The first 2 I saw were single people. The one tonight was a family of 6. They were moving from LA to upstate NY for more family time. They wanted a 600 square foot house,100 square foot per family member. The house they bought had 1 bedroom and 1 bath. The older kids (teenage girls) said things were going to be chaotic. There were also twins, still in diapers. Just seems like asking a lot of their kids to put them through all that. Maybe cause I am person who needs space and alone time. Or is this just the pussification of American kids?

the house in California was 2500 square feet. Wouldn't you love to see a follow up story on them, @monicab

I saw that episode the other night and I thought they were not really thinking things through. Dh and would also be interested in an update several months post-move.

I haven't seen the show, but my friend Brandon, his SO and their 5YO daughter just built a tiny home. Here's their FB page: www.facebook.com/BrandonAndSamsTinyAbode/After all the purging I've been trying to do this week, I'm appreciating the concept even more.

Yeah, especially since their follow up at the end was before they really got moved in..in fact they were skyping with the daughters to show them the bathroom and the girls looked horrified.
Personally, I would love to see a follow up on this couple. That house was small! I'm not sure why they didn't go even up to 1000 or 1200 at least to make it more manageable!!

My sister was just telling me about this episode. She was so annoyed at the mom's belief that this tiny house could bring about more family togetherness.

I love the idea of downsizing, and I love the trend og tiny homes. But 6 people and one bedroom sounds like a terrible idea. They could have gotten a (tiny) home that had just a bit more space.

I grew up with seven people in a 600 sq ft house. Two bedrooms one bath. Way too small. We were never alone. I spent a lot of time avoiding being in that house. Outside. Friends. Anywhere but there.

I have never heard of this show! I must watch it! What network?
6 people with only 1 bedroom? That's nuts. That's gotta be just for ratings! Who would wanna live like that?
I would love a tiny house! I have a Pinterest board dedicated to just that! But there's only me and a cat. I can live with it. Five other people? Nope, no way! I remember when I was a young bride many years ago. I really wanted a big house. Plenty of bedrooms for all five of us, extra rooms for play rooms and sewing room. Big huge kitchen, big huge bathrooms. Living all the years as wife, mother and housekeeper? That nipped that dream in the bud big time! LOL!

I was thinking many of these same things as I watched this episode. As much as I like the idea of down sizing, I just can't see how a family of 6 can stay sane in such close quarters. There is such a thing as TOO much togetherness.

I watched it. It fascinates me a bit, and I can appreciate the simplicity of if, but I think that family is crazy. They lost me when the dad seriously was interested in the cabin with no bathroom and called that an 'adventure.' Yea, maybe for 2 days. What happens when your twins are potty training and need to go at 4am? You climb down from the loft that all 6 of you sleep in and go outside? Stop...Hopefully that was just for show.
I'd like an update after the renovations. I think 600 sq ft is completely unrealistic for a family of 6. Unless, of course, they had no other choice. But they did. Closet space (there was 1 and it was smaller than a coat closet), no place to sit and eat as a family (as they turn the dining room into a kitchen, and lack of room to cook would make it a deal breaker for me.

I could see a tiny house for a weekend cottage, but not for real life.
The family in 600 feet? That is not going to end well, not after living in a normal sized home.

I think they are crazy. I completely understand wanting a smaller house and no mortgage, but that is crazy. Add on top of that they are moving from LA to an area that has very little to do comparatively (I lived about 1 hour south of where they moved) and I think it is a recipe for disaster for them. The teenagers are going to be bored and want out very quickly I have a feeling. I would love to see an update also since the kids hadn't even seen the house yet.

And that bathroom!! They had to go sideways around the sink to get to the toilet. 6 people!? Just...no.
I hope the husband was planning a massive 'shed' in the backyard.

I actually know that family. They are not crazy, it just works for their situation at this time. They moved cross country to be with family and for personal reasons. They will be remodeling it and adding lots more space. I couldn't do it. But they are just a normal family like you and me making best of a situation

I don't think kids need 1000 sq ft to themselves, but they went to a ridiculous extreme. I hope it works for them. My hope is to downsize one day to a single story, one big great room (eat in kitchen family room combination, with a small guest bathroom), a master suite and one office/guest room (I work from home). No idea how many sq feet that would be. I want it small so I can keep up with the cleaning better. I tease my husband that we should buy 2 of the 800sq feet tiny houses with a front porch on each, set them up, side by side so we each have our own. And this would be done on a 10 acre farmette with a monster barn for my horses and hay storage and an equally monster garage space for my husband to do whatever husbands do in such places.

But they are just a normal family like you and me making best of a situation If they are adding a bunch of space then I can see how it could work. I didn't think they were crazy - she seemed normal, he seemed a little more up for adventure - I just think 'adventure' will get old quick. I was glad they didn't go after the no bathroom cabin, although 25 acres of land was nice. I knew they were moving towards family, and assumed there was some sort of situation that meant they wouldn't even consider a small mortgage - none of my business. I just didn't think that was usable space for 6 people as it was. I hope there is a follow-up.

You do realize that these shows are staged. I know of someone that was on House Hungers and they didn't even buy any of the 3 house shown. I bet they didn't really choose that house and picked a bigger one.

I bet they didn't really choose that house and picked a bigger one. They did show the family after they purchased the 600 sq foot house. The last bit of footage they showed was the mom and dad starting to demo certain things and they were bringing in a contractor to help with one of the rooms.

As crazy as it may be for them, I respect their decision to be mortgage free and live with less. I just love the idea of living with less junk. After our Christmas gift opening, I looked at all of the new stuff laying around...ugh. Too much! Our home isn't large by any means (small ranch) and I wouldn't want a home much larger.

I had a tiny house(although not that tiny) 1100 square foot for 5 people and one on the way. I don't get the appeal...
There is only so much purging that can be done, we needed dishes and towels... I have hobbies and I need to be able to get away from the kids once in a while.
We are now a family of 6 in 1800 square feet and are much happier with space to spread out!

I just watched this episode last night!! I'm sorry, but if the only way to bring your family closer is for mom and dad to share a bedroom with their 4 children who have pretty significant age ranges then it is time to examine your family structure and why there is so much distance between all of you.
While I don't think families should outright ignore each other, there is absolutely nothing wrong with each member being able to have their own space. Not to mention, as husband and wife, wouldn't you want your own privacy? Sorry kids, go outside so mom and dad can fool around. Come on.
I know this tiny house thing is the new fad that is gaining traction, but I think it's selfish of those parents to force that on their children to that extreme. I see these tiny houses working for singles or couples without children. Oh but wait supposedly they are adding space? So they didn't really actually want a tiny tiny house. They wanted attention.
I don't know why this struck such a nerve with me last night as I watched, but I was totally annoyed with these people!!
ETA: I love the idea of simplifying and I actually try to go through and purge stuff in our house weekly. There is a difference between that and having a closet space so tiny for 6 people to share that each person gets what?? One set of shirt, pants, underwear??

They did not do this for attention. They were contacted by HGTV, they did not contact them. I love the presumptions.

I know I couldn't like in that small of a space with our family of 4.
