I was about 2/3 of the way through walkin' my pup. He usually gets to dictate where we go. He decided he wanted to go down this one street, so we turned the corner. All of a sudden, this bird comes flying up behind me (I could only see his shadow) and hits me in the head while flapping wildly! I start walking a little faster and he comes at me again! So, we run across the street and he followed me. I threw a full poop at him to distract him, but he's still coming at me.
This guy comes walking up the sidewalk towards me and asked what was going on. I told him and he asked if it was because of what was in the bag. I said probably not since it was just dog poop. So, the guy walks past me and starts talking to the bird saying stuff like, "What's wrong, bird? Why are you mad"? (I went back and picked up the bag while he was distracting the bird) Then, I went on my way and I never saw the bird again.
SO weird!

When I lived in Cayman we had these little black birds called ChingChings that would do that when they had eggs/babies in the nest.
It is so freaky when they attack you totally unprovoked!

That reminds me of the episode of the Dick Van Dyke show where Richie keeps getting attacked by a bird. When he went outside he had to wear a pot or a colander or something as a hat. Turned out the bird wanted his hair to make a nest.
I bet you won't be taking that route again anytime soon!

There was probably a nest in one of the trees. I lived in an apt. complex that had a tree right by the front door and my car spot. I had to use an umbrella to get in and out at certain times because of the crazy bird attacks.
Oh and I have to say I LOL's at the throwing of the poop!

It's the time of year where many birds still have babies in nests. You were probably too close to its nest for comfort and it was defending its babies.

We had a robin build a nest under our deck and right around Memorial Day anytime anyone went out on our deck, that damn robin would dive bomb us relentlessly. It got so bad that when I needed to water my containers, I had to use the hose and water to squirt her and that kept her away long enough for me to water. Her babies must have been close to leaving the nest because it was only a couple of weeks and then she was gone.

Sounds like a Mockingbird. They dive bomb the dogs frequently when they have baby birds in their nests. They can be mean other times too but when there are babies, they are especially mean. We have a couple of trees that are right outside of the dog yard and they build nests there every year.

I had that once walking in downtown Sacramento. Passed a bank with a tree in their parking lot. The birds had a nest there. The bank eventually put up a couple warning signs because it was such an ongoing problem for their customers. I just avoided that block for a few months.

This is what I was going to say. In my experience, mockingbirds tend to be pretty aggressive. DH has had one attack him a few times.

I so wish we could see this on video! My bird feeder is right out my kitchen window and is very popular right now. They are very noisy but at least they have enough common bird courtesy to fly away from me instead of in to me when I walk past.

Magpies in Australia are notorious for that. They like dark haired people and go after their hair for nests. Then after the eggs hatch, they dive bomb to protect the nest.
My friend growing up had her eye glasses taken off her face once. They won't attack though if they see eyes, so way back when, people wore baseball caps with eyes painted on the top. Looked rediculous, but it worked.

I'm laughing so hard my sides ache because I have these images in my head. Throwing dog poop at a bird attacking you. (Sorry, I know it was not funny at the time and I, too, would have been afraid.) Richie wearing a pot or colander on his head when going outside. I still think of Alfred Hitchcock's scary movie "The Birds" when I see large flocks of black birds.
