Find the County Clerk's office (or whatever division handles BCs for your county) and look it up online. The price varies widely from county to county. For Las Vegas, I had to order from an outside company and affirm that I had an allowable relationship to the person (DGS) and it was something like $23 each. For our local county, it was easier and cheaper, but that was also a few years earlier. Things change.

In my county I just go to the county clerk's office and fill out a very short form, pay $10, show my id and they make a copy immediately. Took me 10 minutes from the time I pulled into the parking lot, go in to get the copy and get back to my car. Totally painless.

google birth certificates state's name.
Oklahoma isn't done by county. You contact the department of health for the state. Oklahoma charges $15 as a "search fee" and one copy of the certificate.

See if your state uses vitalchek.com It's more expensive than contacting the county directly, but faster.

Los Angeles county is similar (except for the 10 minute timeframe), but the system often goes down. Then, it takes two weeks to mail it. There are so many people who just scream at the poor clerks, because they need the thing NOW! 5-7 weeks sounds way too long.

Vitalcheck.com is awesome. If you need a long birth certificate vs a short one. Check that you need it for a passport. I ended up having to purchase a second birth certificate because the website (for Illinois) was not clear on that point.

Here you go to the department of Vital Statistics (the most HATED department in all of the public service LOLOL). You go to their office, show id and they send you what you are looking for. You can get copies of marriage, birth, and death certificates there. If you live away from the city, I am sure you can do it online very easily, and avoid "them".

Check to make sure that there is an official seal on the birth certificate. One elementary school asked why DS's cert didn't have a number. He was born in New Jersey in 1997 and we ordered several at the time of his birth. They have the state seal on them (raised, embossed stamp), but no number. I told the school I didn't know why there wasn't a number, but it was good enough for him to get a passport. They said they would take it because of the seal. DS attended 4 elementary schools, but the Virginia school is the only one who commented on the lack of a number.

I got mine from the courthouse downtown (I'm sure it was a specific office, but I can'tremember which one) for myself and DS2. I got DS1's when he started PPCD with the school district. And I was able to go online to get it for DH. Although, I'd say it took 5-7 weeks for his.
I'm glad we have them all.
