DH and I are sitting around today while I nurse a cold. We're looking for something good to watch on TV, either a mini-series or series. I'm in the mood for something British. We have Amazon Prime. Any suggestions? For inspiration, here are some of my faves: Sherlock, Whitechapel, Downton Abbey, Breathless, Call the Midwife and The Bletchly Circle. What are your favorites?

We just watched "Parade's End" on Amazon and loved it. We also enjoy Poirot.

Thanks for all the suggestions so far! Some I have seen (North & South, Lark Rise to Candleford) and some DH has already seen (Dr. Who). I think Parade's End looks good (and has the added bonus of starring Benedict Cumberbatch), but when I read the description to DH, he nixed it; I'll save it for another day. We've at least established that we can agree on either a mystery or legal drama. Neither of us is in the mood for a comedy (although I've written down many of your suggested comedies for future reference; and may I suggest "Vicious" for those of you looking for a laugh?) We are considering "Place of Execution." Anyone have a review? We've agreed to press "play" on SOMETHING by 6:00 pm est, when our Chinese food will be arriving. This is threatening to become our most-debated decision of 2014, lol.

Just started Happy Valley, which looks like it has potential.
Good Neighbors is an oldie but goodie.
Waiting for God is amusing.
I like the inspector Lynley mysteries, based on the novels by Elizabeth George.

Broadchurch is excellent. Judge John Deed has several series and is very good if you can find it. The Fall has just finished its second series and was creepy and very very good.Morse, the UK version of Law and Order, waking the dead, silent witness. I could name hundreds, lol !
ETA- I agree that happy Valley is well worth watching.
an older one that is also worth watching although not crime based, is Cold Feet. Several series, follows the lives of several couples and is a good mix of black comedy and the crap that most people have to live through!

'The missing ' was good, but I think they stretched it out over too many episodes.
ETA I clearly watch far too much TV!

I second the Sherlock Holmes series with Jeremy Brett. In my opinion, he optimizes Holmes. A series the DH and I have on our dvr list is Orphan Black. If you can, don't read the description, just watch the first one. The surprises are fantastic! It's a cross between science fiction and mystery.
