I admit I only read the first book in the series and then turned dd loose. It is her favorite series (voracious reader) and she quotes it all the time, to the point of annoyance lol. I do not know which book it's from, but the humour does seem to match a couple of the main characters... I don't think it references the books, but can see how she may have seen the shirt or meme someplace and thought that it did. It appears fairly popular in the 20-something group, none of whom reference the youth fiction series. I think that your daughter is mistaken about the reference, but even if it did refer to the book, it is about someone killing others, which isn't what I'd send my kids to school in. View AttachmentView AttachmentView AttachmentFair enough. I will ask her if she can pinpoint the book when she gets home from fencing class.

I'm quite liberal and my honest opinion is No, that is not appropriate for school. I don't know what it's in reference too but with all the school violence now a days, that is totally inappropriate.

I will respectfully disagree that other inappropriate t-shirts are irrelevant, though. To single out one thing and not others, why would she (or me, for that matter) have ever guessed that there is even a dress code? IYGWIM? Yours promotes violence. The others don't. (Although I am surprised that the sexy language t-shirts aren't also banned.)

Yeah, wearing anything that references murdering people to school is kind of in poor taste. Your kid wasn't asked to stop wearing it. Her teacher asking her questions about it was a good thing. Clearly it created some conversation and thoughtfulness for your daughter. That's a good thing. I don't find the shirt offensive, but it's one of those things I'd never wear to school (or allow my child to wear to school). It's a kicking around the house kind of shirt. What I really don't want is for her to get called down to the principal's office or asked (publicly) to remove it. This would humiliate her, and she can be sensitive. I can see that this is a possibility, though, so we'll keep it to her outside school activities. Hardly bad parenting, lol. Just a case of not thinking things thru, maybe. Probably a good idea not to let her wear it to school. And kudos to you for keeping cool while explaining your reasoning and citing your source for the quote. This thread got on the verge of handslappy and you never got snippy. Hope this doesn't send you back into lurkdom!

I don't care where the reference is from, it's just not appropriate and I can't believe no thought was even taken to consider that it might be misconstrued and that it might be appropriate to even wear at ALL. DH is pretty much the most open "oh well" kind of person and even he was like seriously?

But that doesn't mean it's the original source of the quote or reference. No maybe not, I can't find anything else though.

I'll be the only person to say that I wouldn't have thought the shirt inappropriate if one of my students had shown up with it on.
I see it as snark and not violent.
However, I would not be upset if the school asked my kid not to wear it.

In case this thread gets crazy (you never know lol - I told you, long time lurker ) I am off to pick up my kids from school and won't be back on-line for a few hours. I will check back and address my poor parenting skills at that time She didn't abandon the thread because it didn't go her way. In fact, I think she is taking the responses in stride.

Dd is 12 and for Christmas I made her a t-shirt that says "Good Morning. I see the assassins have failed". Personally, I think the t-shirt is funny. In the current climate, you really need to ask if this appropriate for a 12 year old child to wear to school?? Honestly??
Sounds as if the teacher was concerned and dealt with it in a very diplomatic way by asking your dd if she actually knew what she was wearing.
The fact that school violence hasn't touched your area is not an excuse imo to not knows what's been going on in the last 10 years worldwide, I don't think it has to be happening on your own doorstep for you to be aware of it.
Sorry if that sounds harsh but I get a bit annoyed with parents who think that teachers have overreacted or are in the wrong for caring about their children

I don't know what that phrase means, but it sounds like your daughter is a big reader and it relates to her books. I think there are other shirts that girls/boys wear that are worse! I wouldn't do a shirt like that for my child, but I have no problem with you doing it for your child. I may be wrong, but it sounds like only one teacher was concerned.

Given our school's current dress code, I would say "no" to one of my kids wearing the shirt. Students here aren't even allowed to wear anything with a professional sports team logo though.
I don't have a problem with the humor in your quote and would assume it was a book or movie reference even if I don't specifically recognize it.
It doesn't sound like your district has a dress code (or an enforced dress code) and I could defend my child wearing that over most of the other things you have noted, so where you are I'd probably continue to let DD wear it.

I don't get the reference, and I don't really care that I don't.
I see the shirt as saying something like she's so important people are after her but she escaped to live another day. I love the sarcasm of it and I think I can see why she loves it so much.
Our schools have/are going to uniform dressing for a number of reasons and graphic t-shirts and t-shirts with sayings on them are pretty high on the list of why. No matter how innocent something may seem to the wearer, it may take on an entirely different meaning to those who are reading it. Considering that this also refers to the violent taking of life and that schools have been forced to prepare for such actions, it's a shirt that specifically will make others uncomfortable.
Why not consider it a good lesson in time and place for your daughter?
I bet it would be a big hit at ComicCon or when playing Magic the Gathering with friends.

I don't find the shirt offensive, but it's one of those things I'd never wear to school (or allow my child to wear to school). It's a kicking around the house kind of shirt. I've seen the memes, gifs, etc. online for a while, and I have that kind of sense of humor. But as you can see, many others don't. School attire is a tricky thing. My rule of thumb was if it would be inappropriate for the/a teacher to wear, then neither could my kids. That took care of skimpy clothes, plus all the sex, drugs, and rock n roll kind of stuff on Tshirts. Doesn't mean we don't have some crazy shirts-it's just that the locations that they're worn are chosen selectively.

I also see it as meaning to be funny or snarky. I also know that at my school we have drills every quarter and just had active shooter training in our building to prepare us for a shooter. Many people don't find anything about this kind of situation funny. I tend to see the humorous side of most things so that I don't go crazy.

My son read the books through a few times, and recently again over Christmas breaks. I'll read him the quote and see if he links the two.
Either way - still not for school probably.

I don't know what that line is from, so I don't get the humor. I personally don't think it's a great choice for school, because if you don't get the reference, it could definitely be taken wrong. Agree with this. I also don't like the other examples of sayings you gave either. I'm clenched up pretty tight, I will admit.

I'll do you one better and admit I'm wrong- I just asked dd and she said it was a random quote she found on the internet. I had assumed it was from her book series, because every morning she writes a new quote on her whiteboard in her room from the series, and this was one that she had written before Christmas. I asked her about it, and she animatedly started talking about Halt and Wil lol.

I've seen that line and thought it was just a funny phrase, didn't realize it was a quote. And reading I guess that's still a possibility... Either way... NOT school attire, even if it is funny. My kids have a few shirts we've deemed off campus only.

Dd, also 12 and an avid reader, didn't get the quote connection. But she did giggle when I read it to her....
When I asked if she would wear it to school her reply was; "ummm, no."

To single out one thing and not others, why would she (or me, for that matter) have ever guessed that there is even a dress code? IYGWIM? Even after having it pointed out to me, I am not making the connection of this involving a school shooting, although the perception of violence is there. I guess it can be equated to making a bad joke at airport security - somewhere else it probably would be funny. My YGWIM is who cares what the other kids are wearing? You asked us about this shirt at school, and many of us have told us it's not appropriate. I'm surprised anyone would take it literally, but that demonstrates the reason to keep it at home. Now, about the others? Not appropriate anywhere, and not funny. A boy I've watched grow up is now a 20 year old college student. He's the most dry, cynical, superior being on the planet at the moment. When I saw him wearing the Good Morning shirt I burst into laughter, It was first time I had seen it. Now it's everywhere as I said above. It was so perfect for his supreme need self. Still, his mom would not have let him wear it to HS, I'm sure.

I would agree with most others that its just not a great shirt for school.
My DD has a shirt that says "I Shoot People" and it has a picture of a camera on it. Photography is her hobby and a class she takes at school. She doesn't wear it to school. It's just not appropriate.

Even before our district became more strict with their dress code, anything that could be deemed violent at all was not allowed on t-shirts.
(This was way back when I was in school.) Now they are not allowed to wear t-shirts at all unless in gym, and then the same rule applies.
But even without that personal background, I'd still think anything joking about being bummed that someone (at school, since they are the folks reading the shirt while she is there) is still alive and kicking instead of being killed by assassins seems inappropriate for a school setting.
