After reading the 'What do you tip for valet service', I wondered what people tip for standard, daily hotel housekeeping services.
I think housekeeping is more work than valet service. Yet, I would tip about the same ($5). (I rarely travel so I'm wondering if I'm out of touch.)

If it is just me, I generally tip $5 a day. If it's my messy family, often more than that (don't lecture me, I do pick up after them or have them pick up -- they're still gross).
My friendly amendment question is -- do people tip differently when you show up and it turns out that the hotel doesn't do daily housekeeping? I've had that happen a few times.

I usually don't stay at fancy places (just need a clean room to sleep in). I stay in places like Hampton Inn, Hilton Gardens, Best Western, etc.. Many hotels now, don't change the sheets during the duration of a guests stay. So it is a room tidy up, refilling toilet paper, cleaning up bathroom if necessary, making the bed, replacing towels, etc... The bed linen change is done on check out day.
Daily I leave $10 On checkout day I leave $20

I don't tip for days where I receive no service. I tip approximately $4-$5 per day serviced. If I'm there for 2 nights and didn't receive interim housekeeping, $5 would be my top tip.

We do $5 daily for the days we receive basic service in a standard hotel room. For above and beyond, or when we have a larger room or suite, it would be more. And we are super neat, if we weren’t or had children it would likely be more. Eta: the other tipping thread reminded me that we have small plain envelopes we purchased just for this. When we are staying more than a couple nights I write a short note and put money in for each night of our stay. Helps us remember, gives an opportunity to say thank you, and makes it more obvious the money is for them.

I haven't stayed in a place for a long time that has had daily service. The only time I've stayed in hotels recently is when my BFF and I go wine tasting. I don't leave a tip if I'm not receiving service.

Since Covid none of the hotels I've stayed at do anything to the room while you are staying in it unless you ask them to. Even with 4 kids (we usually have to get two rooms) I make sure we leave the place pretty neat (usually because I'm checking to make sure we didn't forget to pack something.) I tip $20 no matter how many nights we stayed. I also leave a few dollars for the continental breakfast person on our last morning... I had a job once making up rooms for people that traveled with some program through my college (dorm rooms) and the smell of some of those rooms in the morning when we had to go in and pull off the sheets to set the room up for the next person We didn't get tips. Before Covid we stayed in a suite sort of hotel room with a kitchen one time, and I forgot to put the 'do not disturb' sign up, and they loaded and ran the dishwasher which was kind of weird... ETA: I didn't used to tip but then I read a non-fiction book called The Maid by Stephanie Land. There is also a mini-series based on the book with Andie Macdowell in it. Anyway, ever since reading that book, I can't not leave a tip...

I wonder what other Brits/Europeans would say. It would never occur to me to tip in a UK hotel. In Europe I tend to leave a few Euros at the end of a stay; I know we tip higher in the States.

$5 per day then $20 at the end of my stay if it’s more than 3 days. My sister-in-law’s MIL is a hotel housekeeper and I know how hard she works and how few and far between good tips can be.

Technically not either, but we live in Germany and most of our travel is in Europe. We don’t tend to tip housekeeping at all, unless there is something exceptional. We also don’t tip the people who bring our luggage to our room. Sometimes the concierge if they arrange something a bit extra. Someone mentioned the continental breakfast person above - I wouldn’t tip at a breakfast buffet in Europe. Maybe a small tip if it was room service.

We seldom want housekeeping services. And most often keep the Do Not Disturb sign on our door. We will gather up any trash and sit it outside the door. On check out, we gather up all trash, strip beds and put into the bathtub with used towels. If a table is really messy, I will wipe it down with a Lysol wipe. I try to leave the room(s) as clean as I can. I will leave a tip of $15 when we leave. We seldom stay more than 2 nights at a hotel.
I worked as an assistant housekeeping supervisor at a Hampton about 20+ years ago. We had about 20 rooms (I think) a day to clean. At the time, we were allotted 20 minutes or less per room on a check out and less on stay overs. (To many years have passed and I can't remember exact times or number of rooms.) We had to put clean sheets on stay-overs unless indicated not too. I would go to all the check outs and strip the rooms of linens and trash to help our housekeepers . 20 minutes may seem like a long time but not when you consider all that has to be done. I'm sure things have changed since I worked in housekeeping, especially since Covid. Housekeeping is a hard job and I appreciate what they do.

In a hotel I like to leave money out daily. That way there doesn't need to be any division of a full stay's worth of tips if different people cleaned the room on different days. And then if no one cleans the room on any given day, the money stays where I left it.
And I will leave extra the last day, since that day will be more work given that it's a turnover day.
As others have said, the amount I leave can vary based on how much extra assistance/attention I/we required/requested, how many of us are in the room, if we were extra messy (think beach day with kids---sand everywhere), etc.

We don’t leave a daily tip because we don’t have them come in while we’re there. Maybe $10 at the end of our stay.

I tip $5/day when I’m traveling with my family. It’s just three of us and we’re not messy but do get daily housekeeping service for fresh towels, etc. (there never seems to be enough places to hang up three bath towels).
I travel *a lot* for work and never get housekeeping during my stays because it’s just not necessary. I do leave $20 at the end of a stay (two or three days). I stay at the same hotel every time - I was there every week May through December and every other week since - and they know who I am. They take excellent care of me and go out of their way to accommodate random requests that come up, etc. The tips are less about housekeeping and more about thanks for making this much travel as comfortable as possible.

I have never tipped housekeeping staff anywhere other than the US. It would never occur to me. Before our first trip to WDW in 2006, I was told the rate should be $1 p.p.p.n. I think we observed that that first time, but maybe not subsequently.

$5 a day if I don’t put up the do not disturb sign and want daily service. But, most of my travel is solo work travel and I’m there Mon-Fri. I put up the do not disturb sign and leave $20 on checkout day.

I only tip at the high end hotels we stay at, as they usually go above and beyond just making the bed. I tip at the end of our stay. If we are just staying in a random hotel one or two nights, I put the do not disturb sign on and dont want housekeeping in my room.

Nothing. None of the hotels we stay at have daily housekeeping anymore. Agreed The only exception I made was once when I accidentally trashed a sheet, and then when we were in Mexico City i left a tip daily because the maids were so thoughtful and thorough. My Mexican friend scolded me and said I left too much, but I sure did get extra good service. 😁

$5-10 per day.
When we used to stay as a family of 5 in a room (did not happen often) - we would leave $100 at the end of the stay.

We tip, but the amount depends on length of stay. Usually around $10 per day, per room (we usually have 2 connecting rooms or a suite). We are not slobs. We throw out our trash, put our towels in one pile, put items back where they belong.
My son is currently in a job training program for adults with developmental disabilities. One of his rotations was as a housekeeper in a large conference hotel. Please be generous to the housekeepers. They work so hard and are not paid well for the disgusting things that they deal with. To say that some people are complete pigs is an understatement. People leave the rooms in a complete mess, human waste on toilet seats, etc.

I don't wanna sound cheap, but I have never tipped. I worked in a hotel and never seen tips either. This was a long time ago, so it never occurred to me this was a thing. I don't usually stay at high end places either.. Hampton Inns, Comfort Inns.. not budget places but your average $100 or so a night. Clean, and usually free breakfast. I don't think I ever heard of it until I saw posts like this on here at some point. In fact, I was traveling with friends last summer for a long weekend and tipping never came up then.
I will say, there isn't much work to clean up after me or family, we are pretty anal about leaving the place decent. Towels are all together by the door, we pull up the bedding, leave all trash by door.
But will keep this in mind for our New York trip... more money... aggg. lol

I’m curious when all of this tipping started. I worked in hotel housekeeping in college and don’t recall ever getting a tip. I also wonder if it’s regional?

We don’t tip daily or otherwise for housekeeping in the UK. When we stay in villas on holiday/vacation we’ll leave a decent tip at the end of the stay for the maid service which includes making beds, cleaning the bathrooms, washing up etc. and we’ll leave something for housekeeping after a hotel stay abroad outside the UK.

As others have said, most of the hotels we stay in don’t have daily service any longer. On top of that, I rarely have cash on me. So unless I remember to visit the ATM and then find a place to break a $20 into smaller bills, I probably wouldn’t leave a tip.
When we’re eating out, if we don’t have cash for a tip, we don’t use the valet. We park on the street and walk. Can’t really do that with a hotel.
We are very neat people and never leave a mess in a hotel. Towels hung up, trash in trash can, etc. I do feel badly when I don’t have cash for a tip, but at least I can make their job as easy as possible.
