prohibited for our hospital valets.
We only go to one restaurant with valet parking (we aren’t very fancy LOL), and it’s usually around Christmas. DH tips them, but I don’t know how much.

It's been awhile since I used a valet but I think I did $5 at drop-off and $5 at pick-up. I try really hard to avoid needing to put anything in/out of the car while the car is parked there, but if I do have to send someone back to the car, then I would give a few dollars then, too.

tipping is not out of hand.. low wages are a big problem. in countries without tipping culture.. the minimum wage is a living wage I don't tip to help supplement anyones wages. I tip so that my car is safe overnight and not broken into. Or so that we can get picked up at the front door instead of hiking in the snow and rain.

I don't use valet parking. After visiting 3 hotels at 3 different cities, I find it costs $25 to $50 to park. There’s no choice sometimes. There isn’t self-park at the hotel, there are no public lots that allow overnight parking, and street parking is limited to two hours. So… valet it is. It’s $30/day, plus tips. Yeah, I never use valet parking if I have an option. If I am by myself, I almost never have a car (I think the only time I did was on a work trip to Provo, where I really needed one!), and if it's the family, we're usually staying somewhere with at least a self-parking option. I used to stay at the Residence Inn in the Pearl in Portland a lot when my kids were smaller (because there was, until recently, a Pure Barre right there, and they had reasonable room prices for the family before they all started needing more space); you could pay $$$ for valet, or park in the public lot right next to it for $10 a day. Honestly what I don't like about having to tip valets or bellhops is having to have cash on hand and handing it over -- I'm always awkward about it. It's a lot easier when you can leave it for people (like housekeeping) or just sign it on your CC tab (like at a restaurant) .

We tip when we drop off and when we pick it up. Usually $5-10 each way. And yes, we tip if the valet has to retrieve something from the car that we forgot. Same. The higher amount if they’re especially fast or I can see that they’re slammed and working hard, and also when it’s Texas hot. Though, occasionally we can’t tip when we drop it off because we have forgotten to get cash as we almost never have any on us. We are great at remembering when we travel because we stop and get cash for all of our tipping. (For a longer stay we have little envelopes we pre-prep with a little notes to make it easier and help us not forget a day). But sometimes with an unexpected dinner out we forget to stop first.
