I decided to try a spinning class and signed up for one that begins later in the month (it's a 5 week session and if I like it, I'd like to continue). A few people that I've talked to think the padded shorts really make a difference, but they are also new to cycling so I was hoping to hear from some that are more experienced and really, I guess I'm just looking for a few more opinions. My dd (19) is taking the class with me so if I buy one pair of shorts, I have to buy two , so I really want to make sure it's an investment worth making. (For the record, I did talk her into going with me, so I feel like it wouldn't be right to cushion myself and let her suffer!)

I find the seats are padded, so they aren't REAL necessary.

Go to one class first to see what the seats of the bike are like. I have been to gyms with padded seats and to ones without. The padded shorts do help if there isn't already a cushion.
And this is just a personal preference, but I don't put them on until I get to the gym and take them off before I leave. I feel like I'm walking around with a full diaper while I wear them.

Absolutely, yes. I was a big-time long distance cycler and also did 3 spin classes a week. Cycling shorts with padding make a huge difference. IMO the best type have a chamois insert, not the cheaper foam padding - and remember - no knickers with them

I've checked out the bikes and the seats are TINY and don't feel very cushioned. I'm sure there is a cushion material of some sort but they are very firm. A friend of mine that just started a few weeks ago told me she felt like she was recovering from child birth.

Yes! Even with padded seats you'll find that this extra barrier of protection is essential! I would second the chamois insert, not foam! I wear "biking skorts" as I'm not a fan of the padding showing.

I ride bikes a lot so I'm used to being in the saddle. I don't usually wear my cycling shorts because I find in spin class that I don't spend that much time in the saddle (lots of hovering). But, if you want a good quality short, look for a brand like Pearl Izumi. For short rides, I wear the Sugar Shorts which should be sufficient for a spin class.

My biggest issue with regular gym attendance is I am sensitive to "energy" I hate a high concentration of male energy that is usually found in gyms... so spinning is perfect for me. I don't feel like anyone is watching me (the room is dark) and its intensive so I burn a lot of calories then high tailing it to Chipotle...or home for salad.

Defintely. But you can also buy a gel pad at Walmart for $11. The problem with that is if you are doing a lot of up and down, it can slip off. Bike shops have padded shorts.

I always just brought along my own gel seat I got at Walmart. Didn't have to worry about having the shorts clean that way . Some bikes need extra cushioning and some don't. Also, if it's really painful, you may just need to adjust the seat forward or backward a bit. It can take some adjustments to get the bike comfortable. I wouldn't continue to ride if it was super painful. Get off and adjust it. Once you get it the way you like it, remember the settings!

I find that TITS helps more than the shorts. Time in the saddle. Desensitizes the lady bits.

I cycled a lot at my previous gym. I never wore the shorts. I found there was a "breaking in" period when you first start cycling. But over time, you desensitize and learn to ride the seat better -- the little adjustments forward/back as well as the tilt that make it more comfortable for you. Also, a good class will have you in-and-out of the saddle multiple times and that helps, too.
