Kind of a S/O from the running thread that got me thinking. Does anyone swim with a masters program?
After swimming on my own for about 5 years, my local YMCA brought in a masters program this past fall. I joined thinking maybe I'd go once a week or so to pick up some pointers from the coach but I have surprised myself with my consistency. We train 3x/week for 90 minutes per session, and I have been at every single practice that I haven't been out of town for. There are two programs through our Y, a morning and evening program. I do mornings which is Tues and Thurs at 5:30 a.m. and Sunday at 7:15 a.m. The great thing about it is that I have absolutely nowhere else to be at that hour, so I usually have no problem making it. The bad thing about it is that by about 11 a.m. some days, I am ready for a nap! I need to work on getting to bed earlier.
Just curious about other masters programs, how often they meet, what your typical workout would look like, etc.?

Are you competing? A good friend of mine trains with the master's swim program at her local community center. Most of the participants are competing and she has felt a little pressure to compete but isn't really interested.

I don't, but would like to have courage to make this a goal. I need to relearn strokes. I'd be exhausted trying to swim laps now. One of my kids has started swimming. It's amazing the age range I see coming and going for piol time before or after his practices. I swear one guy is 96. He gets in the water and flies, it must work...

I used to practice with a Masters team for a few years after college and while I was in grad school since I had aged out of collegiate swimming. Then I moved somewhere where there was no masters team and still swam a lot on my own. There is now a masters team in my area, but they practice at 6 am, and after so many years of competitive swimming with practices in the very early am, I no longer enjoy swimming in the morning, plus I have kids to get off to school at 6:30 and 7 am, so it just wouldn't work for me. Maybe some day I'll be able to get back to it. I'd like to swim more and get back into the good shape I was in when I was competing, but I have no interest in competing these days.

Not one in my area, but I think it would be fun to join.

I don't compete, nor do I have any interest in competing. My goal is to become a more efficient swimmer which will help me save my energy for the bike and the run during a triathlon (which I don't compete at, either - I am just there to complete those!) I do love that swimming can be a lifelong sport. There is a woman in the pool with us every morning, not part of the masters club but on her own - she just turned 88 and she is really inspirational.
My area has had a different masters team for a long time that practiced at night and the time just never worked for me with all the kids' activities. I'm lucky that the morning group formed, but we only have about six swimmers who come out consistently. I hope the club has staying power and is around for many years to come!

I am swimming with the Masters Team near me two mornings a week 5:30-6:30am. Then swim Saturday morning on my own due to not wanting to wake up at 4:30am on a Saturday. I am training with them as well to better my swim in my Triathlon. Generally there are about 8-11 master swimmers as well as about 15 high school national team members during that time. This morning we swam 3400 yards.
