I would head to San Francisco and either explore north into Napa and the redwoods or south into Monterey/Carmel/Big Sur.
ETA Just saw CA is out. AZ is great but will be pretty hot still in September. If you drive far up through Utah into Park City and the canyon areas you will get color with the changing leaves.

If you want nature I'd stay in monterey or a close by area and go to this state park www.pointlobos.org/There's also Julia pffefer state park and garapada st park, all great for a hike, garapada will be the least crowded as its got more terrain. If you don't want to hike all week you could drive up to the redwood forests or go to SF in the city or even drive down to central California, I love the scenic drive asking the pch.

Responses to above posts.... Early September. Vacations aren't fun without my dh and ds! We have family in Massachusetts and California that we visit so those are off the list. When I was ds' age, I spent a summer with my grandparents driving from here to San Diego and back. It was amazing but dh won't be able to get more than a week off. I was thinking of flying into Phoenix and getting a rental car - then doing a loop of sites in AZ and Utah (I loved Moab!). I had a massive nosebleed (gotta love that dry heat!) when we tried to go through Monument Valley so I'd love to finally make it past the entrance. I love the southwest, so this idea sounds fantastic to me. A popular week long trip is to fly to Vegas and do Bryce Canyon NP, Zion NP, and the north rim of the Grand Canyon. From Phoenix I would consider Sedona, Page, and the south rim of the Grand Canyon. Depends on the amount of driving you want to do and what you want to see. This page is useful for getting overviews of different spots: www.americansouthwest.net/

We flew into vegas one year and went to the grand canyon. Then went back to vegas for a few days and did a utah loop. We visited Bryce National Park, Moab(Arches and Canyonlands national park), and Zions National Park.
We had 2 weeks though. You could fly into vegas and visit one or two of the parks I mentioned.

Except for this year, my answer will always be a cruise. I went on my first one in 2013 and I'm hooked. This year we're going to visit family in Seattle, so no cruise this summer. But I've never been, so it will be plenty of fun, I'm sure.

I was going to say San Fran too until I saw that CA is out.
We went to Mount Desert Island in Maine (where Acadia NP is) in October two years ago and loved it. We could have spent two weeks there. You can take the shuttle bus to explore the park for some of the days. We rented a small cottage in Southwest Harbor. It was one of our best trips ever (and we have been to a lot of nice places).

I'm not going to be much help because I live in the desert (New Mexico) so any beach vacation would be tops on my list. That being said, I would love to one day visit Glacier National Park.

Do you have passports? How about Niagara Falls for a day or two, Niagara on the Lake, and then a loop up to Toronto for a sightseeing tour? DH and I did Niagara Falls for a long weekend two years ago and we were surprised at how much we loved it. I would love to go back and head up to Toronto next time.

One of the most beautiful places on the planet. I was going to suggest flying into Calgary, go to Banff and travel through the mountains to Lake Louise and Jasper.

Santa Fe is a great place to visit. It has historical sites, wonderful museums, fabulous shopping, fantastic restaurants and beautiful scenery. There are lots of outdoor activities just outside of Santa Fe-hiking, river rafting, fly fishing, biking & skiing (though probably not in September).

Your trip to Arizona sounds like a good plan. We went to Sedona, Grand Canyon, monument
valley and Page, Arizona last spring and had a great time.
