This isn't meant as a controversial thread. Just one out of curiosity.
Have you ever tried smoking? Why or why not?
To answer my own questions:
I haven't, not even as a teenager.
And the why not of it? Want truth? Because I was afraid I wouldn't know how to do it right, and would choke and cough in front of "cool" kids and embarrass myself even more than I usually did as an overweight, dorky kid.
Now as an adult I'm glad I never did try, but my future health wasn't on my mind when I was a teen and choosing not to smoke.

Tried it; as a high school senior. Didn't like it. My parents were smokers at the time but I hid it from them. I wanted to be cool. It wasn't. I'm glad I didn't get hooked like they did. Smoking killed my Dad. My Mom luckily quit when I was in my 20's.

No. Never tried them. Didn't see the point, thought it was a waste of time/money and thought my friends were idiots for smoking. Not to mention, their smoke made me sick. People tried to pressure me to smoke and be "cool" but I never fell for that nonsense.

Yes, I did try smoking. Not in high school--I was too scared of my mom. Also, my dad was a heavy smoker, and I spent my childhood always smelling smoke, breathing smoke. Car trips were AWFUL as we were cooped up in the car with him smoking to the point where my eyes watered and my nose burned. For some stupid reason, I did try smoking when I was in college. I had a new group of friends who smoked, and I tried it. I hated it, and didn't "get" the appeal of it AT ALL. I think I smoked maybe 3 times total. I'm so glad I didn't like it as I have seen firsthand what smoking has done to so many members of my family. My dad did quit 17 years ago at the age of 54, and had a heart attack and triple bypass surgery just a few months later. He has never smoked again. I have an aunt who is only 57, has emphysema and is on oxygen almost all the time. 57. Six years older than I am. (My parents had me young). She is in poor health otherwise too, and will probably not live to see her grandchildren grow up.
Thankfully, none of my children smoke. I don't know why, but maybe because they didn't grow up with parents/grandparents who smoke. (My dad quit when they were quite young, and their other set of grandparents don't smoke).
I think smoking is so nasty. I don't really know anyone who smokes, at least not around me, so when I am around it...boy, it's tough. I can't hardly stand it for more than a few minutes. I will also say that as I am getting older, I do wonder/worry about how growing up with a chain smoker will impact my health.

No I haven't. I think the reason is because when I was a kid I had bad asthma. My mom smoked since she was 12 and I remember my asthma Dr telling my mom she HAS to stop smoking in the car/home with me because its hurting me. We walked out of the Dr office and got in the car she lit up. She never changed her habit of smoking in enclosed spaces with me. Also growing up and having that smell on your clothes with you go to school and kids making comments sucks.
But oddly enough I have smoked pot back in the day and never thought it was a huge issue lol go figure.

nope, never tried cigarettes as a kid, or as an adult. Why not? Never wanted to, is all. I'm not really sure why I didn't, though; my dad smoked cigarettes when I was really little and a pipe when I was older, and I grew up in the 1970s / 80s when teachers could still smoke in the teacher's lounge at school. I dislike the smell of cigarette smoke hanging on someone, and stale smoke in a house, in someone's clothes, etc. --> yuck!
I do, however, like the smell of cigar smoke and pipe smoke. The smell of pipe smoke is nostalgic for me, and my BF smokes {good} cigars on occasion (always on the patio- he hates the smell of stale smoke, too), and the cigar smoke is very aromatic and pleasant.
I tried one of my BF's cigars once but I obviously did something wrong, because all I thought was 'this tastes like wet leaves' and it wasn't doing anything for me.

Never tried tobacco cigarettes. Never. Growing up, my parents were both almost rabid with their anti-smoking feelings, and I was terrified of doing anything they wouldn't approve of. But I just never saw the appeal anyway and thought it was gross.
I did try marijuana cigarettes a couple of times (when I was MUCH older). Took me a few times to not feel like I would choke to death. Never felt an affect at all. Whatever.

Nope.. never have and never will.. in my 40's now so quite sure I will not change my mind lol
Why.... honestly it stinks and when I saw someone smoking it repulsed me and I always thought the person was trying to hard to look cool (especially when I was younger).

I started "sneaking" cigarettes when I was probably 12 or so. (edited to add...probably about the same time we'd drink peppermint schnapps on the way to school...while wearing our safety patrol belts LOL)
I started smoking on a regular basis at the age of 15. It was quite easy for me...I didn't even have to buy my own cigarettes.
In high school, there was a designated smoking area, and as long as you had parental permission (and the school knew who had parental permission...paperwork needed to be signed) you were allowed to smoke on campus.
I smoked more than a pack a day for a little more than 10 yrs. I quit cold turkey when I learned I was pregnant...nearly 22 yrs ago now.

No, I've never tried it. The reasons are that I didn't hang out with kids that smoked and that the smell of cigarette smoke makes me sick to my stomach (my mother smoked when I was very little). So I never really had any interest in it.

I smoked probably half a dozen cigarettes in high school. To be cool, and because everyone else was doing it. I never did like it and eventually stopped.
Today, I am so so thankful that I quit before I got hooked on it.

Never because it is a disgusting habit and inhaling my parents second hand smoke growing up totally grossed me out. It stinks and when I see someone smoking it looks so unattractive ugh. My hubby smoked occasionally and thankfully quit, it was a real bone of contention between us and now he looks back at smoking and cringes he thinks it is disgusting too lol.

Yes, I tried smoking cigarettes. Both my parents smoked and I lived in a place where most people smoked starting in their teens and I thought it was just something you did. I never liked cigarettes much. I liked Djarums because they tasted good. But it never became a habit. I doubt I smoked a whole pack in my whole life. I plead the fifth on other kinds of cigarettes. it was college after all... My DH and I are both non-smokers now - I don't think he ever tried it. I didn't have to "quit" because it was not really something I did a lot of. Today I just can't stand the smell so it's not really a temptation.

Tried once with a group of kids in junior high. I didn't get it - the hang of it, the inhaling or the enjoyment. Smoking was very popular in my area, the high school even had a smoke shack across the street.

Hi, my name is Rainangel and I am a smoker. I don't smoke anymore, but I still consider myself a smoker. I have smoked on and off since my teens, but it's been a while now, a few years I think. But I know that if I have one cigarette I will be back to 10 a day immediatly. It's an addiction you never really get rid of. At least not for me. The addiction is sort of in my blood now, and I am very conscious about situations that have a higher risk for me to start up. I have never been addicted to drugs or alchol, but from what I can gather about those addictions, my addiction to cigarettes is similar. The cravings and the wanting never truly goes away. It gets easier of course, but it never goes away. So yes, I have tried it, I consider myself a smoker, but one that hasn't actually smoked for a long time

I have never tried them. Never had a desire to try them.
Primary Reasons: a) Bad for you b) Smell awful c) Expensive

Yes, I am a former smoker. Why did I try them? Probably because my brothers did and if they did something, I had to do it too. I always wanted to keep up with my big brothers. One brother never really started. Funny thing is, he is the one that gave me my first cigarette. My other brother used to smoke too. I have been smoke free since Feb. 21, 1986.

Never tried. I was only ever offered a cigarette once at about 15 and said I no because I just didn't fancy it. It's never come up again and obviously I've never had the inclination to try it, for which I'm glad.

I've taken two puffs. Both from my mother's cigarette as a child/young teen. She said it was to make sure I never smoked. I wouldn't do it, but her method worked. I choked and gagged so much I never had a desire to try it again after the last time. My curiousity was satisfied. Satisfied that it was disgusting! I've been disgusted by the smell of them since. I can't stand even being in my car and smelling someone in front of me in a drive thru line etc. Even with the windows closed, I can smell it through the vents or something.
ETA-she didn't make me do it. I asked what it was like and she told me to take a puff and see what I thought. Then told me she hoped by my choking and gagging that I would realize it was a bad habit to start.

I have never been a habitual smoker. For whatever reason, I was able to smoke casually and never become addicted. The last time I smoked was when I went to Paris about 13 years ago, before I started trying to get pregnant. Having said that, if I could smoke one cigarette a week, like Gwyneth Paltrow , without my husband going apeshit, I'd totally do it.

No, I have never tried smoking.
My mother was one of six kids. Both her parents and four of the six kids smoked, only my mom and her youngest brother did not. I hated family gatherings held at my grandparents' house because everyone smoked in the house. I had a hard time breathing when you'd get everyone lighting up -- spouses of the smokers also smoked and Grandma's BFF often came by and she smoked, too. That's a lot of smoke in a smallish house. It was miserable. I'd go home stinking of smoke and woke up the next morning with the ickiest sinuses. It turned me off the idea of smoking very early on.

I never tried it. My mom smoked and I can remember riding in the car in a cloud of smoke and feeling like I was choking to death. That put me off smoking. None of the kids I hung out with smoked in high school.
I can remember when teachers could smoke in the class room between classes. My 7th grade math teacher smoked in the classroom between classes. It was horrible. I was so glad that they banned smoking in classrooms the next summer. She taught 8th grade math too. So I was spared the next year.

Yes. As an adult & didn't care much for the taste or the smell. I do love a good cigar once in a while! I like the taste of a nice cigar & the smell. But, like I said, it doesn't happen very often, (it's been well over 2 years). Never tried pot.

I have a vague recollection of maybe trying a puff or two with a girlfriend when I was really young, but never even considered becoming a smoker. Neither of my parents smoked (my father was a pipe smoker) and it just wasn't something the crowd I hung out with did. In fact, I have very few friends now who do. I definitely prefer to NOT be around it.

I smoked in junior high from about 12 to 14. At that time I could pick up smokes at the store for my mom and they never asked any questions. Then I started smoking at 18 ( when you had to be 18 to buy cigarettes) and I continued until I was 22 when I decided I wanted to have a child. Since then I have smoked socially about a dozen times. it's probably been 3 years or since so my last single cigarette.

No, I never have.
I had a health teacher who had a smoking "machine" that was essentially a jar, a bunch of tubes, and a way to get the smoke to go through the tubes, into the jar, and back out again. The jar represented a person's lungs. She had the smoking gadget smoke one cigarette per class period. By the end of the week, she showed us how much crud was in the jar, mostly tar. It was gross and disgusting, but it was something I never forgot. The idea of having those substances accumulate in my lungs was something that made me certain I never wanted to smoke.
The fact that cigarette smoke stinks, and yellows your teeth also repelled me.
Since none of my family or friends smoked, I never really had any incentive to try them, either.
Now that I have a lot of asthma issues, I am even more glad I never took up the habit. I would be a lot worse off.

No, I have never tried one. My grandparents smoked but never in the house. I was the first grandchild and the only granddaughter and my grandpa was my world when I was a little girl and I was his. He apparently quit smoking the day I was born. He was later diagnosed with heart disease and emphysema and I remember him telling me to never smoke because he would be heartbroken if I ended up like him. I was about 7 or 8 at the time. He passed away when I was 9. My grandmother quit smoking the day of his funeral and never looked back. He had heart problems that I think were not totally related to his smoking but I know they did help. As a teen I had opportunity to try but then I was self-conscious that I wouldn't do it right or would end up choking and making a fool of myself so I never tried. Even now as an adult I just do not have the desire. I also cannot stand the smell. Many kudos to those of you that have quit, are in the process, or are working towards it! I do believe it is an addiction and I applaud you for your hard work

I love a few cigarettes with a cold beer or three on a warm summer evening, much like some men love a cigar and a good brandy. But I know most people can't just smoke occasionally, because it's addictive. I've always been able to do this. I haven't smoked since the end of October, when I went on vacation and had a few beers after a long and tiring plane and car ride.
I am not apologizing for it.
