PRESS RELEASEI knew the writing was on the wall... and I hoped they would close because they were just not worth the trip. But didn't expect it that quickly.

Wow! Wasn't there a big to-do when they took over Zellers?

Not surprising... Hard to purchase anything there when there is hardly any stick and it's more expensive than other stores. I've tried going there multiple times only to leave disappointed and vowing to not waste my time again. Stores were empty of a lot of stock (from then the first opened to the last time I went there before Christmas) things were hard to find and prices were laughable. Put it this way it made me think more highly of Walmart!

WOW! But I can't say it surprises me. The Target at the mall has never impressed me since the day it opened. I had high hopes, I love the Target across the line in Bellingham, but Target in Canada never measured up. Shelves were always half empty. You can't buy stuff if they don't have the stock. Their prices weren't any better than Walmart. Now I know some people don't like Walmart, and there are some Walmarts I don't like. The one I shop at is fairly new, is very clean, generally organized, has a huge grocery store in it, and underground parking . But I am sad for the people who will lose their jobs and can't imagine what will go into that spot in the mall. They remodelled and expanded it for Target and it is huge.

We'll go check out the liquidations but I have little hope anything will actually be a good deal.

This sounds bad, because I didn't support them when they were "in business", but I too will go and check out the closing out sales grinningcat.

This makes me sad. Sarah Richardson just announced towards the end of last year she was designing a line for Target.
And a friend of mine uprooted her life and moved her to our town when she purchased the pharmacy in our Target here. We moved our business to Target from Shoppers pharmacy. And we've really enjoyed the service she provides. She goes over and above, and has been great for us. Now we need to find a new one....sigh
I guess, here in our small town, we have Walmart & Target. We enjoyed Target - found some great things there. I'll be sad to see it go.

Maybe if they had have kept their initial promise of "lowest prices" then maybe, just maybe, they wouldn't be closing.
Target here is more expensive than any other store. In fact, prices are often twice the amount of any other discount/department store.
Plus, there is never anything on the shelves. Not to mention, the employees at our local Target are lackluster and very unknowledgeable. We waited to find someone in a nearly empty store to help us find something at Christmas and they were nowhere to be found! When we finally located somebody, they had NO idea of what was in the flyer, on sale, or where we could find it. Three people later and we just said forget it.

Wow. It makes me a little sad that they weren't successful. Although I don't shop there much myself, I did pick up a few things over Christmas and noticed they had some really cute home decor items. The stores were always very clean and orderly, but empty. I guess Walmart rules in Canada.

This makes me sad... The Target closest to me had great stuff... The other Target near me (a whole 3 minutes further down the road - no kidding), didn't though... Always wondered why they opened stores so close to each other - either one big store or two smaller Target express/basics type stores might have worked...
I don't like Walmart, and Target was the only non-Walmart basic department store type place left around here...
Back to weekend trips to Buffalo...lol

If they hadn't screwed up so royally at the very beginning they may have had a shot to succeed. But it's almost like they wanted to fail with all the mistakes they made.

Alienating your customers right off the bat doesn't exactly set up a rosy future for you.

Back to weekend trips to Buffalo...lol We've been speculating that HBC would try a discount store again. Since they have jacked The Bay to a ridiculously high price point, there's no place for anything reasonably priced. As an aside, did you know that The Bay in downtown Toronto has a Fur Shop? I had no idea that anyone still sold fur... but according to the ad I heard this morning, they are having a sale!

Any time a business fails it makes me incredibly sad. I liked our Targets in my city. The home décor stuff was cute and a good price. The candy and chocolates at Christmas were cheaper than Shopper's and Metro.
It definitely adds to my worries about the economy. Just doesn't bode well at all.

Where I live, the Vancouver suburbs, the competition is between Walmart and the Real Canadian Superstore (Loblaws). There just wasn't room for Target unless it was going to be spectacular!
They are currently building a Real Canadian Superstore right across the street from the Super Walmart I shop at. Now that is going to be interesting.

The candy and chocolates at Christmas were cheaper than Shopper's and Metro. I found the exact opposite. There were some different things available but I didn't see any massive savings. Not even after the holidays. Shoppers always has the best deals on seasonal candy, in my experience. But I've never had a good vibe about Target. I think it was their cocky attitude when they came into the marketplace. I'm not worried about the economy. This will drive more people to other stores. And that's a good thing.

My thought on that - they hired TWO of the former Zellers employees. And in a smaller town, I think a lot of people avoided it because of that. But lately it has seemed pretty busy. The parking lot always had a lot of cars in it. And the quality was a step up from Walmart, but not big department store level, so it was a nice in between place.

I see Loblaws going more into the super department store arena, what with their move to buy Shoppers and all of that. I will shop Loblaws stores over Walmart any day. The savings are minimal, when I've tried to compare, and the environment is so so so much nicer.

I love Shoppers. They have some awesome deals on their food items every week. We buy our eggs, milk and pop there every week because they are so much cheaper. I love Superstore. Ours nearest one is in Grimsby but it's only 15 minutes.

The only Sears I know of (not that I've looked hard) that is close to me is Oakville. Sherway... Gone. Downtown Toronto Eaton's Centre... Gone. And Sears is hit or miss too. And sometimes just weird. But yes, it's there. Sort of.

Thankfully, our WalMart was just getting up and running (which took forever and a day because of some environmental issues in the ground - leading to them having to replace the whole floor with something special - so apparently ours has the most expensive floor of any Walmart in Canada) and I see quite a few of my old Zellers peeps there these days. (yes I shop there - mostly groceries for the biz) But the staff at Target was always helpful and friendly. ANd of course, this means Fergus will also no longer have Starbucks...

We have more Starbucks than we know what to do with all of them, and they're always busy. So I won't miss the Starbucks at Target.
Besides there is another one at the other end of the mall.
