I haven't worn a bathing suit in about six years.
If I go to the beach, I feel more comfortable in shorts and tee, or a lightweight dress.
I don't go to pools (haven't in six years).
I don't know if I'm avoiding buying a bathing suit because I don't often go to places where I'd need one, or if I'm avoiding going to places where I'd need one because I don't like my body and therefore haven't bought a bathing suit.
What about you?
ETA: I wish online retailers of bathing suits would show the same suit on different shapes of bodies in the same size. I would love to see an apple body and a pear body, etc. All I ever see is very flat tummied, big busted women, who do technically wear that larger size.
But I can guarantee you that I don't hold my weight like they do, and the suit will look completely different on me then it does on them.

We are going to the Caribbean in a few days on a cruise. We go every year so I usually buy at least one piece of swim wear each trip.
I prefer bottoms--usually a mini skirt w built-in bottoms from Lands End. Usually black or navy. I also have a pair of swim shorts.
I have several top pieces...found a cute black and white halter tankini top at Target yesterday that I really like. The straps are adjustable and there's underwire for much-needed support.
My body is far from perfect (I'm 42) but after several cruises I have just decided to be ok with it and have a good time anyway. There's always someone around with a rock in' body and always someone around who is more ample than me. Don't overthink.

I usually buy at least a couple of new suits every year because I swim almost every day during the summer and we also go to the lake a lot during the summer.
I just ordered a swim dress from Land's End that had excellent reviews. I like to buy swim suits from Land's End not only because they are usually very good quality, but also because they post customer reviews and I can read those reviews and see if the suit is working for people w/ my body type.

Try Land's End - they have some shorts w/ built-in suit/liner/whatever you'd call it that I really like. They also have a "fit predictor" you can use to help you determine size, if that helps.

I buy new ones every couple of years. I go to local shops and buy brands I know. 99% of what i buy is seafolly. I stick to a fold over bottom in black that holds everything in and I buy many tops. I buy seafolly because they have underwire. I try to minimize where my tummy is and show off my chest, and I find underwire tops by seafolly the most flattering. We were just away and I bought two new tops for the trip. Both seafolly. Both underwire. Both had a removable neck strap so I was able to go strapless. This is the first time I've done this and I adored the feel and the look.
I was in the US over Xmas and went to a chain bathing suite shop in the mall. Forget what it was called. They had a different brand with underwire that I really liked. A bit less expensive than seafolly. Really nice.

I buy anywhere from 3 to 6 new suits every year, all from Land's End. I love their fit and quality. I always buy on sale and usually on clearance. If you watch them, you can always find good deals. We have a pool and go on at least one, usually two, cruises every year so my suits get worn. A lot. I am in the pool daily both for pleasure and exercise. I am 53. I quit caring about what I looked like in a swimsuit years ago. I started buying from LE after my mastectomy and yes, I had body issues!! Nothing like only having one boob to bring on some serious body issues!! lol But I have had reconstruction now and I just don't care anymore even though I am all put back together. Some of my suits show some scars. Who cares? Not me!! Buy a suit!! Have fun!!

So last summer, at the beach, I had a discussion with my mom about how self-conscious I was about wearing a bathing suit. Where I live, and the life style I live (beach, pool, lake...whatever body water I can find, I am in it) it isn't really an option to not have a suit to swim in. We were sitting on the beach with every kind and size of body you can imagine wearing swimsuits from full coverage to tiny bikinis-and not always on the bodies you would think.
It occurred to me that I don't stand out one way or another and I should just stop worrying and start having more fun. My family loves me and that was really all that counted at that moment.
In fact, I resolved that this year, I am going to cover up a little less. I always buy from lands end, the swim mini bottoms-I love the coverage-not butt shining going on. But this year? I am NOT going to buy my usual tankini top, but a halterish top. I am going to do it regardless of what *I* think that every one else thinks...I am going to do it because I want to. Fluffiness and all.
I love lands end. Their suits last forever.

Ordered one from Lands End yesterday. I love their swim tees and also got a pair of swim shorts. I went on vacation last year and wore these to swim in. The swim tees are awesome! They look great and dry quickly. Yesterday they had 25% off on their website.

Well I swim all week long so I do have about 3 suits I trade out, but I do have one brand-new one that I only wore once last summer. I buy mine on-line. Lands End is pretty good. I don't wear a two piece anymore unless it's a tankini style. The miracle suit types are great for helping hold in and trim your body so that is my leisure type suit.
Honestly I used to care what people thought but as long as I keep things modest I can't help the way I look..in those words of Arthur from The King of Queens show.."it's called gravity and it's coming for you" so while I am not 20 or even 30 or even 40 anymore..I think a tasteful suit is fine for any body type. Enjoy life while you can.

I have three one pieces that I alternate. This year, I want to buy a 2-piece. My goal is to feel more comfortable, more confident in one like I did almost 20 years ago. I've lost 8lbs so far and if I keep this trend up, I'll be down close to 15lbs by the time swimsuit weather rolls around. Although the way this winter is shaping up, it might be longer!

I usually buy 1 every year as we have a pool and live on the lake, so I am in water at least once a day. I have been buying mine at Sams club. I love the boy shorts with the pantie in them. The tank is long enough for me as well. I think the quality is good and they are very inexpensive, I think this years was around $29.00..
Edited to add that I am 54 years old (how did that happen???) and so everything has kinda gone south. These suits are pretty flattering with what they have to work with! LOL!

I buy 2-3 per year and always need them altered which adds to the cost. I should probably just get a breast reduction. I do get all the alteration costs back in Nordstrom Notes though.
I love Fantasie, Panache, and Freya and order online from FigLeaves generally. I have a Lands End swim shirt too. They are great for sun protection.
Headed to Jamaica tomorrow!

I buy a new swim suit every other year or so. I have three now (2 Target and one Marshalls). We spend a good amount of time at the pool or at the beach, but most of the time I don't go in the water and just hang out on the side with my bathing suit and coverup on. I shouldn't be so self conscious, I work out a lot and am in pretty good shape. :/ I'm super super pale and burn so easily, I prefer to be more covered up. I am definitely going to check out Lands End now after reading this threaD! I'd like a pair of swim shorts this year.

I hate hate hate swim skirts because they float around and get in the way. I wear a tank for swimming laps or a basic tankini for hanging out at the pool or the water park.
I like Jantzen, Speedo, or Lands End. I have a new LE on order. My black speedo tank bit the dust end of last summer.
I keep three suits in rotation because we have a community pool and swim often, and then my DD and I frequent area water parks.
I have fat legs and skirts or shorts don't hide that. It takes a lot more than a wee piece of fabric.

I've lost 90 lbs or so since last summer, so I'm definitely going to need new swimwear. I usually go for a one-piece or tankini/short/skirt deal, but I think I may go for less coverage this go-round. Of course, that also means I'll need to hit a tanning bed or the back yard before my first beach trip so I don't roast myself where the sun hasn't hit in years. I just got my son a gym membership and I'm thinking of adding myself onto that too so I can get some exercise/toning in before the season (I have free access to the rec center at work but I don't live close enough to work for it to be feasible without having to come in really early or stay even later than I usually do).

Not sure. I have several in various sizes. I can fit into the small ones again but I don't know that I want to wear them any more. I want a classy suit that's age-appropriate but not matronly. If I find one, I'll probably buy it, but I don't have much need for a suit since I'm rarely in the water.

I'll need a new one this year after some more weight loss. I usually buy mine from Land's End too. They have wonderful choices (underwire and tops with D and DD cups for those of us who need them), and I've been very pleased with the fit and quality of the suits I've had in the past.
As I've gotten older I've learned to not care what other people think (other than my family). Seriously, those people are strangers-why give two hoots what they think? And another thing-they are probably more caught up with how they look to even glance over at you and concern themselves with how you look. Life is short-don't hide under a cover up or stay out of the water! People come in all shapes and sizes and there are bathing suits to fit everyone.

I'm probably going to need a new suit this year. I lost some weight, so I think it's time. I like tankinis, but I've been having a hard time finding bottoms that have a higher waist and aren't skirted.

Yes, and much to the likely disapproval of some I'll be getting a bikini I have realised/decided that actually I look better in a bikini than a one piece. I have a bit of mummy tummy but I do have a waist and a reasonable bust too and my tummy is less obvious somehow than when it's supposedly disguised and encased in fabric. I've decided I don't look too bad for 50+ I'm not really shy about my body/figure anyway.

I'll need to buy a new suit this summer also - the tankini I bought last spring was too big by mid-summer and the tankini from pre-Annabelle which I finally fit back into was getting loose by summer's end.
I like skirted tankinis personally - black on the bottom and then add colour on the top. I prefer to buy from places where you buy each piece separately because I'm a smaller size on the bottom than on top. Tankinis work better for my long torso and are just easier to get in/out of.

Lol I bought one when I was pregnant in anticipation of being able to wear it because it was half price. I love the site unique vintage for suits because they offer suits with more coverage that are pin up style, so think ester Williams or Marilyn Monroe. I also ordered shorts and shirts without being able to try them on yet, hopefully they all fit!

I usually buy at least a couple of suits every year. Most of them come from Land's End. I LOVE the skirted bottom but I don't like a long skirt that gets in the way. I prefer the swim mimi (I think that is what it is called). I have a couple of bottoms in black and then I buy multiple tops to mix and match. Occasionally, I will buy a full suit in a pretty color but I am finding that for some reason, the tops in the pretty colors like the pinks and lime greens tend to fade.

I buy a few each year as we have a pool. I bought 3 from Swimsuits for All this year and love them all. They have a huge range for all shapes and sizes. As I was buying them in our Summer, your Winter I got super specials and they only took about 10 days to arrive from the US.

The swim mini is the perfect length, and for those of us who are petites, their bathsuits come in a petite also (almost all of them.) For those of you guys who prefer a regular bottom but with a higher waist, they have those too.

I usually buy 1-2 a year on clearance and use them the following year. Lands End is my favourite. I also buy Speedo performance suits to swim through the winter with my master's team.
It makes me sad when people think they can't wear a swim suit, or a particular kind of suit. The beach is one place where everyone should be able to feel the sun and water on their skin free of judgment. It shouldn't be about flattery or appropriateness. If you are fat... We know that you are fat, whether you are in a two piece or one piece or shorts or whatever. Don't worry about what you look like. Worry about how you feel.

I bought two last year for our trip to Costa Rica. I got them (and all of my bathing suits for probably the last 10 years) from Lands End. Their quality is fantastic (they last YEARS) and they have different cuts and sizes for most pieces. Plus I think they do help you see which suits would work best with different body types. This year, no vacation. No need for new suits.

I bought three at the end of season last year. I wear bikinis because they are the easiest to deal with under my wetsuit.
I don't buy anything online that I haven't already tried in a store first
