I am trying to do some free-motion quilting and the manual for my machine says to set the presser foot pressure for darning. Sounds simple enough except I can't find a chart, diagram or anything else that indicates what that setting would be. The normal pressure is 4 on my machine and the higher number gives more pressure. I am assuming I want less pressure but I am pretty new to this free-motion thing so I just wanted to be sure.
ETA: I did google but only came up with results that want to sell me parts. I have those, I just don't know how to use them!

I think tension is something you have to fiddle with to get it exact. Does it by chance mean to drop your feed dogs, as you would for darning?

I would leave the presser foot pressure the same and drop your feed dogs. Experiment with that and if needed, reduce the pressure one number at a time.
Some actually free motion without dropping the feed dogs so if you keep having trouble, try it with them up. The darning foot shouldn't go all the way down either way.

You need to lower (or cover) your feed dogs in order to free-motion quilt. The little teeth that pull your fabric forward through underneath the needle will interfere with the free-motion gliding that needs to occur when you're quilting. Usually there is a switch that will drop them below the sewing surface and out of the way. If there isn't you need to cover them by taping a piece of cardstock over them.
Tension is an iffy business. Sometimes you need to adjust; sometimes not. Depends on your machine.
You also need to hook on the darning foot which will allow you to see what you're doing and which will allow the work to glide freely underneath. You will also need to adjust how hard the presser foot smooshes down. You want this adjusted up so there is plenty of clearance between your darning foot and the bulk of your quilt sandwich.

Thanks for the replies. I realized while reading them that I didn't ask my question very well. The feed dogs are lowered (and interesting gale w , I didn't know you could do free motion with them up - going to try that after I finish this project!). The thread tension is fine but it is the presser foot pressure that I am trying to figure out. I have a Husqvarna machine - here is the link to the manual about the presser foot: Presser foot (In case the link doesn't go to the correct page right away, it is page 12 that I am referring to).

My Elna has a specific lever inside the left top door that sets the pressure of the foot. I changed that when I used my Elna to FMQ. That's different than tension.
Not all machines have a door but there is bound to be a way to change the pressure of the foot.

You don't know how to adjust the presser foot pressure or you don't know what to set it at? Page 10 of the manual (page 12 of the pdf) shows you what dial to turn. What setting will depend on the bulk of your specific project. You want it set so that your work glides freely underneath and isn't smooshed or pressed too hard by the darning foot. There isn't a specific setting that works for every project because the loft of batting varies a lot. You want it pretty high off the project.
