Poll will allow 2 responses in case I didn't cover all possibilities.
I worked at place that customers placed the order at a counter and then picked it up from the counter when ready.
I have never worked at a place that had a drive through.

No. My allergist and doctor didn't want me working in fast food.
I worked at Mervyn's (open open open) and Best Buy in college.

One of my first jobs in high school was working at McDonalds. Man, was that stressful! I remember being exhausted when I would come home. Lots of work for a small paycheck.

I worked at Taco Bell for seven years (4 locations in two states - both franchise and corporate-owned) - it wasn't the best job ever but it was a paycheque

Other. I worked in a kitchen at a retirement place. Residents could either eat in the dining room (and order like at a restaurant) or have food sent to their apartments. I delivered food to apartments, washed dishes, and a tiny bit of food prep (like cutting cantaloupes into wedges.)

When I was at LSU, my dad was transferred to Norfolk, VA so I spent 2 summers there. I didn't know anyone so I got a job at Heap Big Beef (kind of like Arby's) I had a ball ~ it was mostly college kids with some seniors from high school. I worked the 6PM to 11PM shift and we had so much fun I rarely took a day off. $1.35 an hour as a cashier back when you had to figure out the change.

Not at a McD's but a place like Wendy's. Except it was called Andy's. They had the same square burgers, chili, salad bar, breakfast, etc. It was in HS. I went home smelling like pickles and french fries. I will say I hated working Sunday nights. The church folks would come in and not pay one mind to their little angels. Those sweet things would run around grabbing the cracker packets off the salad bar and open them. Then crush them into the carpet. Made clean up so fun.

I worked at Hardees when I was in college. Probably the worst job I've ever had. LOL It was right across the street from the main campus, in the midst of all the college bars. It was open all night, so I will let you use your imagination at what that job was like at night. LOL and I only worked there one year, and that was more than long enough. I feel like my stint there gave me a whole different view of how to treat service workers that has stuck with me the rest of my life.

I worked at Shoney's Big Boy (now just Shoney's)... (it's like a Denny's or Perkins)
My dad worked there back in the 80s as a regional manager. Then I worked there starting as a hostess/cashier then quickly went to waitressing. Then when I graduated high school went into management. I left then and started a trade college for my short but awesome travel career.
Edited to add, I too had to learn quickly how to add change in my head. Funny enough the customers were pretty good in helping me learn. Mostly older folk. Lots of long days and late nights. We were famous for the late night breakfast bar (catering to mostly drunks). I would start a shift at 4pm and get home at 4am. Exhausted. That is also where most of my fun memories came from including the one boy that broke my heart. lol... I should have ran the other way! But damn he was good looking. Funny now I think he must be around 62ish... I can't even imagine what he would look like today..

I started working at Hardee's when I was 14 or 15 and worked there until I went to college. The summer before going to college I also worked at Tyson foods on the evening shift. In college I worked at Wendy's for a period of time, along with food service at the dorms, hotel housekeeping, and Applebee's. I usually had two jobs at a time during college.

I started working at Hardee's when I was 14 or 15 and worked there until I went to college. About the same here. I started there when I was 16 (they wouldn't hire anyone younger than that) and I stayed there until I was 20. I became a supervisor when I was 17. I enjoyed it, because I met so many great people and made new friends. The only thing I didn't like about working in fast food was the unreliability of many employees (calling in or just not showing up). It was a good time in my life.

I worked at 2 local restaurants when I was younger. Diners I guess you could call them. Never worked fast food, never loved in a city with that option.

I have never worked fast food or a typical restaurant but I did work at a frozen yogurt shop when I was freshly out of high school. I didn’t last long and the experience firmly planted me in the retail world until I graduated college.

Tim Hortons in Canada. And yes if you have heard of the terrible work conditions, it's true. I never want to do a minimum wage job again without an union. I'm now at a grocery store NoFrills with an Union. And honestly, not as much crap gets thrown at you with an union rep involved. There's other things I don't like but Timmies was so much more stressful. Also I have been at my NoFrills for almost 2 years now and I've had several raises. Not big, but at least something! The manager at the Timmies I worked out was supposed to do yearly reviews and a possible raise. Never got a review the whole time I was there. And customer service was sacrificed for drivethru times.

My first job at 16 was at A&W in the mall food court. Later in college I spent one summer at McDonald’s and another at Dairy Queen. Both of those had a drive through.
I also waited tables at two different places during college/grad school.

I worked at Mama's Pizza in high school. They had a buffet, large dining area and arcade area (late 80's). I took orders at the counter and phone orders for delivery or pick up. I also had to keep up with the salad bar on the buffet and package it up/clean it every night when I closed. It wasn't the greatest but it was a job and I needed the money...They've since closed the location I worked at but I recently found out there is one still open about 20 minutes from me & they are still old-school with the dine-in area, buffet and arcade.
I also worked at a sno-cone stand in high school - fun!

I was a cashier/ “hostess” at a pizza place where people would order at the counter, get a number for their table and someone would run the food out when it was ready. I never worked at a place with a drive through. It wasn’t horrible but it also wasn’t awesome because the management sucked after our store manager got promoted and someone new came in. I met DH there. He worked in several different restaurants or hotels with restaurants up through college.
We owned a coffee shop/cafe for a couple years but I never personally worked in it. I just did the bookkeeping.

I've never worked at any restaurant, fast food or not. But in college I worked in the dining room/kitchen for all four years I was there. We got to eat for free for the meals we were working so it was an excellent job for a broke college student. I did just about everything at one time or another...checking people's cards at the door, serving, working the industrial dish washer in the back, cleaning up after the meal... Believe it or not the dish washing job was the best one even though it was kind of gross sometimes... But it was because of the woman who was in charge of that area. She was like a grandmother to all of us, asked us about our classes, our families, made sure we were taking breaks, eating enough, etc.

Thankfully I never had to work fast food. I worked as a lifeguard, at a plastics shop and made signs, I was a bank teller, a cashier, a nursery “professional”, a substitute teacher and now I’m a teacher (for the last 26 years).

Never worked fast food but I did work fast casual, first at Bennigan's as a waitress then later at Chili's as a waitress, bartender, trainer, regional trainer and unit manager.

I worked at a local chain sandwich shop for 6 months, where I met my now-husband when I was 16. We knew each other for a year before we started dating. I then went to work at a sit-down restaurant for a few months, then on to Subway for five years. I didn't quit that job until I was 22 and had my daughter. I had two jobs by that point, the other in a doctor's office doing dictation and filing/following up on insurance claims.
Working with the public like that was great training for being a nurse. It really helps you develop a thick skin and a realism about how people treat other people.

No, I have never worked in any sort of restaurant or food-based business at all. I never even scooped ice cream, and that was a very popular job choice with teens in my area when I was in high school.

I worked as a server in a bar during my senior year of college. Most of my shifts were 98% serving drinks, but everyone once in a while, I’d have a meal shift. I hated it but the tips were great.

My first job was at McDonald's making $3.35/hour. I also waited tables for a bit while in college. Those food service jobs definitely kept me in school and in search of a career where I didn't have to work for other people.
