I recently found out that a family acquaintance did a brief stint in the slammer - the same one that Theresa Giudice is at (which is also the one that inspired "Orange is the New Black") for a white collar crime. The son of another family friend just went to jail for a more serious crime. The grandson of my dad's friend - I used to babysit him! - has been in and out of (mostly in) jail for drugs since he was a teenager. So that's three people I know personally! What is your experience? (Edited thread title based on new info.)

Sadly, yes I do. It was many years ago back in England. I visited him a couple of times. It was a horrible situation - drinking/driving/death/loss of a best friend (for the person convicted)

That's sad, Calgal. I'm not close to any of these people to visit them in jail, that must be a very strange and sad experience.

(Yes *the* judge, just had one) I literally know probably a hundred people or more, personally, that have been to jail. It's so much a part of my "normal" that I never realized it would be strange to people.

Yes. Thankfully no one that we're close with. A guy from high school murdered a guy as an adult. One of my friends from elementary and high school was his girlfriend prior to the murder. He gave off an intense vibe.

I have known many people in my life who I am no longer in contact with, so I suppose any one of them could be in jail, and I wouldn't know it. And any of the people I currently know may have served jail time in the past, but I am simply unaware of it. Besides either of those possibilities, yes, I do know one person who is currently in jail and I know one who has been in and out of jail a few times over the course of the last decade. I also know that someone I once knew, but haven't seen in a few decades has recently been arrested and is currently in jail.

Wow, that must have been interesting! I'm picturing Mayberry, of course. Did you have a town drunk, who used to come and lock himself in a cell, like Otis? (This is "The Andy Griffith Show," in case that reference is completely before your time!)

My g-pa did some time for bootlegging back in the day. I couldn't be more proud. Can't blame a man for whiskey. Jen

I was typing before I read any other replies. Seeing calgal08's post reminded me that I met a guy (who is a friend of an in-law) who went to jail for killing his cousin while joyriding when they were both drunk. Not only was he his cousin but his best friend as well. I can't even begin to imagine the amount of heartache that family suffered and their relationship as well.

I recently heard that 95% of the words prisoners are in the US. Do we have that many more criminals than other countries? I don't think so. Running a prison is big business and full of corruptions just like any other government organization. Jen

Yes, I have a family member on death row (deservedly so) for a crime he committed when he was 18. Interestingly enough - and I did not know this before I selected my user name several years ago - the person he committed the crime with is named Standing Feather.

Yes both prison and jail (two different things) My dad was in jail for failure to pay child support in the 70's. My BIL was in prison for drug possession. I have had more then one uncle/cousin in jail for DUIs

I've known a couple people but they aren't in my everyday life. My cousin has been in and out of prison his whole life. He's about 40 now. He's a drug addict and petty theft that can't get his life together.

Back in Roswell, one of my fellow UFO Museum guides was arrested for arson. However it was not intentional, the stove in his crummy apt. caught fire. Or his poor cooking skills started it. Roswell allows county prisoners 1 visitor per month. I saw him the first month, then his parents came to town and I was unable to see him again.
Recently a friend of mine here in Altoona, Alabama was arrested for assault, which may or my not have been correct. He was in jail for about a month and I didn't attempt to visit him. It didn't affect our friendship.
My father killed his mining partner but it was never a known fact outside of the family. As for other misbehaving relatives there probably were/are but I don't know of any.

I have a cousin who was in juvie as a kid, he turned his life around and is now a typical middle-class man/father/husband.
DS's old cub scout leader is currently in prison for custodial interference and suspected in the murder of his 3 sons who have been missing for 4 years.
Dh's biological grandmother was apparently one of the 10 most wanted women in the US many, many years ago. No idea if she was ever caught as no one has heard from her in like 60 years.

I know many people that spent a night or more in jail. I also know several that have been or are in prison. One that I used to play with when we were small children is in prison for murdering his neighbor. His mother is still friends with my mother.

Other than my ex-step brother who had to spend one night in a jail when he was a teen (a friend he was with had pot on him) and they both spent the night in jail. Otherwise, not a single person that I know of..
And that my friends was my 1,000th post! lol
I just remembered and I don't 'know' him at all, but just found out that my neighbor's grandson is in prison for killing his girlfriend at work (she worked as a front desk clerk at a hotel) he went into her work and shot her. Guess he was in the military and going through post traumatic stress syndrome stuff and was upset with her and just went off his rocker. The grandma doesn't make excuses for him and what he did but is very very sad about it and she gets to see him once a week via Skype. He is remorseful but understands he will never get out of jail.

Yep.
I have a family member who is serving a prison term for repeat DUI offenses, not sure for how long but he's in actual prison, not jail, so it's pretty serious. An ex boyfriend was on probation for drug possession (he got busted with a bag of weed in his car during a traffic stop) didn't pay the fine in a timely manner, and had to spend 3 months in county jail. And a few other friends and family members who got arrested for minor offenses but bailed out after a few hours to a few days and weren't ever sentenced to a jail or prison term, just fines and/or probation.
And BTW, visiting somebody in county jail sucks. Many of the guards assume that if you are willing to visit somebody in jail, you're not a good person. I get that the procedures need to be strict and strictly enforced for safety and order. But I had guards say some pretty hateful shit to me when I would visit my ex, and if I tried to stand up for myself I knew they would deny visitation, so I had to shut up and take it.

Yes both prison and jail (two different things) I didn't even realize that! Makes sense now that I think if it. Jail is short term, prison is the real deal.

Yes, two awful people. One was the youth minister at church who molested dozens of children. He's in prison for life. The other is my friend's husband who murdered her after she left him.

Unfortunately yes. DH has a family member that was drunk driving, and the woman who he hit died. He was in prison for about 18 months.

I had a friend from HS and college that I had stopped having contact with go to jail for drunk driving hit and run. He killed an elderly man. I saw his picture on the news, made me so mad and sad. My mom goes to prison once a week to teacher prisoners to quilt, but I don't suppose that counts!

This is our life now. You can't imagine how many people will try to pull the friend card. We know many judges and love it when someone goes in front of them and say I know Jess & Dan. To which the judge says I do to & moves on. Growing up I grew up in a small town probaly only 200 people. Our neighboring town had close to 1000. So we knew many people who went to jail & still keep up with several judges from our hometown and always hear about someone we grew up going to jail.

Yes, I have a friend ( ex friend now) who horribly abused her 8 yr old step daughter ( my DDs then best friend). I had no idea this was going on until it was in the news the day she almost killed her. She is in prison now for 12 yrs. I hope I never see her face again.
