Ok ok..like I said...I asked because I couldn't believe it myself. If I were single..yea maybe. Lol But...I did go to express care and they said small hairline fracture. Pretty right?

The Minute Clinic is only $79 with no insurance. That's probably cheaper than your ER copay. My local Minute Clinic doesn't do x-rays, does yours?

I <3 your sarcasm. Exactly where my mind went - "seems like a nice pick up line, but other than that....." But I'm walking distance from the fire station. Perhaps I should test this theory. Me too!! But I am probably a bit too old for those guys. Too old, too fluffy and too much like someone's mother.

Yes, I would get the ring off asap. does it need a splint?

They made me take it off at the clinic so they could do xray. Yes a splint and/or wrapped.

uh, no. A fireman is just going to tell you to go to the dr. Yep. My dad, a retired fireman, would tell me to go to urgent care.

Don't go to the ER or urgent care. Splint it until you can see a hand surgeon. They have the best X-ray equipment and can read them for fine details. I broke my thumb last summer- went to urgent care - got splinted and was told the next day that it was not broken. Several painful weeks later I went to a hand doc - he said it was broken and was almost healed. just my 2 cents.

I'm an ER nurse and happen to be in love with a firefighter who is also a paramedic. We both agree that neither the ER nor the fire department is a good place to visit for a broken finger. Of course, if the finger is going <---that way and your hand is otherwise going ------> that way, there is nothing that can be done in the ER that is an actual emergency.
I would just tell you to buddy tape it, take some advil and move on. Nothing you can really do for a minor broken finger.
hope you feel better! meredith

What weird advise! My birthday was a few weeks ago, and there was a knock on my door. I wasn't expecting anyone, and standing there were 5 young, strapping firefighters. I thought "WOW, this is the best birthday ever" and then one of them said, "you called us"?. I just stood there shaking my head no, and one of the yelled "we got the wrong house, it's next door!", and off they ran away. Turned out the neighbor had a faulty carbon dioxide alarm.
Happy Birthday to me anyways!

Ouch. Looks badly bruised, but at first glance not swollen or deformed enough to be broken. HOWEVER, I would get it seen by a doctor to be on the safe side, and get the ring off in case it swells more and the ring has to be cut off.
The business about the fireman makes as much sense as ringing your GP when your house is on fire.

I have nothing about the finger or the firefighters, I just wanted to say THANK YOU FOR HOW YOU UPDATED!!! Writing "post #32" instead of "update at bottom" or "update page 3" made me actually open this thread to see the update.
To explain more (which I know should not be needed) "update at bottom" is only the bottom until one other person posts. By the time other people read there could be four more pages. And "update page 3" isn't the same everywhere. Page 3 on a computer isn't necessarily page 3 on Safari on a phone or through either one of the apps.
You, my friend, have won the internet today for your gracious way of updating! I'm WAY too excited about that. :-)

I took a 7yo skinned knee to the fire station to get doctored on Christmas Day. There was a miracle recovery when Daddy offered to let her climb the ladder on his truck. I'm not sure why so many people think that it makes no sense to go to the fire department for a medical check. I'd have thought that despite the name, most people realize that anymore FD = EMS department that occasionally runs fires, but maybe that's not common knowledge? I asked DH (FF/P) what he'd do, and he said splint it, offer his opinion, and tell you you'd need to get an x-ray to be sure. In his department (18 stations) they will do basic checks for people if needed - something like your finger, BP or glucose check, etc. No, they can't provide definitive care, but for minor issues, they can certainly handle them or at least suggest a next step. They ARE the same people who show up when you need an ambulance, after all, so they know a bit about medical treatment.

I don't think my hometown firefighters/EMTs would blink an eye at someone stopping by to get an opinion on a finger. I imagine they also would splint it and tell you to get x-rayed for sure. But then, I grew up in small town Alabama. Where I now live in St. Louis I don't know if it would work the same.

No one said paramedics are stupid or that it wasn't a viable option...just not the right option for this situation. I think we all "realize" and agree that its' "common knowledge" that firefighters and EMTs go hand in hand, if they are not the same person.

*I* sometimes ask a firefighter his medial opinion on injuries, but in my case the FF is a family member who lives nearby.

I still had a mile to go to get home with blood dripping from skinned knees and palms. I realized a few steps in that my left wrist was in really bad shape, and I wrenched my rings off as I walked home. The ER doc was very happy she didn't have to cut them off before sending me over to X-ray for my broken wrist. Those 8 weeks were the longest I've gone without wearing my wedding and engagement rings. I wish I had thought of going to the local Firehouse first - the view would have improved my state of mind!

In many countries, Fire and EMS are separate services... Fire may attend some medical calls - they have basic first aid training, but are not trained or covered to provide more care than that... In most of Canada for example, paramedics work for EMS which is separate from Fire services... I know of only two municipalities that have recently amalgamated services, and in both cases firefighters do not provide anything about basic first aid - there is simply a paramedic (from EMS) who rides on the fire truck... If you came to a fire station with a medical question beyond basic first aid, they'd have to call a medic for you or tell you to see your pharmacist, doctor, UC, ER, etc...
