I do love the musical Into the Woods, and want to see the movie...but after how awful Merle Streep was in Mama Mia, I am real hesitant. I'm thinking musical is a different genre than Abba music, so it might not be as bad.... So any Peas that have seen it, is it worth seeing on the big screen, or wait till it comes out on T.V or cable. thanks

We saw it over the weekend and all liked it. It got a bit long in the end though. It's over 2 hours long.

I think I'll wait for Netflix. I'm still haunted by how bad Mama Mia was and it turned me off musicals for a while.

Loved Meryl Streep. She has such fun playing her part. I wasn't thrilled to go see the movie and ended up enjoying it. It is worth the price of admission to see the two princes sing "Agony".
I have heard some people are disappointed it is all sung but I like light opera so that didn't T bother me and if you are familiar with the stage version it should be expected.
The wolf really skirted the line of good taste for me but that's Johnny Depp for you.

pb, we must have seen a different movie?! The movie wasn't all sung? There was lots of talking? Did love the princes and Agony though! And not sure of how the wolf was not in good taste? LOL!
I would recommand seeing it, esp if you have seen it in theater and liked it!

I will admit I had no idea what this movie was about other than "Cinderella" according to my kids. I had never heard of a stage version. So I had no idea it was a musical so it took me a minute to transition (not sure my kids knew, either, twin 13 year olds and an 8 year old). But we really like the movie. It was very funny at times. Meryl Streep was very good. It did get a little long near the end for a movie, but I would recommend going - as long you know it is a musical LOL.

A big Yay here! We took a family outing to the El Capitan in Hollywood and saw it there. We all loved it. Everyone did a great job with their roles, even Meryl Streep ?. They had all of the costumes on display at the theater, too, so that was fun to see.

It was OK. Went with a friend and our daughters. The girls liked it, the adults thought it was "eh". I was not aware it was a musical so that threw me off a bit. It did get long towards the end. The Princes singing Agony had me laughing and I do agree that the wolf was not exactly in good taste.

If you love the musical, you'll love the movie. Meryl Streep was really good, but my favorite was Little Red - SHE was excellent at her part! It got a little long for DD7, but I was fine w/ the length. The princes were hilarious!

I liked it but I'm a musical theater geek. My husband thought it was the worst thing ever but he doesn't like musicals either.

I was impressed with the job Meryl Streep did.
Signed a vocal performance major.

I have nothing to add here except the only reason I even want to see this movie is Chris Pine. Probably going to wait for on demand...

I liked it, but I like musical theater. I was impressed with Meryl Streep and I studied voice in college. I hated Mama Mia, if that helps.
I am perplexed with people who say they hated it, but had no idea it's a musical. I want to respond with, "Seriously???"

Here's my take as a long-time lover of the musical.
The movie was good - good enough that I would recommend it to friends. The casting was really good. Meryl did a fantastic job, and I was truly surprised and impressed with how well Chris Pine and Anna Kendrick did, also.
The things I didn't like - they minimized and, frankly, almost eliminated the roll of the Baker's father and in doing so cut my favorite song from the musical, "No More" (the duet between the two). I feel it's a very important song - a pivotal point in the story. That one really chapped me and where I was totally enthralled in it to that point, it lost a good bit of its magic when that happened.
They also cut the Baker's Wife's song about justifying the beans, which is a funny one, but I didn't miss that one until after the show was over, so it wasn't as important.
As for the movie being long, it's supposed to be. It's based on a full length Broadway musical, which runs for three hours, so cutting it down to two and still doing it justice is a monumental task. Making it shorter would have been nothing short of butchery.
If you like the musical, you will really enjoy the movie. They did a good job with it. I only wish they'd left that one number in and let the Baker's father have his due.
ETA: Yes, I think you should see it in the theater to get the full effect. One of my SO's complaints about the original musical is that there isn't a huge "showstopper" kind of song (I disagree - I think "Last Midnight" is that song), but it was all so rich on the big screen that it made up for it for him and he enjoyed it.

All of his lines are supposed to have a double meaning and he's supposed to be skeezy. Jen

My mil took my 13yo and 7yo to see it and I barely heard a word about the movie. That means they didn't like it.

I loved it! Loved it!
Of course Johnny Depp as the Wolf skirted the line of good taste. Many of the stories had two levels, one the fairy tale, the other dealing with sexuality. His character was all about seduction - and so is Red Riding Hood's song "I Know Things Now."
Mother said, "Straight ahead," Not to delay or be misled. I should have heeded Her advice... But he seemed so nice.
And he showed me things Many beautiful things, That I hadn't thought to explore. They were off my path, So I never had dared. I had been so careful, I never had cared. And he made me feel excited- Well, excited and scared.
When he said, "Come in!" With that sickening grin, How could I know what was in store? Once his teeth were bared, Though, I really got scared- Well, excited and scared- But he drew me close And he swallowed me down, Down a dark slimy path Where lie secrets that I never want to know, And when everything familiar Seemed to disappear forever, At the end of the path Was Granny once again.
So we wait in the dark Until someone sets us free, And we're brought into the light, And we're back at the start.
And I know things now, Many valuable things, That I hadn't known before: Do not put your faith In a cape and a hood, They will not protect you The way that they should. And take extra care with strangers, Even flowers have their dangers. And though scary is exciting, Nice is different than good.
Now I know: Don't be scared. Granny is right, Just be prepared.
Isn't it nice to know a lot! And a little bit not.

DH, DD13, DD15 and I went to see it last week. DH, DD and I all liked it; DS did not (but he didn't want to see it in the first place, so I think he was determined not to like it). I did think it was a bit long. I did some Google research on it afterward (the deal with the Baker's Wife and the Prince seemed to come out of nowhere for me) and now I get it.

I wasn't impressed with the changes they made to make it family friendly. It didn't suck, but it wasn't great either.

DH and I saw it because we'd seen his high school kids do it and loved their amateurish version. I really liked it, but DH thought it dragged. Honestly, since he despises musical theater (other than Spamalot), I was shocked that he suggested seeing it at all.
"Agony" was worth the price of admission by itself. And the skeeviness of the Wolf is very close to a Freudian reading of the Red Riding Hood fairy tale itself.

Loved "Agony". (Billy Magnussen graduated from our high school...5 yrs before my eldest arrived at the school...but still LOL...and apparently Billy was at the local theater on Christmas Day)
I loved the musical and was really looking forward to the movie...but in all honesty, I didn't love it as much as I thought I would. I'm not a Meryl Streep fan (nor am I a hater) but I did not love her performance.
I remember hearing the peas mention how "creepy" Johnny Depp was as the Wolf...but I just didn't see it. Maybe it's because that's exactly what I expected from the Wolf.
I did love Little Red's attitude though.

I also have a purist attitude towards any movie that is coming from a great book or play and I thought this was well done. I was iffy on some of the choices for actors, but they did beautifully and really kept to the integrity of the play. It was excellent!

One of my SO's complaints about the original musical is that there isn't a huge "showstopper" kind of song (I disagree - I think "Last Midnight" is that song), So, Mr. Sondheim doesn't always adhere to the "11 o'clock number" rule? Shocking, right? I thought it was as good a film interpretation of the play as is possible. Maybe not as good as Chicago, but Rob Marshall is still really impressive. I thought the look and mood of the film was spot-on.

I didn't see Mama Mia (I have never liked music by Abba) but have seen Into the Woods twice (and im typically not a movie goer). That's how much I enjoyed it. It's a completely different animal than Mama Mia, and I thought Meryl Streep (along with everyone else) did a great job!
