Where would you go?
We're trying to decide what to do for vacation this year. We usually go to Oak Island, NC but we're tired of the beach.
Personally, I'd love to do lots of sightseeing, but dh doesn't want to be "driving around all the time". Plus, we don't want to spend a huge amount of money.
I'd like to fly somewhere out West and then rent a car and drive around. Dh would like to go "back to nature". Ds won't care as long as there's wifi at night.

We spent a few days in Savannah last summer and absolutely loved it. It's a gorgeous city, and of course, you could add a couple of beach days on Tybee Island if you wanted a little relaxation. We combined it with a couple of nights in St. Augustine in Florida before driving down to Orlando. Where are you travelling from? There are some places I wouldn't go if it were just for a week, but I'm not sure how far you might want to travel?

Yellowstone National Park if you want to see tons of wildlife (wolves, buffalo, etc.)
I couldn't get past the we're tired of the beach comment! We are headed to Jamaica in March and I am so excited to welcome hot weather and gorgeous water.

We went to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge in September last year and loved it. We spent one day at Dollywood. Cades Cove is nice if your DH wants to get back to nature. And of course, the Great Smoky Mountains National Park is right there, too.
ETA: It's probably a six-hour drive or so from where you are in WV.

New Orleans! Stay directly in town and your DH can stay at the hotel while you explore.

For one vacation, we flew into Los Angeles. We spent a few days along the coast, hitting a few beaches, Queen Mary, Hollywood walk of Fame, etc. We then headed to the Grand Canyon and Sedona. We stayed right next to the Grand Canyon and it was amazing. Sedona was beautiful and we went to Slide Rock State Park. Along the way we hit some interesting sights.
On our way back to CA, we stopped in Vegas for a night. We had our three kids with us, so it was just for them to see the lights, etc.
It was a great vacation.

When in September? If early September, a trip out west would be cool - Yellowstone, Tetons, Glacier, etc. If later September, a trip in New England to catch the start of autumn. I would also consider the southwest parks in September (Moab makes a good base if you don't want to drive too much).

I absolutely totally cannot BELIEVE that no one suggested Boston! I was going off the "back to nature" portion of her post. ;-) But Boston could easily be combined with NH, VT, Maine, etc. to get both sightseeing and some nature. Although staying in Boston isn't exactly a way to avoid spending huge amounts of money (also noted in the OP).

South Dakota. AFter driving there -- don't miss Wall Drug and the Badlands National Park -- base in Rapid City. There are tons of things to do aside from Rushmore. We had a great vacation in South Dakota. Also -- Denver and Colorado Springs. After spending some time in the "big city" we stayed in Colorado Springs -- again, lots of really beautiful things to do and see -- Garden of the Gods, Seven Falls, some big canyon, Pikes Peak .... again a great family vacation.

Asheville, NC. There's the Biltmore Estate, the Blue Ridge Parkway, hiking to waterfalls, relatively close to Gatlinburg/Pigeon Forge and Dollywood, and Asheville itself is a beautiful quaint little town. Love it there. We go camping in the area multiple times over the summer.

Google Asheville List.. it was on a ton of different list.. Framer's even ranked it #1 place to visit in 2015

Responses to above posts....
Early September.
Vacations aren't fun without my dh and ds!
We have family in Massachusetts and California that we visit so those are off the list.
When I was ds' age, I spent a summer with my grandparents driving from here to San Diego and back. It was amazing but dh won't be able to get more than a week off.
I was thinking of flying into Phoenix and getting a rental car - then doing a loop of sites in AZ and Utah (I loved Moab!). I had a massive nosebleed (gotta love that dry heat!) when we tried to go through Monument Valley so I'd love to finally make it past the entrance.
