I worked at McDonalds all through high school and freaking LOVED it. I was a shift manager for a year after hs. I can still say it was my favorite job ever. In fact, I often say that I want to work there again before I die. I got all of my friends and siblings to work there with me and they ALL hated it, my sister lasted 2 days, ha!

Many years ago I worked at Olive Garden. Sometimes as a hostess and sometimes as a server. Back then, there were only 3 table sections for servers. OG wanted you to give good service, therefore, only 3 tables. I was there mainly for the social aspect, and I was slow. I would always give away 2 of my tables to other servers . Usually if they saw the schedule, my 2 tables were snagged up by servers who wanted them. The famous bread sticks were kept in warming drawers. We were pretty much allowed to eat as many as we wanted. At the bottom of those drawers was all the butter and garlic. So we would drag the ones for ourselves in the bottom to get all the butter and garlic. Then dip them in alfredo sauce. After a while I had my fill of them, and for years never ate anything even similar to a bread stick anywhere.
eta - I loved working there. It was a fun group.

No and I’ve never worked in a restaurant or any kind of service industry. My first jobs in high school and college were things like a file clerk at a doctors office, a receptionist at a law firm and some super boring data entry at an accounting firm…I probably would have enjoyed working in a restaurant more…

No,I have never work fast food or any food establishment. In high school and college I worked for a family owned shoe store (so 7 years working there), then after I graduated I worked as a lighting designer for a major lighting company. Then I worked with builders and helped them with their new builds. Then I owned my own home decor store.

I've never worked at any restaurant, fast food or not. But in college I worked in the dining room/kitchen for all four years I was there. We got to eat for free for the meals we were working so it was an excellent job for a broke college student. I did just about everything at one time or another...checking people's cards at the door, serving, working the industrial dish washer in the back, cleaning up after the meal... Believe it or not the dish washing job was the best one even though it was kind of gross sometimes... But it was because of the woman who was in charge of that area. She was like a grandmother to all of us, asked us about our classes, our families, made sure we were taking breaks, eating enough, etc. I worked for two summers in high school at our local university where they would hold camps. All of my friends worked there too so it was fun except when you'd have to work breakfast at 7am. They would feed us too so that was nice being broke high school kids. I always ended up in dishwashing or doing pots and pans whereas my friends usually got to serve and flirt with the hot campers. I always got the short end of the stick!

I just saw something that said 1 out of 8 Americans have worked at McDonalds. That report was what inspired this thread.

I worked at a restaurant much like McDonalds from the time I got my “working papers.” Right before 16…
I worked til I graduated at 17, and became the breakfast manager. That only lasted about a year and a half or so (it was miserable and literally hand to mouth!)
It was ok, but the one big positive that came from it was when my POS uncle left my aunt (who had a full time minimum wage job and their two daughters- yet again and didn’t pay child support) I was able to immediately create a job for her, and hire her to do the breakfast/salad/veg prep for the day for a few hours before her full time job. She says that’s what got her through, and able to keep her house. Amazing to think that 20ish hours a week were that impactful. So thankful I could do that for her. She stayed long after I left.

When I was in high school I worked at a pizza by the slice place. It was local. Not a chain. I chose order at the counter since that's the closest option.

Drive-In where you had curb side servers. You could also walk up to a window to order and receive your food. I only worked two days! My job was cleaning multiple windows and carrying ice. Probably would have evolved to grill cook or curb but I didn’t stay to find out!

I never worked fast food. But I did wait tables at a diner style restaurant in Chicago when I was in college there. And then when I moved back to Michigan and was in college here I worked as a bartender on Friday and Saturday nights in a club atmosphere. So I've done service jobs.

My first job in high school was as a Domino's Pizza girl. How sexist is that? They hired females to answer the phones and take orders. We also made the pizzas. The guys delivered them. This was in 1988. Not sure if it was just our store that was sexist or if that was a common occurance.

I worked at a Dairy Queen that served hot food in addition to ice cream when I was a senior in high school. Shortly after that I worked at the Sears candy/popcorn counter. Not fast food, sort of similar, but worse actually.
Dairy Queen was fine other than the owners creepy son who worked there and liked to "accidentally) brush up against all the girls. Ick. One reason I didn't work there very long. But at Sears we had all the difficult customers.

The next summer i applied at a store in the mall... service merchandise... it was better then fast food... plus they let me have the time off i needed... I worked at Service Merchandise in the jewelry department during the Christmas holidays. I loved that store.

I've never worked fast food.
I babysat fairly regularly (once or twice a week) throughout High School. Usually on a Friday or Saturday night or Sunday afternoon. By the time I was 16.5 -17, I was occasionally babysitting for a weekend (Friday about 6:00pm-ish until Sunday late afternoon). The Parents were always within two hours of home.

I worked as a waitress for one summer in college, but it was a sit down restaurant. IIRC, I made $2.15 an hour, plus tips. Weekend nights were good tipping nights, but I hated the weekday lunch crowd. I often didn’t clear $5 a hour then.

I worked at Wuvs-- similar to McDonalds for about two weeks in college. It was while I was waiting for a better part time job to be finalized.
I thought I would work the counter or drive through but I worked in the back "dressing burgers." Remember the I Love Lucy chocolate factory scene? Well it was a mess like that. My hours were 11 am-1 pm-the busiest time of the day.
"Did that guy say NO mustard or EXTRA mustard? Well, I'll just put pickles on it instead." No one got any of the orders right-it was just crank out the burgers and let the customers deal with it after they got home with the wrong things on it. It was a long two weeks.

I never worked any kind of food service.
In high school, I worked at a local pharmacy owned by the father of a boy I went to school with. In college, I worked summers and Christmas holiday at Eckerd Drugs in the cosmetics department. The summer before I started graduate school, I ran the day camp program for the local YMCA (40 kids) .

I worked at Shoney's Big Boy (now just Shoney's)... (it's like a Denny's or Perkins) My dad worked there back in the 80s as a regional manager. Then I worked there starting as a hostess/cashier then quickly went to waitressing. Then when I graduated high school went into management. I left then and started a trade college for my short but awesome travel career. Edited to add, I too had to learn quickly how to add change in my head. Funny enough the customers were pretty good in helping me learn. Mostly older folk. Lots of long days and late nights. We were famous for the late night breakfast bar (catering to mostly drunks). I would start a shift at 4pm and get home at 4am. Exhausted. That is also where most of my fun memories came from including the one boy that broke my heart. lol... I should have ran the other way! But damn he was good looking. Funny now I think he must be around 62ish... I can't even imagine what he would look like today.. I was probably one of those drunks! Shoney’s and Perkins were our go-to’s!

My first job was at a Mr. Gatti’s pizza, it was a place order at the counter restaurant. And in college to make extra for our wedding I worked an additional job, part-time at Pizza Hut. It wasn’t counter ordering but I do consider it a sort of fast food restaurant. I worked for DH at Pizza Hut and he worked for me at an MHMR Group Home plus one other I forget what it was.

I quit that job because is required to me drive 15 minutes, work for 2 hours, go back home. and then come back for the next 2 hr shift a few hours later. Uh no. this was not mentioned when I was hired.

From 15 to 19 I worked at Long John Silvers, Ivars and In N Out. I lived in north CA, WA and southern CA during that timeframe.
In N Out was a second job while also working for a school district. At 20 I started working in an office doing accounting, then finance/bookkeeping by the time I retired.

No I have never worked at Maccas or any other fast food restaurant. When I was a teenager in the 80s, I worked as a checkout chick at the local supermarket, as did pretty much all of my friends. A couple of friends worked at K-Mart.
30 years later, most of my kids' friends worked at one fast food outlet or another. DD worked at a patisserie (arseholes) and DS worked at a kebab shop.

I did man the sandwich station in the dining hall at college, does that count? Otherwise, no restaurant experience. I worked at a grocery store, a bank, Victoria’s Secret as a Christmas season temp for the discount, as an or tech, a nurse, and now a nurse practitioner. Not a lot of jobs for 30 years of work experience. I like to stay put as long as I can.

I worked at a Steak 'n' Shake drive-thru back in the day. It was horrible. I was underage but they made me work over + no one would ever take my place so I could take a bathroom break during my shift. Good thing I didn't have the old-lady bladder then that I do now!
I also worked at a very small (8-table) cafe in college where I was the hostess and busser.

I worked at a dairy queen in Highschool, but it was one that also sold fast food. Back then not all had the full menu. Some were just ice cream. It was probably one of my favorite jobs, but that could be that I had several friends that worked there also.
