Yes, I've Googled. I would like pea input. Deal. ;-p
We are thinking Maui. Six adults and three kids (7 and 5). Probably in June.
We know Hawaii is not cheap, but we have to keep somewhat of a budget. (No we don't need super cheap)
We are open to resorts, condos or home rentals. We'd prefer beach access but we can be open to other options.
Has anyone had any positive experiences with a bigger group in Maui? Open to any suggestions. Just trying to get my bearings.

Were staying at Honua Kai in June. I did tons of research and liked this property the best. We're getting two rooms next door to each other (through VRBO) for our party of 7. Full kitchen, den with bed, living room with bed and a regular bedroom with a king in each. Prices were very reasonable. There are 4 pools, one with water slides for the kids. Duke's Restaurant is on site.

we stay at the Makena hotel. it's reasonable, and the beach is a short walk. you can see the ocean from the room windows. You might like to get a condo somewhere though. it's so much easier to cook some meals (breakfasts) and not have to go out so much to eat. kids are happy almost anywhere. they will be in Paradise! Maui is not my favorite island, but I see why some like it.
it's pretty touristy and congested. We much prefer the Big Island or Kauai

I would say half of our friends stay at honua Kai every time they go to Maui.
We prefer the other side of the Island - Wailea. It is a bit fancier but the resorts are that much more expensive. We always rent a condo through Vrbo. The last time we went we stayed at The Palms. You could walk to the beach but it wasn't beach access. We were 6 people and rented a three bedroom / three bathroom condo. The ocean isn't great for kids to swim in. If the kids love to swim and play in the water I'd plan to spend a lot of time at the pool. The last time we went our kids were 7 and 4 and we travelled with two life jackets so the kids could play In the waves without fear. There were many times that the kids were pulled under while wearing their life jackets and just playing in the waves. On Maui, having a great lanai for BBQing is key, and planning a stop to costco after you land is also key.
My parents just returned from Maui and stayed at the Wailea Ekahi. They have stayed here before and really liked it. They get ocean front and walk to the beach easily. If you want easier beach access, look in Kihea where prices are a bit lower. If you can swing the cost, look In to the grand wailea or the fairmont Kia Lani and you won't be disappointed. But if you want to save on cost go with a condo on vrbo. If you can afford honua Kai i'd try that too.

We have gone to a wonderful place called Napili Kai for family reunions. The rooms have kitchens and there are grills on the property so we do a lot of our meals there. It's right on the beach! It's very nice - not a five star resort or high rise - many of the rooms are just a few steps from the beach but it is absolutely lovely and my favorite place to be. It's about 15 minutes beyond Lahaina.

I'd look through VRBO for that large a party. DH and I went about 4 years ago and stayed at the Westin Ka'annapali (sp?). I loved that side of the island. We went to LaHaina when we wanted to eat out mostly. We did a whale watching boat tour out of there. But that will depend on what time of the year you go. However, we also spotted a lot just from the lookouts and the beach.
If you stay on that side of the island and have a car, go north up on the coastal drive. Our concierge gave us a map of places to stop including the blowhole. I liked that drive better than Hana personally.
The one thing I now regret not doing was offshore snorkeling. At the time neither of us had ever snorkeled and the snorkeling off the beach (while well renowned usually) was horrendous due to heavy waves from the aftermath of the tsunami. We could hardly even walk in less than 1 foot of water. We were taught to snorkel at Atlantis a few years later and now will always book a snorkeling adventure anytime we are near good snorkeling!

we stayed at a place called Bamboo Valley Inn in Haiku... it's a private inn with two or three small suites, all with small kitchens and bedrooms. Ours was two bedrooms, a LR with a fireplace, and a private patio. They may have a larger one that would hold that many people. We got it for a Groupon price of about $700 for about 5 nights. It wasn't right on the coast or anything, but an easy drive to Lahaina, up the volcano, etc. and they had coolers, chairs, etc. we could use. Maybe check into something smaller, like that?? (Maui was beautiful, and I can't wait to go back!!)
edit: I hadn't ever snorkeled before, and there's a beach right to the north of Lahaina called 'baby beach' where it was really calm, and the reefs come right up to the shoreline. There's a shopping mall about a block away with a dive shop (Boss Frog's) where we rented our gear for pretty cheap.
eta again: depends on what you want to do-- since we stayed in the interior, we went ziplining partway up the volcano, and there's also horseback riding, bicycle riding down the volcano, etc.

We went to Kauai last June with 9 people. We stayed in a timeshare and rented two units. It was great because we had a kitchen to prepare meals. We had a master bedroom and then another bedroom with two beds plus a pull out couch. We didn't care much about the rooms because we were barely in them at all, just for sleeping really.
The other room my sister and her bf used along with me and my nephew. Same design and only about a unit apart. We stayed where there was a pool and hot tub.
Most of the time we explored the island and were out and about. We lived in our swim suits. I got a top snd bottom from lands ends that dries quickly which was great! I hardly wore any makeup, my hair was always in a ponytail, it was great!
In the mornings we typically went to the beach for a few hours then back to the room for lunch ( sandwiches, chips, fruit) and then back out again. We ate simple dinners like pasta, fish ( there was a grill outside) and we ate one neka out a day.
It was a great vacation and we all want to go again!!!

How about the Marriott Beach Club on Kaanapali.? They are timeshares. We are not time share owners but love the marriott properties so we will sometimes go thru Redweek.com to get access to a rental. I'm not sure if there are 3 bedrooms, but it's worth taking a look. It's a great central location, great beach, many excellent restaurants nearby and there are bar-bques to grill plus a full kitchen. We were in a 2 bedroom 2 1/2 bath which may be tight for 9, but check if there is a 3 bedroom or maybe 2 smaller units.

Napili Point is another possibility. I've stayed in the condos there twice, and we hung out at Kaanapali most days.

Went to Maui in 2012 with a group of 6 adults and 1.5 kids (7 month pregnant SIL), and we rented a condo in Ka'anapali Beach (Aston Papakea resort). Ended up paying $1500 for a one week stay in a 2 bedroom plus loft bedroom unit with two full bathrooms. We are all trying to get the rest of the family on board with doing this again (this trip was with my brother and his pregnant wife and 3 year old daughter; my mother, my SIL's mother and my husband and I). Look at www.homeaway.com and www.vrbo.com . I have had tons of success finding properties to rent for vacations for both big and small groups. For several years, I booked houses on the Oregon or Washington coast for my family to vacation in--as many as 10 adults and 6 kids. This is definitely the best way to go, economically speaking. Make a few meals at home (at least breakfast), and have so much more space than a teeny hotel room.
