Our 2007 Maytag Frenchdoor Fridge decided it is done with us! I have called our repairman to see if he can coax it back to life but am looking for a suggestions regarding new ones. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated - the good, bad and ugly! I've been told to steer away from Samsung and GE, and I tried to log into Consumer Reports but their website isn't cooperating today!
Thanks in advance for any suggestions! Looking for ice and water dispensers

I have a kitchenaid and like it for the most part. I got it with a small dent, so they took a percentage off

I'm interested in this!
I am wanting a french door fridge. My daughter has a Frigidaire and loves it. I really want white, and that is so hard to find. I hate stainless. Nothing in my kitchen is stainless.

Based on my experience, I'd steer away from LG. We had the largest French door model. The compressor for the ice machine was replaced 3 times under a 3 yr. extended warranty. It died again after the warranty ran out so we went for a year with no ice because we were waiting on a new fridge to be delivered. It appears to be a similar issue to the one Samsung's experience and there is a class action suit about it. We now have a Subzero built-in and highly recommend it, but I doubt that's what you are looking for.

I love my Fridgidaire. Mine is side by side but very wide. I find it easier to organize than French door. Especially si ce the shelves are all level and there are 3 shelves and 2 pull out drawers in the main part of the freezer.
The ice and water dispenser does not take up a lot of space in the freezer either.
The previous fridge was a Samsung. Ours lasted 5 years.

We had a Fridgidaire that lasted about close to 20 years. We only replaced it because we had outgrown it as the kids grew older. We have had 2 LGs since then. I love the storage options! We have not experienced any issues with our ice machine (knock on wood!). I have heard about those issues with Samsung though. Stay away from Samsung. I know a few people who bought Samsung and had to replace it quickly. Our first LG was huge. I loved it so much. It had french doors with a separate door for drinks, a separate drawer that you could use as a freezer or additional fridge drawer (we used as fruit and cheese drawer) and a bottom freezer. It broke 4 years in and it was an expensive fix so we just bought a new one. The sales person said most fridges need to be replaced within 5 years now. What a shame! Our new fridge has french doors and a bottom freezer drawer. I really miss our previous fridge though.

I'm interested in this! I am wanting a french door fridge. My daughter has a Frigidaire and loves it. I really want white, and that is so hard to find. I hate stainless. Nothing in my kitchen is stainless. The GE Cafe matte white refrigerators are nice. We have a really low service rate on them (I would stay away from GE Profile or straight GE, though). Most mass market brand white fridges are designed for the lower end of the market. Basic design and features. The high end brands are moving into colors - including white, but nice - more than the mass market brands. But you’re looking at retail price of $8-20k or more in most cases for those brands. The Cafe line is one of the few mid-priced options that has white fridges with good features and design, but not crazy prices. You can see the options here www.cafeappliances.com/collections/customizable-professional/matte-white/?gad_source=1&gbraid=0AAAAADpHPF4uaupQuNvdS-GdsuM0-7nD7&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIhuTF9oOzhQMVA0VHAR3H1Aw-EAAYAiAAEgJU9PD_BwE

We have an 18 year old Fridgedair as our garage fridge and it’s still going strong.
It was in our kitchen for the first 16 years. The matching oven caught on fire. We replaced that with a Kitchenaid, and ended up replacing all the other appliances to match. No complaints. We needed/wanted counter depth, so our options were more limited.

Quick look from Consumers Report
Best French-Door Refrigerators 1 LRFXC2416S RECOMMENDED LG LRFXC2416S Price: $979.99Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all French-Door Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 83
The 36-inch-wide LG LRFXC2416S comes loaded with features: shelves that can be adjusted without moving the food on them, air and water filters, and a second icemaker (in addition to the dispenser in the door) that molds elegantly curved and oversized cubes for cocktails. This model is similar to the CR-tested (and now discontinued) LG LRFXC2406S, and we expect it to perform comparably. The tested model delivered excellent performance almost across the board in our lab tests. The one exception was energy efficiency, where its midlevel score landed in the bottom half of the pack. This fridge’s more expensive sibling, the LG LRFVC2406S, has a transparent door-in-door compartment. This model is also available in a black stainless steel version, the LG LRFXC2416D. LG French-doors received middle-of-the-road ratings for predicted reliability and owner satisfaction in our latest member survey.
2 LRFCS2503S RECOMMENDED LG LRFCS2503S Price: $2044.00 - $2799.99Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all French-Door Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 76
The 33-inch-wide LG LRFCS2503S performs very well in our tests, with stellar ratings for thermostat control and temperature uniformity, and strong ratings for energy efficiency, noise, and ease of use. This model’s array of features includes an icemaker, an air filter, and a built-in water filter. We expect that its less expensive sibling, the LG LRFCS25D3S, which is mechanically identical to this model, will perform similarly, though we haven’t tested it. In our latest member survey, LG French-doors received midrange predicted reliability and owner satisfaction ratings.

Best Side-by-Side Refrigerators QUICK TAKE 72
GSE23GGPWW RECOMMENDED GE GSE23GGPWW Price: $1619.99 - $2097.30Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all Side-By-Side Refrigerators Ratings The 33-inch GE GSE23GGPWW delivers strong performance in CR’s key cooling tests, garnering top-tier ratings for temperature uniformity and thermostat control. This side-by-side model is fairly easy to use and is equipped with an icemaker, a built-in water filter, an external water/ice dispenser, and digital controls. As a brand, GE side-by-side refrigerators received a favorable predicted reliability rating but a poor owner satisfaction rating in CR’s member surveys.

Best Top-Freezer Refrigerators 1 RT18M6215SG RECOMMENDED Samsung RT18M6215SG Price: $1149.00Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all Top-Freezer Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 84
At 29 inches wide, the Samsung RT18M6215SG is moderately sized for its category. It’s neither the widest nor the narrowest top-freezer that we’ve tested, but it is one of the best models in our ratings across the board. The unit earns excellent ratings for thermostat control, temperature uniformity, and noise output, making it the quietest refrigerator in its class. It also has a very good score for energy efficiency. Though it has only an adequate rating for ease of use, that’s still better than what most top-freezers earn, and this Samsung model provides storage for gallon-sized containers on the doors, and an icemaker. In surveys of our members, Samsung top-freezers garner a top-notch score for predicted reliability and a midrange rating for owner satisfaction.
2 RT16A6195SR RECOMMENDED Samsung RT16A6195SR Price: $695.00 - $849.00Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all Top-Freezer Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 79
The 28-inch Samsung RT16A6195SR turns in a solid, above-average performance among top-freezers, notching our highest possible scores for thermostat control, temperature uniformity, and energy efficiency, while earning a middling noise rating. (For ease of use, it gets a less-than-satisfactory rating, but that’s typical for top-freezers.) Features are scarce here, per the norm, but it does come with gallon storage on the door and spillproof shelves. This model has an optional icemaker. In our member surveys, Samsung top-freezers received an exemplary score for predicted reliability but just a midrange rating for owner satisfaction.
If you’re in need of a simpler or even smaller top-freezer, consult our list of the best top-freezer refrigerators from our tests.
Best Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators 1 LRDCS2603S RECOMMENDED LG LRDCS2603S Price: $1598.00 - $1795.00Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 85
The 33-inch-wide LG LRDCS2603S earns first-rate scores for controlling temperature and ensuring that it’s uniform throughout the unit, and a strong score for conserving energy. It earns near top-level ratings for noise, energy efficiency, and ease of use. Compared with many bottom-freezers, this LG is rich in features: It’s outfitted with an icemaker, a built-in water filter, and gallon-sized bins on the doors. This model’s Overall Score gets a boost because, in our latest surveys, CR members gave LG bottom-freezers a top rating for predicted reliability and a midlevel rating for owner satisfaction.
2 LBNC15231V RECOMMENDED LG LBNC15231V Price: $1295.00 - $1299.99Shop TEMPERATURE UNIFORMITY THERMOSTAT CONTROL EASE OF USE See all Bottom-Freezer Refrigerators Ratings OVERALL SCORE 79
The LG LBNC15231V is a slim 28 inches wide and is one of the best bottom-freezers in our ratings. Although it’s light on features, this model earns our highest rating for thermostat control and near top-level ratings on most other tests—except for a mediocre rating for ease of use. LG bottom-freezers make their owners fairly happy: In our most recent survey, members gave the brand’s bottom-freezer models a stellar rating for predicted reliability and a midlevel rating for owner satisfaction.

We had an appliance repair person over a couple of years ago for the oven, and Dh asked him about fridges. He said that he likes Whirlpool and he recommends avoiding Samsung and LG. (He said LG is decent for other stuff, but the fridges aren't as good.) We have a 20 year old fridge and I talk nicely to it every day in hopes that it won't give out lol.

Samsung & LG have the worst repair rates IME. I stopped carrying both brands because their service rate was so high. And they didn't tend to be minor, repairable issues, but total failure, which is an effin' nightmare for customers when the unit is under warranty. People can't just go without a functional fridge for a week until the manufacturer gets a servicer to them. I don't know how Consumer Reports evaluates reliability, but I have serious questions about their conclusions.

They don't make them like they used to. Most are made in the same factories in China. Even Bosch isn't as good as it used to be. We just had to replace our Bosch. The ice maker went out. $600 to replace it on a 5 yr. old fridge. Got rid of it and ended up with french door LG. Tried to get one as plain as possible. Only spent $1200 from a dent 'n scratch store. I will never pay what they are asking for refrigerators now a days. This one has a big dent in the freezer handle. I hang a nice little towel over it and no one can see it. Done!
Had same experience with good dishwasher. Broke after a few years. It was some fancy brand. No more! And the new one is just as quiet. Done! (You helped me get my aggressions out with that question.)
I would try and find a Best Buy seconds store if you can. They have very good deals. Go with all your dimensions.

Well, the repairman texted me back to tell me he is on pause regarding repairs due to a shoulder injury and doesn't have anyone else he would recommend. At 17 years old I guess it is time to just buy new, but they REALLY don't make them like they used to! I'm leaning towards Whirlpool and they also make Maytag and Kitchenaid. Off on a shopping trip tomorrow - thanks for all the info. I did get back into Consumer Reports just now too - thanks for that info you shared lurker and thanks everyone for all your input! Edited to add - DH was stuck on LG because he knew they made good TVs - lol. I'm going shopping on my own! LOL

We have been looking for a new fridge for close to 2 years now and still haven't found one we really like. I fear the current one will die and we'll be stuck buying one I'm going to dislike. We don't want stainless steel or a water dispenser/ice maker, which narrows our choices. Plus we want as shallow a fridge as possible. Today's "counter depth" fridges are sometimes still deeper than my current fridge. And when we do find a more shallow fridge, then it's just all around tiny. Basically I want a fridge that is narrow in comparison to the "standard" size fridges of today, shallower than the standard fridges of today, and tall, and apparently you need to fork over a bazillion dollars to a specialty appliance company for something like that. I just don't want my fridge to be the same height as me. I like it to be taller than me. There's been a fridge in this same spot in our kitchen since the 1950s, but suddenly it's become very hard to find a new fridge to fit the space well. Our current fridge is pushing 20 years old, so I fear it's days are limited.

Our Samsung French door isn't great. I'll go back to a side by side for my next one. I don't like bending over to dig through the freezer drawer, and it picks up animal hair like crazy - we screw open the back and clean it frequently.

LG tends to have the best ratings for most home appliances- washers, dryers, fridges, stoves, microwaves. We unfortunately had to replace all 4 kitchen appliances through the course of last year and boughr LG for all except the dishwasher (Bosch).
