My DD plans to get her BFA. She's still kind of amazed that we support that.

My son is undecided, and it's killing him that he can't pinpoint his major.

My son is undecided, and it's killing him that he can't pinpoint his major. Tell him not to worry! They are exposed to so much Freshman year; he'll figure it out eventually. Even my students who come in "knowing exactly what they want to do", often change dramatically when they start taking classes.

My nephew... can't help bragging a bit as I am really proud of him. Just got into the University of Chicago with a double major of Physics and Music Composition. ( He is still waiting to hear from his first choice Oberlin where he was deffered.)
My daughter is in 6th grade and wants to major in vocal performance, she already has a short list of colleges, she wants to go to the North Carolina School for the Arts for high school.

DD (26) graduated with her BA in philosophy/theology. She knew, after working in the university library as an undergrad, that she wanted to work in an academic library (not public) ... and then decided a divinity/seminary library. She moved into her supervisor's job upon graduation (supervisor had finished her MLIS [Master of Library & Information Science] & moved on to another university's library), and began her MLIS degree which she finished this past June. She is now starting her second Master's degree in Theological Studies. She has been employed in academia since 2010, and is currently working at the Divinity Library at Vanderbilt University (Nashville). She's been there since April of 2013. She saw the job opening/posting online, interviewed via Skype, they hired her, and BAM within 3 weeks, she was outta here! DD (22) will graduate with his BS in Civil Engineering (Structures) in June. He interned and is already employed by a large-build CE firm. He's not "working" for them until July, but he does local career fairs for them about once a month. I typed all of that out just cuz I don't want parents to be discouraged. SO many "kids" are saying that there aren't any jobs.... Both of mine are/were employed the moment they graduate(d) - IN THEIR FIELD OF STUDY - so it is possible! I've been so happy for them that they didn't have to work at Footlocker or Denny's or someplace while they TRIED to find a job that they will love! Chele :-)

My daughter is a senior and wants to be a nurse. Her high school offers a CNA class and she recently completed it. I'm so glad she had that experience because she finished it feeling even stronger about becoming a nurse. She'll be a great one. I'm excited about where she is in life right now.

DS just graduated December 18th with a BS in Electronic Media and Film with a concentration in Film/Video/Digital Media. He knew he wanted to work in Film since he was 4 years old and went to see "Jurassic Park" at the theatre with his grandfather. Yes, I know-I was a terrible mother letting my 4 year old see that film at that age. But he wasn't scared at all, he was fascinated. He knew at that moment that was what he wanted to do with this life. And he had his grandfather right beside in case he got scared.
I'm glad he pursued his dreams and never gave up. But again, I've drilled that message in his head his entire life. You can be whatever you want to be if you are willing to work for it and never give up.
Debbie in MD.
