In just a couple of months we'll have our very own Maker space. Complete with electronics, Lego robotics, and a 3-D printer, along with other things. The grant is from the state library association. they are creating 15 Maker libraries across the state and our Head Librarian wrote the best grant proposal. She's super excited and I am too. I expect it to bring the teens back to the library. It's also something that will help instill some excitement and hope in our small town teens. Too many of them don't go on to college or post high school training because their parents didn't and the kids don't know what they would do with a degree anyway. It will be great to bring some STEM excitement to town. I'm our Library Friends Group president and I plan on helping set up the space. Have you been to a Maker Space? What made it great? What do you think will get teens there and excited to use the equipment?

hcplonline.org/innovationlab.phpI work for this library system and our makerspace area has been open for a couple of weeks. I just stopped by yesterday for the tour - it's very cool!

How awesome! I wish our library had that! Tbh it's been my observation that teens at the library like hang out space, they usage the children's room on half days and don't let anyone else sit to read picture books, it's kind of annoying but the teen side is all tables and chairs, they want comfy chairs to lounge in.

What do you think will get teens there and excited to use the equipment? Our high school has 2 3-d printers, scanner and pen. We've ordered a green screen, 2 mini ipads, stands and other camera equipment. We are in the process of ordering sewing equip, installing a darkroom, some metal tools and a million other things. We are a 100 year old high school and have just started revamping our media center. Our maker space is all the buzz. We are getting our funding through grants, almuni, PTSA & our admin. Let me know if you have any questions. We also got our local community College interior design students to come in and do proposals on how to setup the makerspace. Now we are just in the process of voting on one.

Congratulations on the grant! Not sure where you're located, but I would recommend contacting some other libraries who are running successful maker spaces to find out their policies, what works/doesn't work for them, etc. I've visited this one and talked to them, they run a great one: www.peabodylibrary.org/creativitylabGood luck! Congrats to your head librarian and library! That sounds awesome. I remember a thread on the old board that somebody started basically asking with e-books, why do we even bother with libraries anymore. Beyond actual books, this is exactly why. Libraries can be integral parts of the community that provide a number of resources. You can never go wrong with providing extra opportunities for learning and experience. I hope it's a great success with the teens! Do they plan to have scheduled talks, events, etc.? We don't have a Maker Space here, so not sure how it works. Very exciting!

We will have events. Our Librarian wants them and the grant requires it anyway. we'll need to introduce the town to the concept. There are currently no for profit Maker Spaces in the state, so it's likely that most people in our town won't be familiar with them. We are nowhere near the Peabody, but I will share the link with our library. I'm sure the librarian plans to visit other libraries in the state that got the grant last year. She's new to the job (and very excited about it) so she's done a lot of library visits lately and encouraged other librarians to visit us. It makes it easy to get ideas and share what's working when you know each other well.

Our main downtown library just installed a MakerSpace. I heard it on the news and checked out the library's web site to see what all they had. Wow is all I can say! They have: 3Doodler, button makers, sewing machines, audio recording booth, Canon DSLR, laser cutter/engraver, large format vinyl cutter/printer, VHS to digital machine, cassette tape to digital, 3D printer and on and on and on. They had tons of stuff and it looks like they are trying to attract all age groups. They also have a Silhouette Cameo machine!
