The silver lining is that if they live close (ish) it's easier for you when they need help.
A few years ago when my in laws moved from their house to an apartment I begged them to move near us ( they were 1 hour away ) I literally begged. I searched apartments and sent them ads. Didn't work but I tried. Not because my in laws don't annoy me, they do, but because I had had enough of driving up and down the highway 2 hours each way, to care for my parents.

I can bake a file in a cake and bring it down to county lock up if necessary.

Lol...too cute. Honestly though, would give anything if I could move my MIL right next door. I wish she always lived right there. But I know if I had married my last bf I would have HATED that. My MIL and FIL live across the street from us and have for 14 years. The only problem I've ever had with them is my FIL making noise with his "lawn gadgets" before 8am or when I'm trying to nap (When it's warm he uses a leaf blower to blow dust and and little bits off of their blacktop driveway. Daily. Every day. VERY early. And let us not forget the edger he goes along the sidewalk with. I swear to you, this is the honest to God's truth...he occasionally gets out the old vacuum cleaner and SWEEPS his driveway.). I vent to DH about it, but I try to remind myself that they are wonderful in laws and I couldn't have asked for better neighbors. It just worked out for our kids that the neighbors are Grandma and Grandpa. As crazy as that vacuum story sounds, I promise you, he's not crazy and we all tease him endlessly about that! But he still does it!!

My inlaws moved 2 miles from us. Luckily we almost never see them unless it's the holidays. It's just far enough that they don't pop by but close enough that it's really easy to show up just in time for Thanksgiving etc. my sister had my parents move next door to them. I'm glad my bil was on board, my parents don't really go over unless invited and mostly my sister and her family go to my parents house. Actually think it's easier on my bil because for example he mows both lawns and stores the lawn mower in my parents' shed. If he lived 2 streets away he'd have to transport a mower over there.

Oh heeeeeeeeelllllllllllll no.
DH mentioned his parents are thinking of renting a place for a month or so in the winter someplace south. I verified "south" didn't mean in Nashville where we live because I need the break from family togetherness after thanksgiving & Christmas. It's just too much. I'm good til at least May.

Mine live 100 yards from my front door, and my mom probably 50 yards from me (and my crazy BIL has just bought the house next to MIL and FIL because he wants to be close to his parents (he is 47 and currently lives approx a mile away). I feel your pain.
