When we travel, we usually don’t rent cars in cities and rely on Uber, etc. instead. Or when we are driving, we generally self-park. It’s been a minute since we stayed somewhere with a car and mandatory valet. I googled valet tipping norms and the recommendations vary widely. (Some say $2-5 only at pickup only and some say $10 each time they do anything.)
So, peas, what do you tip a valet? Do you tip at drop off, pickup, or both? If you need something from your vehicle and the valet has to get it because you’re not allowed access, what would you tip?

We tip when we drop off and when we pick it up. Usually $5-10 each way. And yes, we tip if the valet has to retrieve something from the car that we forgot.

DH tips when he drops off the car as he has found they keep his car close if he does, then again when they bring it back. I usually just tip when I get my car. Depends on where I am using a valet, but usually $10-20.

I tip $5 each time, both parking and when picking it up when it’s mandatory to use valet parking. And I would also tip $5 if I forgot something in the car.

Ok, I feel like I'm in the clear. I've been doing $5 at drop off and pick up. Not the best tip but not outrageously cheap either lol.

We've always just tipped when leaving the place. I never knew people tipped when they arrived too. I need to discuss this with SO. We don't valet much, but once in awhile we do.

I feel cheap. I don't do valet much but sometimes at the hospital for appointments. It used to be $7 an I would just give them $10 at pick up. Now it is $10, I haven't used it yet but I guess I will do $15 at pick up. I have never tipped at drop off.

I don't use valet parking. After visiting 3 hotels in 3 different cities, I find it costs $25 to $50 to park.

I don't use valet parking. After visiting 3 hotels at 3 different cities, I find it costs $25 to $50 to park. There’s no choice sometimes. There isn’t self-park at the hotel, there are no public lots that allow overnight parking, and street parking is limited to two hours. So… valet it is. It’s $30/day, plus tips.

We tip $5 to $10 at drop off and pick up. I don't remember ever leaving something and having them get it, but if we did we would tip the same then too.

It never entered my mind to tip at drop off. Usually $5 at pick up. I try to avoid valet when I can. I have never left something in the car that I had to ask a valet to fetch for me.

Wow I have no idea people give that much ,valet parking is a great gig. We give five pick up, I believe that tipping is totally out of hand in this country.

I used valet at the hospital all the time when DH was there. I'd tip $5 at pick up, nothing at drop off. I know they got to recognize me, I was there so often. I noticed a lot of people didn't seem to tip at all. If the weather was bad, I'd tip $10.

When I take my parents to the casino, I use valet and tip $5 when picking up. I probably should tip also when dropping off but I've never done that.

tipping is not out of hand.. low wages are a big problem. in countries without tipping culture.. the minimum wage is a living wage

Usually $5 when I pick up the car or whenever they retrieve the car. I didn't even realize tipping when dropping off was a thing. Now, if I was at a hotel and they were unloading my luggage, loading it on a luggage rack etc then I would likely tip at drop-off too.

tipping is not out of hand.. low wages are a big problem. in countries without tipping culture.. the minimum wage is a living wage I think a huge problem is the minimum wage varies TREMENDOUSLY across the country and frankly the areas with the highest minimum wage also tend to have the highest tipping. Many states exceed $15 now - well above a typical minimum wage in other countries. It's greatly inflating food costs and then adding an "expected" tip now of 25% and it's easy to see how people think the tipping culture is out of hand. I have no issue with a societal change away from tipping and to fair compensation. But it's really simplistic to just say we're tipping to make up the difference - my state exceeds the top European country's minimum wage - and people are absolutely expected to tip 25% above that. Chart on OECD minimum wages across world: www.statista.com/chart/3501/the-countries-with-the-best-minimum-wages/Chart on variability of US minimum wage www.ncsl.org/labor-and-employment/state-minimum-wagesThen you add on municipalities with minimums approaching or exceeding $20 an hour: www.nerdwallet.com/article/finance/highest-minimum-wages

Oh and to OP, we typically tip $5 at drop off and pickup. But I DETEST mandatory valets in general, and have been caught a few times when I realized a hotel I've booked has mandatory valet. My husband is still old school and carries cash, but I don't usually carry it, so if I'm traveling solo, I need to remember to grab some (usually out of his wallet) before leaving. I probably go to an ATM 3-4 times a year max. I had no cash at drop off and then had to scramble to find a freaking atm in a new city is annoying before picking up my car about 10 hours later. If they could at least make it electronic, I might not be so bitter about tipping valets.

I hardly ever have cash and just now discovered there’s no ATM in walking distance (except inside a bar that’s closed until tonight) so I have nothing to tip the valet when I get my car and can get to an ATM. I’m going to ask the front desk if there’s any way I can get cash from them. Ugh.

tipping is not out of hand.. low wages are a big problem. in countries without tipping culture.. the minimum wage is a living wage Didn’t tipping start to insure good service, not to supplement one’s income? ETA - I did tip more during Covid times because those workers had to work during hard times. And I feel tipping just never went back to “normal”.
