I look at Instagram mainly on my laptop and I don't know if this is the problem or not. Here is the scenario: I view an Instagram post and in the post they show something I like. Written across the post is the comment, "Type SHOP in the comment box and I will send you a link where to purchase this item". So, I type SHOP in the comment box and all I get is an automatic response that says "Get Updates". I click on "Get Updates" and it just shows up as a comment I made. What am I doing wrong?

I don't have that on my feeds, but maybe they are ads and you can directly type in their name in a google search to be sure they are legit?

That is something I am seeing more of and don't care for. They want you to comment so that they can send you a link to whatever it is they are promoting. What they are actually doing is attempting to drive up the number of likes and comments that they have as well. Most of the time I can go directly to their website (most have one) and find the information there, especially if they have a LTK (Like to Know) account.
I know I am not explaining that well so perhaps someone a bit more IG savvy will jump in and do a better job.

The links they are sending you dont work on a desktop. But you can see them on your phone.

Even if they aren't using affiliate links but say are linking to articles they have written, there is no engagement in the comments it's all just link link link.

I hate this new trend! I know they are doing it to drive up the interaction on their posts.
I also just go to their account, find the link for their LTK or Amazon store front to see the product.
But it frustrates me so much that I will not buy off that link. I will close out and go search it on Amazon and buy it without using their link - so they do not get any money from me. Petty Betty here. Most of the time, I don't mind using their link/store front so they get the income from it. But when they start making me do stupid things like typing SHOP for them to autosend me the link, I'm out.
