We are thinking about going to Maui. I started reading hotel reviews and its pretty overwhelming. We will be there about a week, so a hotel is better than a condo. I don't want to pay $300/night, but I am partial to VERY clean, nice places with great service. Thought I'd ask the Peas. And while I'm at it, maybe some ideas for fun things to do? We don't care too much about whales watching, because we can do that a lot at home. But I love dolphins. So interacting with them is always awesome, and on the big island we just swim out there and let them come to us. I don't want to see captive ones. What about a snorkel cruise? Have you a recommendation? We would love that. I've never been to Maui so its my last island to explore that I have not been to (of the normal destinations), but we like just going to the beach as well. (We live in Alaska, so just being in the hot sun is a complete pleasure).
Thanks for any and all ideas/reviews, and also tips about places and things to avoid!

Skip the Maui Plantation Tour- not worth the money. The gift shop does have lots of Hawaiian products though. If you don't mind getting up really early, the sunrise from Haleakala is spectacular.
The Road to Hana is a beautiful drive. I have driven it and taken a tour and I recommend a tour. We used Valley Isle Excursions and loved it. The vans hold 12 people in comfortable seats and you get a breakfast and a wonderful picnic lunch ( compared to sandwiches offered by other tour companies). Highly recommend it

We stay at the Napili Kai Beach Resort. It has a nice, kind of retro feel to it. We get a lanai condo (timeshare rental) and have the beach right at our door. And toads. The beach there is nice and calm, with soft sand. The snorkeling is nice, but not stellar. We have seen a three legged sea turtle (assuming it's the same one) there each time we have been. I much prefer it to a non-resort condo, because we don't have to pack up the car to go to the beach, drive, and then find parking, and if we get tired, hungry, or need the bathroom, it's right there.
Fun things to do- submarine, America Cup sailboat cruise, Old Lahaina Luau (they have a historical one at brunch time- great historical reenactment), Molokini snorkel/SNUBA trip.
Something I always have wanted to do, but haven't made it to, is the tour of the leprosy colony at Molokai.

We stayed at the Westin Ka'annapali through a timeshare that a friend had (we did have to listen to the 90 minute spiel though). We did have a small kitchen and ate breakfast in most mornings. We loved driving up the coast north from there...lots of neat little places to stop. Wished we had taken a picnic lunch.
Personally I saw the whales in Maui first and then in Alaska....there was something to be said about seeing them in both habitats. So seeing them in Maui didn't stop me from wanting to do so in AK...but if you live there, I can understand it being meh.....
We loved wandering LaHaina and eating at Cheeseburger Paradise on the harbor and watching boats.... We went to the Iao Valley State Park and while small, it was fun and yes, we went past the "do not go past here" sign because there was such an obvious trail. But we like easy hiking.....
In another posting, I did put that I wish looking back now that we had snorkeled from a boat. That is my one regret (the family learned to snorkel at Atlantis a couple years after Maui....)
One thing we did was to fly into Honolulu and then on to Maui (from Houston). Then on the way home we had a whole day in Honolulu and toured Pearl Harbor and all their exhibits. I wouldn't trade that day for the world. Now that we are on the East Coast, I very much doubt we will make it back to HI.

I love Maui. I think its the most beautiful island. I think you will do fine in that price range, hotels actually aren't that expensive in Hawaii. I don't have specific recommendation as I stay in condos.
I used Trilogy charters. It's a family run business, they were very good, very professional. The tour we did actually took us to Lanai to snorkel off of the beach. They provide breakfast, you can watch whales on the way, then there's a lunch bbq on Lanai. It was an awesome experience back in 2009.
The road to Hana is my fav too, done that twice. It's just so amazing to see all the sights. And the crazy part of the drive is fun too. I like Lahaina too for restaurants and walking/shopping, but it def got more built up last time I was there versus years ago.
I think the key with prices and Hawaii is to just plan in advance, also to ensure you get the reservations you want. I lucked out with a condo that had a cancellation, which was normally booked up to 2 years in advance, and I was planning a year ahead.

Do some research on swimming with dolphins and decide if you are okay with the implications of that. We did a night swim with manta rays as an alternative.
Powered Hanggliding with Armin at the Hana airport is the best money I've ever spent on vacation

Another vote for the Napili Kai Beach Resort, but that is a condo and not a hotel. The beach was lovely and our room was great. And it was nice to have the kitchen for breakfast, snacks and some lunches. We ate out most lunches and dinners, however.
Maui is beautiful. I recommend the book "Maui Revealed".

We have been twice, once we stayed at the Sheraton and other time the Westin Villas mentioned above. I liked the Sheraton better for the pool, snorkeling, and being able to walk to the Whaler's Village.
We have done the Trilogy snorkel tour to Lana'i twice. Awesome day.
Haleakala - once for the sunrise and once just during the day. Both are neat, the sunrise was spectacular. Do early in the trip and getting up that early is easier. Beware, it is COLD up there and very windy.
As mentioned above, wandering around Lahania.
Best thing though is just chilling out and relaxing!
ETA: we saw dolphins on our boat tour. They almost stop the boat when they are near to not disrupt/hurt them. The dolphins put on a little show for us and even did some jumping. I'm not sure swimming with them is a favorable activity, most of the tours seem pretty protective of them.

Maui has been our favorite vacation destination and we've done it enough times that we no longer do many of the touristy stuff that others might do. Our favorite activity is this hike near Hana. We've gone twice on the tour but now go on our own, www.hikemaui.com/hikes/east-maui-waterfalls-rainforest-hike/It's always our best day there. We always do a snorkeling tour and I have to recommend the Alii Nui, it is by far the nicest of all the boats we've been on. aliinuimaui.comI think we've done just about every excursion there is to do there: luaus, shopping, boat charters, sunrise at Haleakala, ziplining,, road to Hana and more. Some are things you have to do just once and repeat each visit and some are a once and cross that off the list experience. The only thing I have no desire to do is ride a bike down Haleakala. I've met too many people over the year who broke a bone doing that and that's not how I want to remember my vacation. We now only stay in Wailea and that is probably the more pricier side of the island, but we've fallen in love with it We already have booked our trip there for this summer.

I second Trilogy tours! We did a whale watching tour and it was awesome. We really liked driving the road to Hana, we took our time and lingered at spots along the way. Also, we did a bike ride down Haleakala which was amazing! Like bearmom said, it's freaking cold up there, so bring layers if you drive up. We also LOVE the Old Lahaina Luau. Totally worth the money! We stayed in a house in Lahaina for the week (the house was on Front street, the main street in town with all the cute little shops & such) and it was perfect! Here's the cottage we rented: Lahaina Cottage

They will stand out because the boats stop and go a lot literally chasing the Dolphins. I wont pretend to be all PETAish but when I was researching the best tours I came across information that made me decide it wasn't an ethical vacation activity.

Why would you want a hotel rather than a condo if you are staying a week? I much prefer the condo set up so we don't have to eat every meal out, but that's must me! We did find loads of things to do on Ka'annapali area. Kids took surfing lessons just steps from our condo. Whaler's Village is right there with loads of restaurants and shops. We walked to a luau, walked down to Black Rock to do snorkeling. It was a wonderful place for families to stay.

We visited Maui for the first time last summer - it was me, my dh, our ds (10), dd (10), ds (8)and my 80 year old mother. We also stayed at the Westin in Ka'anapali and I loved it there. The pool was amazing and the kids had a blast. It's right next door to Whalers Village which has shopping and restaurants.
We rented a car and did the road to Hana on our own, making stops wherever we wanted along the way, and actually kept going and drove all the way around the island instead of turning around - that's not recommended by the rental car agencies by the Park Ranger at the Seven Sacred Pools said it would be fine and he was right. The scenery wasn't as grand but it was a much more direct route than the road to Hana. We did sunset at Haleakala which was fun (and cold!).
We took at day trip to the big island of Hawaii (I believe you always need to fly to other islands as ferries aren't offered). We took an organized tour there and spent most of our time in Volcano National Park (awesome) but also some time in Hilo.
We did a weekly rental of snorkel equipment for everyone at a local place and my ds saw a turtle in the water right off the beach at our hotel.
We did the Old Lahaina Luau and also dined in a couple of the local restaurants in Lahaina right on the water - so, so nice.
We also did a catamaran snorkeling trip right off the beach of the hotel - the boat literally came right up to shore. This was a last minute excursion and one of my favorites of the trip - we motored out to a cove north of Ka'anapali, saw a huge pod of dolphins, snorkeled and saw many sea turtles and fish and than sailed back to the hotel. Breakfast and lunch was provided. I can't remember which company it was but it was arranged right at the hotel.
I'm envious of your trip - enjoy!!

I agree, a condo is better even if only for a week. You can buy local fruit (pineapple!!) and cut it up in the kitchen. Have your morning coffee or tea, a real sized fridge for drinks, lunches, etc. Food is very expensive on Maui. We usually eat breakfast in the condo for much less than you could buy it out. We are in Maui right now, we stayed one week in the south (Outrigger Wailea Palms) and now we're in Kaanapali (Aston Kaanapali Villas), but if you're interested in staying in Kaanapali I would recommend Outrigger Maui Eldorado, they have a really nice cabana down at the beach. The Sheraton is right next to that resort which is hotel rooms, I've never stayed there but it's in a great location.

We stayed in Wailea and next time will stay in Kaanapali area. We found there was a lot more to do there and in La Haina, then the other end were we were. (I'm sure I am butchering these names)
Our favorites were Haleakala (volcano), a snorkel trip that dropped us on Lanai for the day and a helicopter ride. We did the road to Hana and it was beautiful, but it was an all day trip (sun up to sun down) and we were beat by the time we got back to our hotel.
Enjoy your trip!

We stayed at the Westin Villas (timeshare condos) mentioned earlier. Loved it so much we are headed back next month!
We did the drive to Hana ourselves. So amazing. And this is from someone scared of high mountain passes. If you do plan to do it Google and make a list of which turnouts you want to stop at. We took the entire day from 6am to 7pm for the drive there and back and am so happy we planned out each stop. Even still I'd want more time at different areas.
Took the shuttle from hotel into Lahania and Whalers village for some shopping and dining out.
Enjoyed driving around Maui and hitting the common tourist spots. This time we are going to explore a bit more south into the McKenna Beach area. I hear it's amazing as well. Also for this trip we booked with Gemini Charters for whale watching. Boards right at the beach infront of Whalers village I believe. So can't wait for next month!
Have fun, Maui is breathtaking.

Napili Kai for us too, it's my favorite place to be. We've had family reunions there several times, absolutely wonderful. The beach is right there and the waters are calm, you can walk to another beach at Kapalua that is good for snorkeling too.
I love Maui, we plan to go back this summer and I can't wait!!
