We're looking at a piece of furniture that is quite a large cabinet, about 32" tall x 72" long, but only 9" deep. The cabinet has three sets of doors with chicken wire inserts, and there are 3 fixed shelves inside. In other words... Lots of space to display rather small and narrow objects. The furniture fits the space we want to fill but I am at a loss for what to keep inside. We have built in bookshelves, so books aren't an option unless we acquire a lot more. Suggestions? This will be in our living room. I figure the refupeas will know!

Not quite 3' tall? There is not much at floor level I would want to display.
Old toys ? CDs? DVDs?

I'm not sure, you've stumped me with the chicken wire, whatever you put in there is going to need dusting all the time. In addition, since it's so low, it's not really display space, it'd have to be something incredibly eye catching to attract attention from that level.
That said, depending on what room it was in, I might display my seasonal collections in it. I have a winter snow person collection ( one is my avatar ) and a summer children figure collection that would fit nicely in the 9" depth.

sounds adorable, do you have a pic? is it similar in size to a buffet, but less deep? I would put barware, linens, pretty servingware and such in it. I think really what should be in it would be determined by the location. dining room? see above. living room? barware, books, games/puzzles if they fit.
ETA oops, I see now you said living room.

Can you put some pretty baskets on the shelves to hide the contents. We have some baskets on a desk that are visible that hide the electronic crap like chargers, head phones, wires and other misc. stuff
If you have kids, you could also make it a homework station by using baskets to hold extra paper, markers, calculator and pens.

Is it a pie safe? They tend to be fairly narrow and tall...and some of them have screening of some sort (like the chicken wire.) I have one that I use as a book shelf.
Maybe a picture of the piece could help us visualize it?

This will be on a wall in our living room, then about 3 feet of open space (i.e. a walkway), then the back of our sectional couch. I don't think anyone is really going to look inside, but I also don't want it to sit empty.
For what it's worth - we are going with a black paint finish rather than white, and the interior of the cabinet is black as well.

I like the basket idea... if we can't come up with something decorative then the baskets will hide whatever junk winds up in there. We'll just need to search for narrow baskets. 9" isn't a lot of space for storage, but we want a narrow furniture piece there to keep the walkway unobstructed.

Nice piece, it will look good with a lot of open space, not filled up, especially if it's black with black interior.
Baskets will make it useful! I could use something like this in our entry.

Shells and rocks would look great in a cabinet of that type. If you don't have those and don't wish to, how about nautical themed items?

Do you like carved folk art pieces? I think this would be a great cabinet for displaying something like that.

Do you really need this?
If you are just trying to fill a space, maybe a painting would work ? Or do you all ready have something on the wall above it?

This was my first thought/question too. If you have a collection you want to display, then this would make sense. Otherwise, I would look for a large artwork piece to hang on the wall and fill the space. You will spend less time dusting that way.

I would still do some books even though you have bookshelves. It's okay to have them in a couple spots. Maybe some colorful bowls, or picture frames?
Just don't FILL it, it looks like it's best left partially open.

I collect milk glass, so if I had something like this in my house it would be perfect for some of my pieces. Do you have something that you collect, like glassware or figurines, or vases or something that might work? I saw upthread mention of pottery pieces, that could look lovely depending on your decorating style.

She needs somthing for the back of her couch, ladies. Decorators don't like to see the back of a couch. (Mine is hanging out there bare though ) I dont know what to put in there. Maybe because I don't really care for the chicken wire.

I'd probably just put a few select decorative pieces in it and call it good. A couple books, a vase, a pretty rock, etc.

Something non-breakable. If it's at the back of the couch, it might get tussled a little bit as people sit and stand.
Maybe photo boxes? If you go with storage, something with a lid, as people will look down into the cabinet so you don't want open baskets.

So this is going along the back of your couch?
I would look for a nice table with a shelf. Or a cabinet with glass doors.
That chicken wire screams dog hair catcher to me.

It's going against your sofa? I understood it to be against a wall. Not that it matters really...
It would be nice against a wall with art hanging above it. If next to sofa be sure as check height compared to the back.

Less is more... maybe a few books, some pretty dishes, teapots, etc.
I was under the impression it would go against a wall based on the OP description, I think it's too tall to go behind a sofa.

It's going on a wall - across from the back of the sofa.
Thanks for all the thoughts and ideas. I'd like to put something there and not just hang art on the wall. It's around the corner from our back door and I'd like to have a 'landing strip' to drop mail, keys, etc. But because it's in the living room, I don't want to go fully practical with it and have hats and mitts inside... would prefer more decorative.
I think maybe I will start with a bit of everything (some books, some pottery, some baskets) and see if any one of those grabs me once we get it home and set up. I don't want to drop a lot of money on filling it and especially not if I'm not sold on what goes inside.
I don't have any collections today... but this may be a good reason to start one!

I'd get rid of the Xes and the chicken wire, then put some of my antique books, doilies/linens, and my teacup collection there. Some sort of greenery too. Maybe some pretty baskets/boxes/bowls on top to hold keys, etc like you mentioned, but with something tallish also, to add interest- lamp, candle, etc.
