**update post #32** I slammed it hard Saturday. It still really hurts, black and blue and a little swollen. Have a soft splint on it. Girl at work said if I didn't want to waste time with Dr visit to stop by the fire department and they can look at it. What?! Ever done/heard of this?

Firemen have x-ray vision?
Myself I would go to er and have an x-ray and then have them deal with what to do about the situation.

uh, no. A fireman is just going to tell you to go to the dr.

Firefighters are trained in first aid and are first responders, but no, you dont drop by a station to have your finger checked out.
It also isn't worthy of an er visit. Go to the doctor or urgent care. They may or may not need an x-ray.

My firefighter (not fireman) DH would poliety tell you there's nothing he can do and you need to see a doctor.

Are there minute-clinic-type places around you? You could go there. Or does your clinic/insurance have a nurse line? I've called the nurse line and gotten great advice--and if you need to see a doctor, they can usually work you in.

Unfortunately my insurance doesn't cover urgent care for those quickstop places it's either the office or ER

My (now retired) FF husband would tell you go to the ER or Urgent Care.

I learned the expensive way to go straight to the orthopedic doctor for xrays. At least mine has better equipment than the regular doctor's office or the ER, and they will redo any xrays when you get there. They are also processed and read immediately, as opposed to the ER down the street.

I'm married to a FF. They are certified first responders but yeah, he'd tell you to go to the doctor.

That thread title made me laugh out loud (or, go "HAHA" which I'm told is the less old-fogey way to express amusement these days.) Maybe on the way home from the firehouse, you could stop by your doctor's office and ask him how to cook your turkey for New Year's Day.

I admit...it's funny. Which is why I questioned it..like an old wives tale. No way was I going to go there. ..lol But with my ins if I want to see my ortho I have to see primary 1st then get a referral. If I see primary I'll be there forever then be sent for x-rays. With the ER at least I'll know relatively quick...urgent care isn't covered by my ins.

How much is the co-pay for the er? I ask because maybe self pay at an urgent care would be xheaper. Does you Dr office have extended hours? Ours has a p.a. there that I can see if my pcp isnt.

The Minute Clinic is only $79 with no insurance. That's probably cheaper than your ER copay.
I would go there and find out if I needed to do anything else.

No ER copay i did just find an express care place who takes my ins so I'm going there. wow, that is awesome! My co-pay for er is $150, urgent care (which is worthless) is $70-80, so if possible I hit the doctor or the er.

On the way home, zip by the firehouse and see how they like your diagnosis.

I think some will do pap smears for a $20 co pay.

I think some will do pap smears for a $20 co pay. This made me spit water all over myself and my screen. I bet there are some who would do it for free!

My BIL is a firefighter and I know he would get a kick out of this thread! But I wouldn't want to give away my Internet "home" to relatives.

I think some will do pap smears for a $20 co pay. They will also toss in a breast exam if you ask nicely enough...

I <3 your sarcasm. Exactly where my mind went - "seems like a nice pick up line, but other than that....." But I'm walking distance from the fire station. Perhaps I should test this theory.

My DH is an orthopaedic surgeon and he would tell you that since he does't have X-ray vision, he can't tell if it's broken just by looking at it (although from your description it's certainly a strong possibility).
