When I come home the first thing I do is wash my hands in my kitchen sink. I was reading one of Joel Osteen's books and he said one of the things his wife always nags him on is him washing his hands in the kitchen sink when he gets home, she prefers that he go to the bathroom to do that. last night I went to a friend of a friend's apt for dinner. When the food was ready she told us to go wash our hands and pointed to her bathroom even though we were all sitting at her kitchen island that had a sink on it. I'm a germ freak myself so I respect other germ freaks, but I don't understand this aversion to using the kitchen sink to wash your hands?

Only if the sink is empty. It drives me crazy if my kids or dh try and wash their hands in the sink if there are dishes in it (even though the dishes are already dirty). But if the sink is empty (as it would normally be when I get home), yes, I wash my hands in it. I always wash my hands in the kitchen sink before I start making dinner which is usually the second I walk in the door.

I wash my hands at our kitchen sink, but not over the basin that dishes are washed in (I lift it out the way, or rinse my hands over the half sink. My reasoning is that I am washing muck and germs off my hands, so I don't want them to then come in contact with the bowl I clean dishes in. I certainly wouldn't want hands that are needing washed after going to the loo anywhere near my kitchen sink.

I routinely wash my hands in the kitchen sink. Not only when I just need to wash up, but throughout the cooking process. For example, I am not going to trek to the bathroom to wash my hands after handling raw chicken.
(and for the record, I also have been known to brush my teeth in the kitchen sink too.)

I wonder if she goes to the bathroom to wash her hands before/while preparing food? Because when I'm making a meal I wash/rinse my hands often between different ingredients, handling chicken etc etc.

That bugs me too. I hate when my kids or DH wash their hands in the kitchen sink mainly bec I just imagine all the germs they are washing off going all over the dishes (dirty) that are in the sink too. It's not really rational now that I say it, but it is what it is. The other thing that bothers me about it is after they wash their hands they dry them either on my kitchen towel (which is for countertop use not hands) or use paper towels and that's wasteful to me bec that's what the towel in the bathroom is for! We have a 1/2 bath right beside the kitchen so it's no trouble to go there instead.
And I'm not a germaphobe! This is apparently one of those weird things though. I guess we all have a few.
ETA: I wash my hands in the kitchen sink all the time. I'm aware of if the gunk I"m washing off is going all over dishes or not but the kids and DH never even think about it.

I am not going upstairs to the bathroom to wash my hands, no. I didn't think people were against it. I have always washed my hands in the kitchen sink.
I predict this is going to be another pea/blow your nose/menstruate in the shower thing.

But doesn't everything get washed down the drain? You can always do a quick rinse of the sink before putting dirty dishes in it, but I figure I'm about to soap up the dishes so I don't mind washing my hands over dirty dishes either.

I cook a lot so I wash my hands in the kitchen a million times while cooking. I use the master bathroom sink for all other hand washing. My guest bathroom is just off the hallway leading to the kitchen and I expect guests to wash their hands there. I really don't like it when they use the kitchen sink unless they are cooking.

I also wash my hands at the kitchen sink all the time when preparing a meal, and dry them on a kitchen hand towel especially for the purpose of drying clean wet hands in the kitchen!

and yes, I wash my hands in the kitchen sink all the time. So does everyone else. I am totally not a germaphobe though.

I wash my hands at the kitchen sink when I am preparing food to prevent cross contamination.
I wash my hands in the bathroom if I am out and about, working outside etc.
I wash the kitchen sink with hot soapy water, rinse it and spray a bleach & water solution to sanitize it and re-rinse. I toss sponges frequently and use a fresh dish towel daily
I am not sure I would have made that requests of my guests but I would have cleaned/sanitized the kitchen sink before continuing any food prep.

I have so many questions.
What is the difference between washing your hands in the kitchen sink or the bathroom sink? If your hands are clean and dried on a towel, won't the towel be clean (or clean enough anyway)? Why is Joel Osteen's wife a total nag? Why aren't we all just dousing ourselves with bleach and burning off the top layer of skin to avoid spreading any kind of microbial agent?

Shit, I've been menstruating ALL OVER the place. At home, at work, at the gym... OMG, how embarrassing. Do you think people know I've menstruated in front of them? I should probably apologize. Maybe I will make that my New Year's Resolution.

Almost certainly, you are right, and I would start any new bowl of washing up by giving it a quick rinse while I'm running the tap to get the hot water running through anyway. I'm sure it is a very small contamination risk if any. It is just what I do. I think washing my hands after preparing raw meat is different though. I am very careful not to contaminate (or think I am contaminating!) the sink area with splashes of raw chicken juice.

I wash my hands in the kitchen sink as soon as I walk in the door. I spent a year in a modified quarantine and this is now ingrained in me. I have a double sink, but even if there were dishes in there, I wash them in the dishwasher. So I don't care if I get the germs of the unwashed masses on my dirty dishes.
When I hand wash dishes, I scrub out the sink. Every time. I wash my hands frequently just with meal prep and I don't want raw meat germs on the clean dishes. I also cover any clean dishes with a clean dish towel if I don't hand dry them. Otherwise, the kids would mix in their dirty dishes.
I have two towels out in the kitchen at all times. A hand towel for drying hands and scraping prep crumbs off the counter, and then a dish towel that is like the old flour sack material that is for drying dishes and that I consider mostly sanitary. After handling raw meat or while cleaning up after dinner, I spray down the counters with Lysol Kitchen Spray and dry them with a paper towel. Because I consider that all to be germy!

I hope there were not children around when you've been doing that. Is "Wow, just wow" appropriate here?

I came in here just to see how many are adverse to washing their hands at the kitchen sink. I predict a multi-pager! LOL!
BTW...I use whatever sink is closest and I don't care if there are dishes in there or not because most likely they are dirty. And the soap from washing my hands isn't going to hurt!
