Within a few minutes between your phones and it is 10.30pm
We are currently on holidays and house-sitting for my step-son and DIL. It has been a lovely break as the house is right near the beach and we have been relaxing while they are happy to have the house looked after.
We had just gotten home from a gathering at one of my sisters places and and went outside for a few minutes. I plugged my phone in and saw I had missed 2 calls from our daughter-in-law in that time and then DH checked his and he had missed 2 as well within a space of a few minutes.
DIL was calling to say that SIL had been in a barbecue accident where they are holidaying and was being choppered back to Adelaide from the local hospital. He has bad burns to his face, chest and arms but apparently his airway is ok, thank goodness. Nothing we can do tonight as he won't even be in a ward until very late.
DIL was heading back to where they were staying because their 6 year old DD was pretty distraught and so she will go back and stay tonight and then pack up and both come back in the morning. We will look after little granddaughter while DIL goes to the hospital and then we'll see what happens. We were going back home really early Saturday morning but I think that might change now.
Not a good start to the new year. Any prayers and positive thoughts gladly accepted.
UPDATE: I've had a couple of phone calls from DIL this morning. She is nearly home and has spoken to SIL who is just about to head into surgery. It seems like he may be very lucky - no skin grafts required at this stage, just going in for cleaning up etc. They think he may be home within a week. DIL will go up at lunchtime when he gets out of surgery and then will take the little one back later on if all has gone ok. She saw it happen so needs to see him they think. He said he is looking ok and wants to see her.
Thanks for your thoughts, will update again when I know anything more.
UPDATE 2: We have just been to visit. Quite confronting going in - have to all wash and gown up with hats etc. He is quite good considering how it happened. He has one side of his face very puffy, one large bandaged area on his chest and his right arm is dressed up to the elbow. They are hoping that if he doesn't have any complications like infection that he will be out of hospital on Wednesday and be pretty good in 3 weeks.
Now, this is a lesson to all our blokes - because as much as we tell them not to do these things many still do!! They had a fire drum and were adding a bit of petrol to get it started. He had poured it in a small cup and as he was going to add it, a gust of wind blew it back at him, it ignited and in shock he threw the cup backwards which made the petrol hit his face and chest. Thankfully he closed his mouth as airway burns can be life threatening. Unfortunately, 6 kids including DGD witnessed it but they are an amazing group of people they were away with and they handled it all really well. A told us today that she saw Daddy's head on fire She did go to see him and although she was a bit scared he was ribbing her as he usually does so she saw that he was still her crazy Dad just with some bandages on.
They had a wedding tomorrow which C really didn't want to go to. It is outside and going to be 43 degrees (celcius) so he said "I told you I didn't want to go" so it was nice to see him in good humour.
We have decided to still stick with our plans to go home tomorrow. DH will come back on the weekend if he needs to and we already had plans to be back in 2 weeks.
I think I will sleep better tonight, I couldn't sleep last night worrying as at that stage he was being flown here by chopper and we had no idea of how bad he was.
Thanks for all your thoughts and prayers. We haven't posted anything on FB etc so it is good to have an anon place to get it all out x
