Another voice major who thinks Meryl did a good job. Actually I thought all the performances were very good. I was particularly excited to see Tracy Ullman and Christine Baranski - I hadn't read much press before seeing the show and didn't know they had supporting roles. My issues with the movie were with the cuts, which made it feel choppy and disjointed to me, and particularly with the cut of "No More Giants," which is the whole thematic underpinning of the show to me. And I missed the ensemble feeling - in a stage production, all the people singing are onstage even if they're not "together" at that point. In the movie, they're able to just cut from one scene to the other so the actors could be miles apart. I particularly noticed this during "No One is Alone." But that's nitpicky, I guess. As an aside - since Hollywood has now made two of the major musicals of my youth into movies with Les Mis and Into the Woods, I would like to vote that the next one they do fro that era be The Secret Garden.

I'm a big musical theatre fan and Sondheim is a favorite, so I specifically stayed away from any mentions/teasers/trailers of this movie as I didn't want to get my hopes raised only to be disappointed in the movie. I HATED Meryl Streep in Mama Mia, so that was part of the reason too. I didn't want her to ruin Into the Woods for me before I saw it, lol. That being said, I enjoyed it enough to recommend it, but I didn't love it. DH and I saw the Into the Woods reunion with the original Broadway cast only a couple months ago. Their performances are so fresh in my memory, that the movie version didn't stand a real chance with me. Meryl Streep has nothing on Bernadette Peters.
