I think I asked this quite awhile back on the old 2Ps site. Figured I would ask anew, to bookmark, and get new suggestions.
Looking for an area to vacation at. In the USA. Want it to be on the beach/ocean. Warm in like May/early june. Would like to stay in a VRBO, or resort. Would be my dh, and 2 young adult dd's. Doesn't have to be exciting. We love laid back vacations. Just exploring the area, water, beach, relaxing, good food.
Suggestions???!!! Thanks!

I love Cape Cod and the lower Maine area, but it won't be super warm at that time.

Another vote for Sanibel Island. When we vacationed there we always stayed at Sundial. Great restaurants, beautiful beaches, quiet and laid back. We now live 15 miles away, several beaches around but Sanibel is our go to place. Love it.

I love Cape Cod and the lower Maine area, but it won't be super warm at that time. I love these areas too (although water temperature is definitely an issue of swimming in the ocean is important! but on the plus side might not be as crowded as beaches further south this early in the season). They have such a different feel from the southern beaches. I was in Charleston for the first time over New Year's Eve and thought it was a lovely area and think it would make a great vacation spot.

Anywhere on the Gulf Coast -- we've stayed in South Padre, Gulf Shores and Pensacola Beach ... love the Gulf Coast

Love Sunset Beach, NC. My husband's family has been going there for over 30 years...very small, quaint. About 45 minutes North of Myrtle Beach, SC. It's one of the only beaches that is actually growing because of the way it sits on the ocean.

Did I send you to Hilton head island, SC when you posted previously? It's my happy place.

Hawai'i would be my vote. Maui or Hawai'i sound like good choices for what you want.

We like Ft Myers Beach, FL It's very close to Sanibel, just across the bridge. We have rented a house near the beach, stayed in condos, and enjoyed all of them. The Pink Shell is a nice resort hotel/condo. Sanibel is just across the bridge, maybe a 15 minute drive when the road isn't crowded from the beach. Lots of good shelling in Sanibel, also a nature preserve. In Ft Myers proper you can visit Thomas Edison's summer home and museum. In May there may be something at the theater in the college in Ft Myers.
We used to go for Christmas before my in laws passed away

Another vote for Anna Maria Island in Florida. We also love St Pete Beach. It's obviously a bit bigger, but the beach is never crowded, there are loads of good restaurants, and it's only a ten-minute drive to the stunning beaches of Fort de Soto.

We like Anna Maria Island, FL. Anna Maria/Holmes Beach is one of our go to places. I would say a good 50% of my friends have either a house or a condo there. It is absolutely gorgeous and the beach is the focus rather than the stuff around it. It is close enough to everything that if you get a rainy day, you can head over the bridge to the movies or even for a fuller day, over to the big malls in Tampa. If you want, there are places like Ft. DeSoto nearby, fun restaurants and very family friendly. It is mostly homes, very few hotels. By May/June, the weather is perfect-the water is warmer and the whole experience is perfection on the sand. (The only thing that could be a negative is that it is on the west coast of Florida-that means that the water tends to be warmer than the east coast and the waves can be nonexistent. It is the way I prefer it, but some people prefer the east coast with the waves.)

Seagrove, FL on the Emerald Coast. We went there the third week of May last year and loved it. If you stay at Commodore's Retreat you have access to both the ocean (without having to walk down a bunch of stairs) and a fresh water dune lake. We rented through VBRO and I think there is a rental agency that handles some of the units. You can rent (or bring) bikes and ride down 30A to Seaside for excitement.

We went to Ft. Myers area last year and had the best time. We went to some awesome beaches. Sanibel & Captiva, Ft. Myers, Delnor Wiggins Pass, Barefoot Beach, Lovers Key.

We spent four days in Destin in July. We did practically nothing -- beach all day, went out to eat in the evenings, watched a movie in the condo and then sat on the balcony with a glass of wine. We loved it, and have decided to go back this year. We stayed at the SanDestin Resort.

Coastal SC (Isle of Palms, Kiawah, Edisto). I would add Seabrook Island to this mix. We were there last Sept and it was wonderful. Had an ocean front condo.

WOW! Lots of great suggestions! Did I read somewhere or remember, that the drive out to Sanibel Island is bad traffic wise? That would not be good. My dh does HORRIBLE in bad traffic, and it would ruin the whole start to the vaca.

My dh does HORRIBLE in bad traffic, and it would ruin the whole start to the vaca. We have only done the drive in late February when it is really crowded and it was bad, but not unmanageable. My in-laws live in Naples so we drove over from there. It is a very nice part of FL. Personally, I prefer Hilton Head because you can make day trips to Charleston and Savannah (my favorite city). It is super laid back. Our go to beach town is Ocean City, NJ but the water won't be warm yet at that time of year. It is a quaint family town (dry island, no alcohol for sale on island), boardwalk with smaller rides and shops, great restaurants, and big beaches.

Another vote for Kiawah Island. It is close to Charleston so you can do stuff there too. We had a very relaxing time there. We had a condo in the resort. Not sure what the temperatures usually are at the time you want to go as we went later in the summer.

Bad traffic on Sanibel would be like...having to wait at the traffic light a couple of cycles to get out the parking lot after the movies.

We go to Anna Maria Island. My SIL has a place there and we always stay with her. Close enough to Tampa if you want to do Busch Gardens. But about as laid back as you can get on the island.

San Diego would almost be perfect but not in may/June as we have early morning fog/overcast that burns off by mid day, we call it the may gray or the June gloom. But please come visit us any other time, February tends to have some rain but its sunny here 95% of the days of the year. I believe we're one of the most temperate climates in the world.
