Am I wrong to be hacked off that my first grader's practice time is 8:00 pm on Thursday nights? For me, that is way too late. He goes to bed at 8:00! All his big tests are on Fridays and he doesn't do well on less sleep. Ug!

Wow.
Yea, my second grader's bedtime is 7:30.
When we coach soccer practice starts at 5:00.

Heck yeah. I'm mildly annoyed that my 7th grader's practice doesn't end till 8:15. I would not be happy with an 8:00 practice at any age, but especially that young.

My kids never would have made it that late. They were in bed by 8 and they definitely needed the rest. I would not be happy either with that practice time.

Both my kids have always had practice starting at 6:00, never knew so late was even an option! I'm hoping it was a typo, but so far he hasn't reponded to me when I questioned the start time.

When DS was in first grade, he played baseball. I asked for practice and game times before signing him up, but they said it was yet to be determined. It turned out that they had double headers on Tuesday nights. First game at 7pm, second game after the first. School started at 8 am. I let him play the first game, but never the second. We were known as That Yankee Family. So be it. A 6 year old doesn't need to be out until 11 pm on a school night.

Our school starts early, 7:30, but I'm a teacher at their school, so we are usually there by 7:00. My boys get up at 6:00 each morning.

My now teens have played on many teams and never had a start time of 8:00 in elementary school. That's too late.

Way too late!! I would be asking questions, sharing my opinion, and then seeking a team change. When my DSs were in first grade their bedtime was 7:30.

In first grade, my kids went to bed at 7:30. I don't think I would be happy at all with an 8pm start time. My youngest doesn't even like to be up past 10-10:30 at 16. He was my kid who likes to sleep and in first grade, he wouldn't have been able to stay awake the whole practice. I am pretty sure we would have had to bow out of that season if all the practices were that late.

That's way too late for a 1st grader. Mine were in bed by 7:30 at that age. I remember being surprised when we had 7:30 practice times, thinking that was a late start, but the kids were much older (6ht/7th grade).

Our league assigns practice times to teams, so I know it's not the coach's fault, but if he confirms the time, I will be calling the league to complain.

I think it is too late too. I will say that at least around here, what happens is that we are penned in on the one side by the very late elementary school release times (kids taking the bus home aren't usually home until 4:30) and in the middle by the fact that the more "advanced" teams get the prime 6:00 type spots. I know a lot of our coaches had to really battle not to have 7:30 and 8:00 start times (and it probably just meant some less battle-y coach's team got that spot). Hopefully you can get it moved.

My kid wouldn't be going.

I would think a mistake has been made and hopefully when the coach tries to confirm they will correct it. I have had two kids go through practices for years and we have never had a practice that started at 8pm. That's way too late for a first grader.

He has spelling, reading, word wall, and phonemes tests on Friday. He is a very young 1st grader, so it takes hard work for him to do well.

that's crazy. There is no way my children would have been playing on that team - they were in bed by 7:30 at the latest until they were about 8.
Two of my kids play hockey. Ice time is always at a premium, but ice time is usually allocated by age group. My dd is now a peewee (11-13 year olds - same designation in USA and Canda) and she will occasionally have a practice that starts at 7:50 and I hate it.
Generally the ice is allocated as follows, but there are exceptions and figure skating practices to fit around this:
immediate after school hours - learn to skate lessons 5-6 - Mites (Novice in Canada - 7 and 8 year-olds)) 6:10-7:10 - Squirts (Atoms in Canada 9 and 10 year-olds) 7:20-8:20 - PeeWees - 11-13 year-olds 8:30 and later - Bantams (14 &15) and High Schools 10:30 and later - adult leagues
Practice is almost always an hour and there is a 10 minute break between the end of one practice and the beginning of another so they can zamboni the ice. You know from the beginning in this sport that practices will get progressively later as your child gets older and as much as I hate when my dd doesn't get home until 9pm I understand why and better the kids her age than the much younger kids.

Well heard back from the coach. That was the only time he could get. He said it will change once the season starts, but that's still 6 weeks away. I will be calling the league on commissioner on Monday.

That is definitely too late. My limit for starting practice would be 3 or 4. 3 or 4? Most kids are still in school then and if it is baseball, that is in the heat of the day and isn't good for them. OP, is practice starting at 8? I'd have a problem with it at that age. We've had many practices that end at 8, 8:30 or 9, but we usually start by about 6 or 6:30/ Hockey is a different story, there is not enough ice for practice and games, so their practice times are really wonky.

That is too late for a first grader. When my kids were in elementary school, they were on roller hockey teams that played as late as midnight and then had to be back again for a 6:30 a.m. game. Those were weekend games though.

When my kids were in Year 1 their bedtime was 7:30pm, so they would not be attending that particular sports practice. I don't think I'd let my son now, in Year 5, go to practice that late.

Also, who is coaching these teams? I can't fathom that it would work.

This was just community AYSO soccer, not club soccer or private sports.
