*Update** We just finished week 2, and she's loving it. My previously "I hate PE because it makes me sweat" child ran a mile plus on Wednesday! She's excited and energized by the program, and can't wait to go. Thanks so much for your positive words on this, we will absolutely be doing it in the future. Have any of your girls participated? It looks like a fantastic program, but man it was expensive. DD starts on Monday. I was honestly surprised she wanted to do it as she's not usually athletically inclined. I'm nervous we're getting ourselves into a you finish what you start situation, but it's bound to happen sooner or later. If you have done it, did you feel your girls got something out of it? What did your funds go toward? ETA the link to the national site: Girls on the run

Yes, my youngest has done it the past 3 years and will do it for the next 3 in middle school. She loved it, she loved the weekley lessons, the chance to talk with others students and teachers about girl issues and the camaraderie of being on a team. Plus her dad runs it with her every year and it's a big deal. Also its a wonderful way to get her involoved on a running program.

It makes me wish I had a daughter to enroll in one! You can still run with them when they have their bi-annual events, sign up to be a volunteer to run with one of the girls.

I will see if I can work it in - with my boys, I am limited in the volunteer hours I can do outside of school hours. I do all my running while the boys are in school, or when my husband is home to watch them.

What did your funds go toward? ETA the link to the national site: Girls on the runI've been a GOTR coach for five seasons now, it's fantastic. It's about so much more than the running. All abilities of running are welcomed - GOTR is about running the right pace for YOU! We always tell our girls it's ok to walk, run, skip, hop, leap, cartwheel, as long as they keep moving forward. I'm not by any means a great runner either. I don't know what the cost is in your area (my region is $150 for a ten week program) but I assure you, every penny of that is going right to the girls - funding the race, girls gifts, seasons t-shirts, lap counters, poster board and markers for lessons, etc. No girl will be turned away because of financial issues - there are usually lots of scholarships available. I can't say enough good things about this program. I have seen so many girls grow and learn how to deal with all the challenges life throws at them through GOTR. I got involved by being a running buddy/assistant coach in 2013 and haven't looked back since. GOTR 5Ks are super fun. Crazy hair, lots of cheering and a whole bunch of girls, running because they love themselves, their friends and this program. Another great running program to get involved with is Back On My Feet. That group runs with homeless shelters and uses running as part of helping victims of homelessness get jobs, get their lives in order, etc.

Our girls are in their 3rd season. It is only $60, but I'll bet they must have some sort of grant since my school has a lot of free and reduced lunches. I ran with them last year and the girls loved it.

Thanks for the additional info. I'm getting excited for her. Our fee was 135, with little to no info on the flyer about what it would be put toward. Yes, there was info about scholarships but we didn't meet the qualifications. We got her grandparents to kick in for part of the fee as a birthday gift.

It is a fantastic program, and as others have said it is more than just running, at our school the girls did small community activities (they left flowers on neighbors doors with homemade cards one week), they work on self esteem, they emphasize kindness and standing up for others, etc. It is an amazing program and I think any girl would be lucky to be part of it!

My older daughter did it last year and what a confidence booster it was for her!
I just signed up my younger one this week. I paid $125.

I wish they had this at my kids' school - a very good use of your money if you ask me!

She starts today, I'm really excited and thanks for giving me more information on the program. The flyers they sent out stressed only the physical activity and none of the self-esteem component. This is turning into something that sounds like a great fit for DD.

I coach GOTR and I think it is a terrific program. The price seems a bit steep but we have scholarships too, and I've even offered to pay for girls out of my own pocket. Money goes towards shirts, snacks, race entry fees, etc. I think it is well worth it!

My oldest dd is at GOTR right now! This is her second year and she loves it. She is not a big runner but you don't really have to be to participate. You all are getting a bargain. Our GOTR is $160.00 plus a $20 - $30 fee for the adult that accompanies them on the run. Each girl has to have one adult with them on the 5K. My sister will go with my DD as she loves to run (marathons). I feel bad asking her to pay the fee so we end up paying it. In the end, it will cost $180.00. They also ask that each girl funraises.

My oldest son does S.T.R.I.D.E. which is the boys equivalent to GOTR. I think it's such a great program for both boys and girls. Our elementary school didn't do it last year so I called the local YMCA and signed him up with another local elementary school for the program, we just had to provide transportation to the other school for him. Several boys from our school did it and we split the transportation.

Both of my daughters have participated (I've run about 12 or 13 GOTR 5Ks). The oldest even became a Jr. Coach last year. I can't think of one negative thing to say about the program.

It is expensive at our school, but very popular! They really need to start one for boys too, the boys at school want this program too.

(I guess I shouldn't have said it was expensive. To us and to some families, it was more than we could afford. To others, it may not be considered expensive.).

I will have to tell some friends that were looking into a program for boys. That would be great if we could get a boys running program at our school. I am on PTO and many moms asked about it at our last meeting.

As a GOTR coach, I'm so excited your daughter is loving the program! I wish there had been something like it when I was a little girl.
If its a stretch financially, there is most often help available. Never hurts to ask. Our local county organization hosts a fundraiser 5k and gets sponsors to help offset costs and sponsor girls in the program.
