I learned only yesterday that Patrick Mahomes and wife Brittany named their children Sterling and Bronze. I have no eye rolls left to give after that. If it makes you feel better Bronze is a nickname. He’s actually Patrick Mahomes III. Sterling is Sterling.

Sterling is not an uncommon first name here (Texas). Some of it is history. Ross and Frank Sterling were two of the founding partners of Humble Oil (now part of ExxonMobil), with Ross going on to become Governor of Texas. And once people hear a name they like, it catches on and tends to be used over and over.

I helped a student named CHRRY. Her mother gave her no vowels. Was that pronounced Cherie or Cherry? When I asked the student how she liked her name pronounced, she said "Cherie."

Was that pronounced Cherie or Cherry? When I asked the student how she liked her name pronounced, she said "Cherie." That makes sense if spelling is not your best skill. I suppose her parents didn't hear the middle e when the name was spoken. You would think they would check though, wouldn't you?

And Sir Stirling Moss (spelled differently) was a famous British racing driver.
