I love Jimmy Fallon and was so excited to hear he would be doing four shows in LA the first week of February. Tickets were released at 10am today and after a few panicky moments where everything was sold out, I ended up getting two tickets for the Monday 2/2 show. Unfortunately that is the most expensive day to fly as it's 13 days away and Southwest has GREAT fares ($49 each way) for 14-day advance. But, a quick change of airports dropped the $328 RT to $154 RT which was then "free" with points. I didn't even have enough points for a one-way with my original departure city. I picked up a car rental for $25, so this will be a quick/cheap trip!
Leave my mom's house at 6am for the airport
Depart Oakland around 9am, arrive in Burbank (my favorite "quick" airport) around 10am.
Get rental car and drive to Universal Studios (hope to be there by 11:30am)
Check-In for the show is 12:30-2:30pm
Show is recorded from 4:00-5:15/5:30
Leave Universal Studios hopefully by 6, get back to airport and return car by 7:15
Flight back to Oakland at 8pm, arrive just after 9pm
Drive to my mom's to get my dog, then back to Sacramento.
On my couch by 11:35pm to watch the show that I just saw taped!
Teach the next day!
UPDATE: I went yesterday and it was so fun! There was a lot of waiting around but it was worth it. My plane landed early and it was really easy to get my rental car (though I hadn't flown to Burbank in a while and didn't realize they moved all the rental cars to a new location that is quite a walk away).
My friend got to the line at 10:40 and I got there around 11:15 after stopping to grab a water and some snacks. There were multiple lines as the crowd grew (we were in the first group) and they started check-in at 12:30. We got our wristbands and tickets with assigned seats (I'd emailed to request an aisle which we got). After going through security, we each bought a t-shirt then sat in the holding area for a couple hours. The line for the bathrooms (port-a-potty) at one point was a 30 minute wait, but we were told it was the only one available, so many waited in line.
At around 2:30, the people with monologue tickets were taken to the studio in the tram. The rest of us were taken by row around 3:00-3:30. We were in row K, so we were on the third tram group. The tram ride was about 6 minutes and we got a mini studio tour on the way. At the studio there was a "real" bathroom with actual stalls and hot water
We got in to the theater around 3:30 and hung out while everyone got seated. They did some crowd warm-ups and my friend was put on the spot for a while since she's visiting from the UK. The Roots came out around 3:45 and had a little jam session.
Finally, at about 3:58 it got crazy as everyone was running around and the energy totally changed. It was awesome. The show started with the "Fresh Prince of Bel Air" intro and then before I could fully comprehend, Jimmy was walking out.
The guests were fun (Michael Keaton and Gwen Stefani) and Gwen's performance was great! The Roots were awesome in person and Jimmy was really friendly. While they were setting up the stage for Gwen (took about 10 minutes) he was out talking with the crowd. At the end of the show, he runs up the aisle giving high fives, so that was definitely a highlight!
All too soon it was over and we were back on the trams. We walked around City Walk for a few minutes and got some mini donuts before I left for the airport. I was required to fill the gas tank and provide a receipt, so for the 16 miles that I drove, I paid $1.10 in gas
My flight home was empty - everyone got their own row so I took a little nap. I didn't drive home, I crashed at my mom's house instead and left early this morning. I was exhausted and didn't even stay awake long enough to watch the show but I did wake up early this morning to watch it and saw myself a few times. Most were really quick, but at the end when he runs up the stairs, I'm on the screen for at least 15 seconds
