I'm only coming across threads that are a couple years old even though I thought there was a recent one. I was on dog food advisor to get reviews, but finding they're recommending some grain free foods so not trusting that too much.
Have a year old pup who recently came off her puppy food. She was eating purina pro plan puppy lamb. I heard about possible issues with purina so I went to royal canin because we've had dogs on their prescription food before. First ingredient though is corn...and she's itching her ears and licking her paws. So i'm thinking might be food related. I know people say chicken is a problem but there was chicken in the lamb.
Anyway long story short, vet originally recommended the usual brands when she was a puppy, Purina, Royal Canin and maybe Iams or something. I'm looking to see what the peas recommend and where they get their best info from. I'm feeling very overwhelmed by all the info out there about dog foods.

There's so much info out there. My pups eat FreshPet but it's been hard to find so I'm slowly switching them over to Jinx. They seem to like it. My pups did NOT like Farmer's Dog. I tried several times but they didn't like it and when they did eat it, they got sick.

Our foster dog was very irritated and itchy and we switched her to a limited ingredients food (these are usually grain free) and she’s great now. So maybe don’t dismiss that. We have her on the HEB store brand so if you’re in Texas, you can try that. Otherwise, any limited ingredient food as these are generally free of common allergens.

I have a Boxer, so she needs grain. I feed her Purina Pro Plan Beef and Rice. No issues.

Fromms or Oreijen (spelling) are both quality brands with quality ingredients. Neither are cheap, but they are the only brands I will feed my dogs.

George is prone to ear infections, we switched him from Iams to Purina Skin and Coat on the advice of our vet. He also gets Farmers Dog. He's been on the FD for over a year now and has not had an ear infection since July. He's happy and healthy and pushing on my last nerve at the moment as it's trash day so he's "yelling" at everyone going down our street as both the trash and recycle guys are here.

I would guess the issue is the corn before the chicken.
Our lab has been fed Blue Buffalo all her life. There are several different lines of it, but we use one with grain in it. She hasn’t had any issues.
Know that if you feed raw, it can be an issue with the elderly and those with weakened immune systems if they are around the dog.
I have a friend who is a vet and she swears by the Kirkland brand from Costco.

I have had 5 dogs on Fromm over the years. Three still are eating it. Great, great food. Don't be tempted to switch around flavors though. They don't need it. I did, and found out one of my boys is allergic to chicken. So, we can only eat the flavors without chicken. All kibble is small so any size breed can eat it. My big boys (75 lbs each) eat the tiny kibble fine. The flavor the three dogs eat now is Pork and Applesauce.

Interesting, just a mix of the two different foods together? One of mine has an upset stomach recently (eating dirt) so we were topping his food with a sprinkle of boiled hamburg. Now they both look at me if there’s not a sprinkle of it on every meal. One of the vet techs said her rescue came to her eating Farmers Dog! The food choices are so overwhelming!

We feed a commercial raw food ( Viva Raw) and our Berner thrives on it. We rotate between beef, turkey, rabbit, and duck - half ground and half chunked. He doesn't do well with chicken. I used to prepare a custom homemade raw diet for him (the "menu" was created by a canine nutritionist specifically for him). That was great, but time consuming to source and assemble everything and when I changed jobs, it wasn't sustainable. Viva Raw has been a great alternative and he'd doing very well on it.

Our 16 month old German Shepherd/Bernese Mountain Dog mix eats Fromm. Unlike the other poster, I do sometimes change flavours to give him some variety. Fromm food is made so you can switch around the flavours without any gastrointestinal issues. He does seem to prefer the fish flavours.

I'm only coming across threads that are a couple years old even though I thought there was a recent one. I was on dog food advisor to get reviews, but finding they're recommending some grain free foods so not trusting that too much. Curious about why you are hesitant about Dog Food Advisor recommending grain free foods. Dogs don't need grains or carbohydrates of any kind. Grain free foods have only been shown to be an issue in a few specific breeds of dogs when dog food manufacturers replace grain with large quantities of cheap legumes and/or pea protein instead of quality protein sources. It does seem that the pea/legume proteins are the issue, rather than just being free of grains. Vets have a vested interest in recommending low national quality brands (Purina, Hills, Science Diet, etc.) that sponsor veterinary education, but rarely are vets well educated in nutrition. Dog Food Advisor and Whole Dog Journal are my go-to sources for finding high quality dog foods. The Forever Dog book is a great resource too. Chicken allergies/intolerances in dogs have exploded in the last few years. Our vet has said it is becoming so much more common and wonders if it is something to do with how chickens are raised for animal feed. We have a two year old yellow lab who has a severe intolerance to chicken...took us more than six months to get it figured out and to get her digestive system stabilized after we eliminated chicken from her diet. There are so many young dogs in our training classes that can not consume anything with chicken in it that our trainer no longer uses anything with chicken in it. That being said, it is also possible that your pup is intolerant of corn. I would suggest you find a high quality, limited ingredient food. Our pup eats Stella and Chewy freeze dried and/or frozen raw food in mostly beef and salmon. All grain free and she has never been more fit and healthy. Feed your dog the best food that you can afford on your budget. Orijen, Acana, Fromms, Merrick, and Honest Kitchen are all very high quality, widely available brands.

Know that if you feed raw, it can be an issue with the elderly and those with weakened immune systems if they are around the dog. Can you explain this? Feeding your dog raw food is no different that bringing home a raw chicken or a pound of ground beef and preparing it in your kitchen. You wash your hands, work surface, and serving bowls in hot soapy water after preparing/feeding. Our current dog eats mainly raw frozen and reconstituted raw free dried and I know many people who feed their dogs raw food. I have never heard this before. What issue is there?

We use Whole Hearted from Petco and the dog loves it. We rotate through the flavors from chicken, beef, lamb, and salmon. They do have some grains in them. The vet highly recommended that his dog food have some grains as grain free has a known association with heart disease. And is a title less expensive but maintains good health with good ingredients.

I have had my dog on Primal Freeze Dried his entire life. It is a bit expensive, but he is worth it. You just add hot water to reconstitute it and mix it up. Easy and quick. And one of the benefits is less poop that is of good consistency and does not reek.
I recently decided to try Farmer’s Dog because Chewy kept running out of the Primal. I am on the second batch of Farmer’s and I don’t think I will be feeding it exclusively, but my dog seems to like it well enough. I will probably end up feeding one brand for breakfast and the other for dinner. I do find that he poops a lot more volume with the Farmer’s food. And since my dog has always been one that walks and poops, leaving me a line of nuggets to pick up, I really prefer that there is less of it. I don’t know why he walks while he is going, but he has done this his entire life. At least he knows that he must stay on the potty pad.

But you don’t wash your dogs mouth with warm soapy water. If there is meat bacteria on its mouth/paws/ears/etc and someone with a compromised immune system pets the dog or is licked by the dog, it can be an issue. Our Lab is a therapy dog and some of the certifying organizations don’t allow it with their working dogs if you work in an institutional setting.

The food choices are so overwhelming! lol, so George is a giant breed, Great Pyr. He's supposed to get 4 cups of food per day. What he really gets is 2 cups in the morning which he ignores until about mid day. at 7 not 7:01, not 6:59 7:00 he will come stand by his bowl and do the I'm starving poor pitiful me look until we grab his bowl, put the farmers on the bottom then put a cup of dry on top. He will then commence eating the entire bowl of food. If we do not jump up at 7 and do his bidding he will continue pestering one of us until his farmers is produced. Farmers can be served on its own, we just mix it with his dry to make it last longer. When he had surgery in 22 and we had to keep him tranquilized I got him wet food to bury the meds in. Some of it he'd hoover right up but others he'd look at you and go seriously? He seems to like the farmers however.

We use Fresh Pet. We have tried a lot of different foods but always come back to Fresh Pet. Our dog loves it and will consistently eat it. He will not, however, eat the grain free version.

What does your vet recommend now? Vets will recommend food they sell in all likelihood. Probably Science Diet. Vets are fantastic resources for a lot of things, but what food to feed is probably not one of them .

My Sailor gets Sundays for Dogs for breakfast and training (it's super easy to break into small pieces) and Pet Plate mixed with a little goat milk for supper. Both are subscription but, IMO, worth the price.
