Saw a thread about how one person hates wrapping gifts. That made me remember how in the old days (I'll be 60 on monday) we would stand in line for ages and get gifts professionally wrapped. Birthday, new baby, anniversary, any gifts. There was the standard wrapping or you could pay a premium and get the "fancy" wrapping. Those days are over. What else do you remember that was out there but is now gone?

That's funny you should mention professional gift wrappers. I was at the mall yesterday <shudder> and there was a large table of wrappers. They had a big queue waiting and did such a nice job. Looked like they charged a donation to charity for the service.

Deliveries of all kinds. The pharmacy delivered, and not via mail order.. the actual local pharmacy sent someone out with your meds. The dairy on the edge of town delivered milk on the days you designated.
I grew up in a very small town. Keys were always left in the ignition of unlocked vehicles. Houses were left unlocked most of the time. Mom locked the doors at night when we went to sleep but if we all left the house during the day the doors would be left unlocked.

Licking the grocery store stamps for my granny and sticking them on the little papers that she turned them in on.

Gift wrapping would be such a great fundraiser for schools, charities, churches, etc. I would use that service!

My mom was a gift wrapper during the holiday season during high school. She still wraps the most beautiful and perfect packages.

Getting glassware or kitchen towels in the detergent. Getting a dish when buying a certain amount of gasoline. Every month or so would have a different dish (plate, bowl, saucer)

milk delivery. This was in the 80's. Now it's not even an option around here.

I remember drive thru dairies when I was little you could get basic groceries and didn't have to get out of the car it was great. The dairies closed and houses were built in their place. I don't think there are any dairies around here anymore oh I take that back I know of one but it is larger and no drive up services.

They have a great service; I call them a few days before a prescription runs out, they order it and collect it from my GP's surgery, then they call me and arrange a delivery time. I love them! There have been a couple of times where I haven't ordered a repeat prescription in time, and they advance me the meds.

The A&P with the coffee grinder. How I loved the smell of that aisle! I know there are stores that still do it, but I don't frequent them and to be honest, it's just not the same as when I was a kid.

I have been feeling nostalgic this year we have put up a bunch of older colored mini lights all over the house. We also added a few strings of bubble lights to the tree I am loving it. I am not a fan of the new led lights. If I had more time I would make a few of my grandmothers Christmas cookie recipes to.

My grandmother still has a pianola. We spent hours as kids playing through some of the rolls. This Christmas my teenage cousins are having an equally delightful time. Although I must say there's only so many times I can listen to Black and White Rag in 24 hours.
Having music play in the background is something I take for granted I think. Producing it used to be an activity that people focused on.

I miss the card in the back of the library book that had the due date stamp. I loved looking at the dates, seeing how old the book was, how often it was checked out, stuff like that.
We have gift wrappers at our mall as well, they do an awesome job, and all the money goes to charity. We also have a dairy that delivers milk and other dairy products.

When I was young I wanted to be a librarian so I could stamp the library books. In our school we got to *work* in the library a couple of times a year and I always volunteered to be the stamper. We have a drive-through dairy where you can buy milk and other stuff ~ the best part is the soft-serve ice cream cones they sell. The line is always long right after school gets out each day.

What a great memory! And an advantage of that system was that there was no barcode sticker covering part of the books' description.

What else do you remember that was out there but is now gone? LOL! One of my jobs working at a local department store was GIFT WRAPPING. Both my mother and I wrapped gifts in higher end stores as teens. Last couple years I have done a couple "part-time" jobs at stores doing the "fancy" gift wrapping. Not many people request it any more. Restaurants in department stores, with special meals and events at Christmas. And the BIG multi-floored, and many times multiple buildings downtown department stores with huge Christmas trees, and an entire floor for toyland and Santa Claus. The line to see Santa had so many things that you almost wanted to have a wait so you could see all the wonderful stuff. And real Gas Station Attendants that did more than just pump gas. These were not cashiers either.

Waiting for things like the Sears Catalog Wish Book before the holidays. No instant view like we have today, you had to wait for it to arrive. Or waiting for people to arrive for a visit either from around the corner or out of town. Now we know every breath and motion due to cell phones and social media. The anticipation of many things has disappeared.

I was that wrapper in the mall. I have brought those wicked wrapping skills into my own house. I love a gorgeous present. I vaguely remember that someone pumped our gas for us. I would love that service. Whenever we are on the east coast, they still do that.
