No way. 8 is our first grader's bedtime. His soccer practices are at 5:30 or 6. Games on Saturday mornings. Practice at 8 PM on a weekday is utterly ridiculous, IMO. Even for older kids.

That is too late. Where we live the older kids (middle schoolers) get the later time slots. My 7th grader normally has practice from 8-9:30 p.m.

That is far too late. My 16 year olds summer team practice runs until 10pm on Mondays and that is too late. He leaves practice early, at 930, which is normally the time he goes to bed. He then drives home, has a snack, and gets to bed around 1030. Not a great start to the week. Thankfully, he only has two more weeks before high school season kicks in and those practices are over.

That is too late. My first grader has a 7pm on Friday and that's later than I like. Last season we were 6pm on Thursday and that was perfect.

That is way too late for a first grader. There are usually issues with practice times due to the availability of the field or gym where the practice is being held. My DH was the volunteer athletic director when my kids were in a small k-8 catholic school. Practice times were always hard to juggle. The coaches were all volunteers who for the most part had full time jobs.
My DH did however make sure that the younger kids had the earlier practices. Sometimes because of gym availability the older (7-8 graders) would have to be scheduled for practices that started at 7:30, he never let them start later than that.
I would think whoever is in charge should be able to get the younger kids the earlier practice times.

Uh that would be a no. I honestly don't know that I would allow my middle schoolers to have a weekly practice that starts at 8. Realistically they wouldn't be in bed until 10 when you consider drive time, clean up etc.

This questions wasn't directed to me, but for every league that I have experience with (soccer, basketball, and baseball), yes, kids 1st grade and under are limited by league rules to one practice a week.

Why would you have a kid that young in a sport that required practice anyway? Too bad kids just can't be kids.

Way too late. Our practices start between 3:30 and 5:00. Yes, the early starts were one of (the many) reasons I quit my last job and now work part-time. No way would I have either of my kids (ages 7 and 11) going to an 8pm practice. They'd have to quit that team. Not only would that be too late for my boys (they wouldn't be able to function the next day), but it would be too late for me too. I go to bed between 8:30 - 9:00.

Wow that is late for a first grader. That would mean he probably wouldn't get to sleep until 10!
I would seriously question a coach who would be ok with accepting that time for children that young regardless of what the league guy says. Pick a different day, do something!!

My kid would not be playing.
That is too late for even high school. There is no way to practice, come home, wind down, shower, and get to bed at a decent hour.
School is more important than sports.

Way too late. Both of our practices start at 6 (rugby and baseball). Even then it's home and in the shower and to bed, no messing around.

Oh gosh, watching a bunch of little kids practice soccer is one of the funnier things you can watch. It is like trying to herd kittens. Practice doesn't have to be WORK, and with the younger kids it really can't be or you lose them fast. Practice can both teach skills and be fun at the same time and good coach knows that. Honestly, in the U6 age group, good coaches aren't even really about winning, but teaching the kids how to love the game and teaching them the basic stuff. But not at a start time of 8 pm.

Yeah, I am not exactly Joe Sports here, and I don't think of first-grade sports practice as soul-deadening. My older kids at that age wanted to play and practice -- they got to see friends, and it was fun. Well, for them. I can't say I was terribly sad when they decided to stop offering me the weekly opportunity to stand outside in the drizzle .

Yes it is! They all want to KICK THAT BALL!
I guess I was thinking back to my kids at that age. They did have a couple practices on a Saturday morning (might have been just one) and then just the games on Saturday morning. Not a huge time commitment. Practice on a week night for a first grader seems nuts! LOL To me anyway.

Our youth baseball team has practice and games during the week that late. Every age group has to take their turns with the times. With only 2 fields and so many teams. Parents know this going into the league with their little ones. It's only 8 weeks out of the year as well.

Practice on a week night for a first grader seems nuts! LOL To me anyway. I think things must have changed a lot since then. Organized sports, with once a week practices, start at age 3 here. Some sports, like soccer, start official practice at 18 months (with companies like SoccerTots). By 1st grade it is no longer herding kittens. It is full on competitive score keeping, pay an official referee (an adult who makes $17/hr), play by the official rules real game. Select teams (the kind you have to try out to be on the team and pay a huge amount of $$ for) start in 1st grade. Those kids absolutely know exactly what they're doing. They've been playing for 4 years already.

Well there's the obvious thing that others have already mentioned - it's for teaching the kids the necessary skills to play the game properly. But also, for my son it's almost as much fun as playing the actual games. Basketball training is a chore (he doesn't want to play any more but he has to finish out the season), but he LOVES going to cricket and football training. He gets to hang out with his mates playing and learning sports that he loves. You know, just being a kid!

Possibly. My oldest is about out of High School. They all participated in sports starting at about age 5, but the "practice" part really wasn't too intense. One or two Saturday morning practices and then Saturday morning games. About 5th grade the "real" thing started up more with some AAU sports. Those usually had a once a week practice and the Saturday events were longer.
I always felt kind of bad for the kid that was pushed so hard by parents with a year round schedule on a sport - only to get completely shut out by high school by kids that were just better by nature. It was sad to see. I had a couple "jocks" and a couple that ... were ... not. LOL! I was happy with whatever they did though. I refused to put them in a bunch of stuff at a really young age. We had plenty of fun things to do without scheduling every minute of every day. I feel fortunate that we live in an area that they could do that though. It's not always the case. They had ponies and horses and all kinds of fun on the farm.
Do you think there is any "pick up" games anymore? Do kids just go down to the park and play a game of ball? It's sad if it doesn't happen. Those were good times!

First it was two nights per week for an hour. 4th-6th grade, two to three nights per week for an hour and a half to two hours. Middle school and high school have every night practice. Baseball is typically 3 practices a week with two nights of games. It is exhausting.

One of my first grade twins is in hockey. Most weeks they have Tuesday and Saturday practice and Sunday games. We've only made it to two Tuesday practices. Most start between 6 and 7. I font even like 5:30 practice since that means we are getting ready by 5pm and home by 7 and we have to be sleeping by 8:00. We've decided it's just too late for our family. Next year he starts Mites (jr mites now) and we might have to negotiate more, but not in first grade. Side note: we had an 8 am game today with -29 windchill on a long holiday weekend. We had seven out of 13 kids show up on my guys' team. A different team had to loan out a couple kids because one of the other teams only had three show up.

WAY too late and no you are not off to be hacked off, I would be too.
I have a HS student that doesn't have practice that starts that late for crying out loud.
Coach said that was the only time available? He's wrong because that time is not available or an option for that age group.

8 p.m. would be too late a start for me, can't imagine for a 1st grader. Not only do little ones go to bed early at that age, they're also hopped up with adrenaline after running around, and then need to take a bath. I wouldn't be happy.

That's if practice is only an hour, your commute is 5 minutes and you can wrestle a hyped up 7 yr. old thru a shower quickly. I agree - waaay too late. Unless, like someone else said, it's hockey. Forget normal hockey practice times.
