Whether that was 18 or 21 or whatever?
Mine is doing an EMS internship (this is her planned career) and loves doing the rideouts, where she is on the ambulance and gets to help in a lot of ways. (They are trained to do some things, but obviously nothing that is a possible safety hazard or anything.) They get to do 12-hour shifts. Well, she turned 18 a few weeks ago and she's been looking forward to being able to do the full 24-hour shifts that they can do once they are that age. She did her first one last night, and has been very excited. She'll be done in about another hour. Sounds like they got really lucky, where they were very busy for the first 13 hours and then actually got a full night's sleep! Pretty much ideal for her.
But yeah, this was what my unconventional kid was most looking forward to! (Oh, and PS, this is all volunteer!)

Both of mine were counting down the days till 18 so they could vote, and 21 so they could drink legally. Especially dd because she's the youngest in her grade/year, so everyone else got to the milestones before she did.

They both got tattoos shortly after turning 18. My oldest just turned 21 and she looked forward to purchasing her own booze.

Being able to sit at the Blackjack table with their dad. Although I think Dad looked forward to it just as much as they did. 😁

Voting! And my 21-year-old wasn’t looking forward to drinking (they’re in college and they drink anyway) BUT they were looking forward to going to the various Washington restaurants that are 21+ because they are licensed as bars.

My poor daughter had the lamest 21st birthday. She turned 21 in April 2020 during lockdown. We ordered food and took pics. Later in June when restaurants opened again we had a nice dinner and she got to order a Margarita!

Especially dd because she's the youngest in her grade/year, so everyone else got to the milestones before she did. Oh, I totally forgot that mine was, too! DD turned 18 not long before our primary, so she made sure to get registered at 17 years and 10 months! She turned 21 in April 2020 during lockdown. That IS kind of sad! Glad she got to celebrate a little later! I forgot that my girl is wanting to do a tattoo, too, but she is (thankfully) waiting until she is really, truly 100% sure what she wants. She thinks she knows and is in the process of getting recommendations, but she's not moving ahead quickly. At least what she thinks she wants is pretty socially acceptable, but I actually fear it might be too tame for her. It's more like something I would get (if I were so inclined) rather than her, and we are very similar in a lot of ways but definitely not quite! But I prefer this over what she used to think she wanted when she was younger - a dancing crouton dressed like Mr. Peanut. Yeah. As I told her, I can't "forbid" it but I can give her my opinion!

DD was 17 when she went to college, and there was a burger place that all her friends went to that was 18+ because they allowed smoking. She couldn’t wait to turn 18 and get a burger there.

For my kids, as it was with me, it was getting their licence. You can't get your licence here until you're 18 (or 17 in a couple states). It wasn't drinking, because they were doing that at 16 or 17. And for DS it wasn't going to pubs etc, because he had a fake ID for that (I didn't find that one out until later). I love that some of your kids were looking forward to being able to vote - that's awesome!! DS wasn't in the slightest bit interested or excited about being able to vote. In fact, he asked me why I had registered him in the first place. Well son, voting is compulsory here, so you must register to vote or you'll get fined! DD is very engaged in politics, and would have registered to vote even if it were not compulsory. RosieKat I wonder how long it will take for the novelty and excitement of 24 hour shifts to wear off for your daughter?!

I'm thinking, don't get burned out before it's even your real job! But then, she's already helped a ton of people and been integral in truly saving a few people's lives, so who am I to say don't overdo it? (But does anyone else think it's nuts to have EMS people have 24 hour shifts? It's not great for patients and of course, then those employees have to drive home after potentially being awake say, 26-28 hours or more.)

Oldest son joined the Air Force right at 18 and had been planning that for a few years. Middle daughter started college at 18. Last kiddo is just looking forward to getting her driver's license at 16. I have worried about what she wants to do. She seems lost sometimes.

I would have concerns about being treated by someone who has been up for 24+ hours, and I don't want to be sharing the road with someone who is driving home after a 24 shift. So dangerous!

My husband is a firefighter/paramedic who works 24-hour shifts and some nights are rough! He can work a 72-hour shift if he picks up an overtime shift, like he did last week. He worked 8am Tuesday - 8am Friday. It feels like he is gone FOREVER when he pulls a 72. If she ends up working as a firefighter/paramedic/EMT, she will get used to 24-hour shifts, and love sleeping in her own bed even more!

Obviously, every department is going to be different, but in the 4+ years that my husband and I have been together, he has only gone one shift without any sleep, and that was last month. He was on a fire that reignited twice after they originally put it out (suspected arson), and he ended up putting water on the fire for over 10 hours, 10pm - 8am. He wrapped up his report and was home by 9:45am. I cooked him a quick breakfast and put him to bed! He slept from 10am - 3pm. Most nights on shift he is woken up 2-3 times. A "good" night is 0-1 wakeups, and a "bad" night is 4-5 wakeups. I know there are stations in bigger cities that never sleep and thankfully my husband works for a small-ish city that does allow the firefighters to sleep some.

Well, she is going to work another 24 shift this weekend, at a really busy station, so we'll see how that goes! The regular shift just naps in the recliners and don't bother setting up bedding, if that gives you any indication of how it'll probably go.

DS was in the Coast Guard when he turned 21 and I sent him local hard cider. He said he'd already been drinking but thanks. DD #1 got her first tattoo on her 18th and DD #2 got her drivers license (her choice). They are in their late 30s/early 40s now and I am still finding out things they did as teens that I didn't even know about and wouldn't have expected until they were of age.

All the of mine were counting down to going to the cigar lounge with my husband and on their 21st it was happy hour with us and a few if their friends.
Were kind of happy hour pros so it's a thing.
Mine said not much changed and it was kind of disappointing
