I was talking to a friend/acquaintance a couple of weeks ago who has a live in housekeeper. My friend used to be a chef so she does all the cooking. Her two kids are at school all day. I was asking her what on earth her housekeeper did all day. Apparently my friend makes her take the sheets off all three beds everyday and vacuum the mattresses!! WTF! Honestly, I'm a slacker when it comes to housework and it's never even occurred to me to vacuum a mattress. Then I got to thinking there must be some middle ground. So, how often, if ever, do you vacuum your mattress.
FYI - my friend is Korean and was brought up in Indonesia. Not sure if it's a nationality thing or not. My japanese tutor has a special machine to heat her mattress to kill bedbugs. I'd never heard of that before.

I don't. I never even heard of people doing this. I do know someone who runs Pine Sol in a bucket with hot water and scrubs her mattresses then lets them air dry. She does this weekly.

I've done it about twice in my entire adult life - and I can't even remember what prompted it now!!

At one time it seemed to be part of the yearly Spring clean routine and I think quite a lot of people still do it - but not everyday! Good Housekeeping magazine even had an article about vacuuming a mattress and how it should be done regularly, quite recently. And a couple of years ago one of the shopping channels here was selling something that vacuumed and heat treated the mattress, can't remember the name though, just remember reading about it at the time. I do mine when I put a new duvet and pillows on the bed just so I feel I've done a complete job.

I'm 42 and have never heard of vacuuming a mattress except for from one friend who has a very hairy DH. She said she has to vacuum her bed daily to control the hair.

Very occasionally, like a couple of times a year maybe. Normally I'm prompted to do it when I turn the mattress over or I've read an article about how much dead skin that is deposited on a mattress even though it's covered by a sheet!!

Mine gets it a couple of times a year, but only because my son seems to frequently throw up in MY bed. I have a mattress pad, but sometimes it gets through. When that happens, I sprinkle baking soda all over it for the day and then vacuum it up. Only the top gets vacuumed.

Never. It has a mattress protector on it. I take that off and wash that a few times a year.

About once a year I take a scrub brush and sprinkle ammonia water to the mattress, but that's about it. I do the same with the upholstered furniture and the rugs (I have hardwood floors) as well. It helps with residual odors and makes everything smell fresh. I don't vacuum anything daily, I am lazy that way.

I have never heard of such foolishness. Sometimes I wonder if people like making more work for themselves. Crazy.

I have a pillow top now so I can't flip it but I do rotate it about every 3 months. When I do that I sprinkle it with baking soda and vacuum. Once a year I shampoo it and we sleep in the guest room one night to give it time to really dry.

I use an enzyme product that "eats" the dead skin to ward off mites and such. I use it every 2-3 months. The things I learned about mattresses make me want to

We put vinyl covers on the kids beds when they were little, and still use them. We have to replace them every year or so but I like to still use them because I feel it keeps the mattress cleaner. Not sure if it does, just seems like it does. And a few years ago, lice went around the school, so that really made me happy we had the vinyl cover!

I use a mattress cover (with a fitted sheet on top of the cover) and wash it about once every month or two. The sheets I wash once or twice a week. I call that good!

I vacuum our mattresses about once a month. I sprinkle baking soda on there, leave it sit for about 15 minutes and then vacuum it off. It doesn't add but a few minutes to my weekly chores.

I use this product but it is out of stock currently: *disclaimer - my sister does sell it, but I actually introduced her to it. I have been using it for a year and it even helps my husband's allergies and snoring at night. I love it. link

When I change the beds I use a spray that's similar to the one mentioned above. Vacuuming the mattress comes under the heading of 'life is too short for that pompoonery'

I have gone to a few Norex parties recently so I have seen this and wondered if that was the product you used. However, how do we really know that is what it is doing? There is nothing that we can do to validate this claim. My mattress won't "feel" cleaner, kwim? Just curious...

Bet you a dollar that housekeeper doesn't do it every day. Who would know?
I do it when I notice that there's crumblies on the bed. Probably from the dog or eating in bed.

Where do I fall short? Oh let me count the ways (quick list, off the cuff) -Daily changing of hand towels. Or rather, decorative towels only. Nope. -Weekly (or more often) changing of bed sheets. Nope. -Not washing hands in your kitchen sink, because the kitchen sink will get dirty. Nope -Company ready, 24/7. Nope. -No menstruating in the shower. Oops. -Foot flushing, although I wasn't clear if that was only in public places. It never occurred to me to shut the toilet lid to prevent spray throughout my bathroom. -Scrubbing the grout lines on your tiled floor - DARK grout people, its your new best friend!! lol, yes I clean it occasionally. Daily? Not a chance. Weekly? Not even. -And now vacuuming your mattress. Only after we move houses. I know the OP was saying this vacuuming was excessive, but I didn't realize this was even a thing. So it makes me wonder if, when there are posts that talk about cleaning habits - do most peas nod their heads in complete understanding, or are they scratching their heads thinking WTF? (I will say this post is meant as a joke, but I do often wonder if people are posting how they would LIKE to keep their house clean, rather than what actually happens. Because I can't be that poor at time management - there is just no way I could get it all done...)

There is nothing that we can do to validate this claim. My mattress won't "feel" cleaner, kwim? Just curious... I know what you mean. I just noticed that after 2 months or so that my DH's snoring/wheezing in his sleep was reducing. He wasn't having to use his inhaler when he woke up. Prior to that he was the same over the last 10 years I have known him. So for me, I was basing my happiness on it that his condition seems to be better in that regard. He still has allergies and has to use his inhaler, just not first thing in the morning. I haven't used a microscope to see if it is working or anything though I'm tempted to buy a new pillow and use it regularly and see if it still increases in weight they say they do - doubles in a year or something? I forget off hand.
