Yes, I've known several, but I didn't know them when they were actually incarcerated, but found out later. The most interesting one was an older fellow who we met through a family member. He was getting married again, to a lovely woman. He was very soft-spoken and gentle. I found out later that he had served 17 years in prison when he was younger for being the 'kingpin' behind a huge drug bust! Wow, I never would have thought it. I guess people can change after all.

My nephews dad was in jail for a month for DUI and hit and run. Actually it was because he didn't pay the fines incurred from the DUI and hit and run. All the idiot had to do was pay the fines and he would have had no jail time. He said he kept "forgetting". He was in jail a lot for DUI when he was younger. He had been sober for 16 years before this happen.
My sisters other ex was also in jail a few times. She knows how to pick them.
My father was in jail for threatening to kill his ex wife who was his wife at that time.

My cousin was in prison for 8 years for vehicular homicide. He was drunk and wrecked, and the passenger with him died. I think they were both 18. When he got out, he really turned his life around. He got married and raised a family. He is also heavily involved in his community's programs to prevent drunk driving.
My husband's sister has been in jail for drug-related charges multiple times. She's also served time for check fraud.

I teach high school so unfortunately I have known a lot of people that have been/are in jail.
On a more personal level my neighbor was locked up for drunk driving (3 strikes you're out).

One of my grand-dad's brothers was in a prison camp during WW2 because of his involvment in the Resistance. I don't know if that counts?

I know many, but closest to me is my brother, who has been in and out of jail and prison for alcohol related offenses and driving without a license. Thankfully he has never been in an accident or hurt anyone, but he is a great example that prison is not a deterrent when someone has a drug or alcohol addiction. When he has been in prison I have visited him as often as possible, but his jail stints I haven't been able to.

Both my FIL's - DH's biological father and his adopted father - have done about a year of prison time each, one for armed robbery as a teen, and the other for insurance fraud about thirty years ago. Neither, fortunately, have been back since.

When I was in college, my best friend's father was tried and convicted of bid rigging. He was the president of a company that did a lot of state & federal road construction. It was a highly publicized trial within the state and was part of a huge FBI undercover operation which resulted in a lot of government officials and contractors going to jail. If I remember correctly, my friend's father went to jail for about three years.

I grew up in a small town. My dad was a cop. My best friends father was the judge. (Yes *the* judge, just had one) I literally know probably a hundred people or more, personally, that have been to jail. It's so much a part of my "normal" that I never realized it would be strange to people.
This is our life now. You can't imagine how many people will try to pull the friend card. We know many judges and love it when someone goes in front of them and say I know Jess & Dan. To which the judge says I do to & moves on. Growing up I grew up in a small town probaly only 200 people. Our neighboring town had close to 1000. So we knew many people who went to jail & still keep up with several judges from our hometown and always hear about someone we grew up going to jail.
Ugh the dreaded "friend card". We're in a small town and I have zero friends here but this one woman I'm acquaintances with and her son was just arrested for DUI and admitted to being high on pot and pills. She has been blowing my phone up with wanting my help and for me to get DH to help her son. She dropped my name with the arresting officer...it was so embarrassing. As for the OP. In my personal life I honestly have more people I know who have gone to jail and prison (more so jail) than not gone at all. Kinda sad when you think about it.

I was a criminal defense attorney, so I know pleeeenty of people who have been to jail or prison.
As for relatives and social acquaintances, however, no.

Jail, yes. Prison, no. And the person learned their lesson and has been substance free (going to AA/NA regularly) for almost seven years.

My dad was in jail briefly. Committed suicide while out on bail. He would have ended up in prison otherwise.
Thankfully, no one else.

Two that I'm positive about:
-nephew has been in and out of jail multiple times for DUI, for breaking and entering, for theft, for resisting arrest, for . . . . He's an addict that should just be sent to jail and left there. Five rehabs have had no impact on him and he just keeps using and hurting everyone he comes in contact with.
-former student is doing life for getting his GF to lure her ex-boyfriend to a secluded place where student shot and killed him for the drugs and cash the ex had. student was a drug dealer, looking to make a name for himself, and figured the best way was to knock off another drug dealer. Yes, he was in my class in high school at the time. It didn't surprise me at all.

Yes, several. For the majority of them, you wouldn't know it, even if you got to know them. Just stupid, youthful mistakes.
I also had a high school teacher who turned out to be a serial killer, a former co-worker who was convicted of murdering her husband, and one of my friends' dads robbed a bank. You wouldn't have guessed it from any of them.

My neighbor's daughter for stealing, transporting and selling a gun. She didn't steal the gun and she didn't sell, she only transported the 2 idiots that did. The idiots and the buyer didn't go to prison. They turned on her.
A guy I dated shot his neighbor for mowing the lawn too much. If you are in the elmira area, you can look it up.
A guy on my dorm floor went to prison for not rape ( the rumor at the time). I did hear that he was in for drunk driving and killing his passenger in an accident.

Yes, BIL is in prison and will be for about 15 more years- total time 30-35 years. He was in federal prison first and once while visiting I ran into my aunt in the lobby while waiting to go visit. Turns out her 2 sons were there. Nobody knew and she was very embarrassed. They were in for drugs and I believe both are out. BIL is now in a state prison.

I have a family member that spent the better part of a year in Juvie.
My baby brother worked in a jail before he got on with the Sheriff's office. He lives in the same small town we grew up in and "knows" most of the people who end up in jail. He can tell you which ones will stay in jails and which ones will end up in prison eventually. His job has made him very, very jaded.

The boy I sat next to in 4th grade killed his ex-girlfriend when we were in high school. As far as I know he's still in prison. At least one other person I went to grade school with is in jail, I am friends with his twin sister on Facebook.
My cousin was into meth for quite a few years and was in and out of jail for a while. I think she has finally gotten back on her feet, and is in touch with her two kids that she lost custody of while she was addicted.

Yes, I have know numerous people have had done time. Most were in Parish/County facilities but a couple were in prison. One is a lifer at Angola. He was a Three strikes your out. Two of his strikes were in the same night. I know of a few that did time in Parish facilities. Two did their time and never went back. Have gone on to good productive lives. They were about 17 then and are now about 57 so about 40 years ago. One spent about 1.5 years in a Parish jail and then went back a 2nd time but not sure how long he was there the 2nd time. He is out right now. I suspect he will probably go back at some point. I know one that went to a Parish facility. He tried to escape and got shot. Was then sent to Angola. He got out a long time ago. I lost touch about 30 years ago so don't know if he went back in or not. I'm sure there are more but those are the ones I can think of off the top of my head.

A friend spent a few years in prison for a huge growing operation. Someone mentioned that they know someone who teaches quilting at prisons. That's cool. My son's guitar teacher teaches guitar to the prisoners at Folsom once per week.

Sadly I have a 40+ year old nephew currently in prison and has been in and out for almost 30 years. He is a drunk that cannot stay out of trouble. He's up for parole soon but I hope they don't let him out. At least while he's in he has food and shelter and isn't driving my my brother and sister-in-law crazy. To be honest he's crazy and scares the hell out of me. I haven't actually seen him in about 20 years and really have no desire to.

My daughter. She spent a month in jail after being arrested because her boyfriend was a drug dealer. At first she was facing a possibility of 20 years but later all charges were dropped and she pled guilty to "mis-imprisonment of a felon." Basically, that she knew a felony was happening and didn't tell anyone or stop it. What she actually did was sign for a package that was delivered to her apartment. It was payment for meth that was to be sent across the country. She said she didn't know what was in that package but...yeah right. She signed a fake name so that sealed her case. Her boyfriend was in his 30's and she was 21. We do believe her that she didn't know what was going on for a long while in that relationship. To us he seemed like scum but we never dreamed he was a meth dealer. He looked like a weasel. He used her and he used us. She was later sentenced to four months in a prison camp and one month was dropped because of the month she had spent in jail.
She has been home for two years and has turned her life around. Her ex-boyfriend has eight more years in prison. We are hoping he won't get in touch with her when he's out. She has had a stable job for most of these past two years and has a new boyfriend.
It was a horrible time.
