I went to get my left groceries yesterday. The first eight items on the receipt were the ones I left. The lady at the service counter was very rude, IMO, even though I was very nice, took total responsibility and told her I had called the day before with the name of the person I spoke with. It was strange. She looked me right in the eyes and just stared at me not saying a word. I got the strong opinion she thought I was lying. I guess she was just doing her job.
I got my groceries so that's all that matters and lesson learned for me.
I came home from the grocery store minus two bags of food. According to my receipt the first 8 or 9 items are missing.
I called the store and I will get it all tomorrow. But I just wondered, should I have been watching more closely even though I was showing my shopper appreciation card, getting my debit card back in my purse and sort of watching the person bagging it all?
Just curious what you think. And wouldn't you know the two bags or so that was left had most of tonight's dinner in it. Grrrrrrr.

I think it's just an accident. No fault needed.

Around here, when the items are bagged, the bag then goes into the cart to go to your car. The bagging person should have put them in your cart. Seems that either you or the store employee would have noticed 2 bags left behind.
Is your store so far away you can't go get the items tonight?

I guess both of you. If there is no bag person, than it is her/his job to make sure all items are in a bag and cart if he/she puts ilthe bag into your cart.
It falls solely on you if you bag and cart.
But you should have also made sure all tye bags were in your cart.
I do not get anything out until the cashier tells me my total. I watch the screen and cashier. Then after I pay I make sure all my items and bags are in the cart.

If blame must be assigned, you. Yes, you were getting your purse back together but you could have also taken a moment to look at the bagging area to see if all the bags were in your cart. Most times the cashier is expected to start ringing the next person while the bagger finishes the previous person. Some stores ask the cashier to stop ringing and help the bagger. So store expectations come into play (and you may not know what those are)

I vote cashier. But I've been burned enough that I try to remember to look around and make sure they put it all in. I think that is their job- to ring stuff up, bag it, and put it in my cart (at least the stores I go to).

Around here the cashiers do not leave their little cubby holes, so I would say it is on you. But I also think the cashier should have been observant and noticed you walking away without two of your bags. Chalk it up to an accident on both ends.

Hard to say without knowing the store.
But in general, I'd say it's shared responsibility.

I really don't think it is something that I would think too much about blame for. I've left behind bags before too but it isn't something that I would blame the cashier for, I should be taking notice of what I'm takeing out of the store. We don't have baggers here so we put the bags into our trolleys generally as the cashier goes along.

I always feel like its my responsibility to make sure I have all my bags. Me too. But, it would have been nice if the cashier checked, and made sure you didn't leave without those two bags. BUT... if there was a designated bagger, it IS their job, and I would change my answer to 100% their fault for not ensuring that all your bags were with you.

I think it is a shared responsibility but I appreciate the cashiers that make sure all the bags are gone. For instance, if the bags are on one of the turning things, I like it when the cashier gives it a quick spin to make sure all bags with groceries are gone. I also turn the bag holder around if the cashier doesn't to make sure I have everything. If there is not a turning thing and groceries are being bagged by a bagger, I expect the bagger to put the bag in my cart when they bag the groceries. If the cashier is bagging in a bag holder that is behind him/her and I can't reach it, I expect them to hand it out to me as they fill the bag or complete the order.
However, I also prefer to use self checkout, bag my own and put my own stuff in the cart and leave. I can almost always do it faster if I don't have to wait behind others also using self checkout. I also like to bag my own because I tend to bag in a way that it is easy for me to put away.

I agree- if there is a designated bagger then I agree it's on them. I never see designated bagger people in stores anymore I also hate how WalMart as the bagging turn table thing. I'm always turning it to make sure I have all my bags and I feel like it annoys the clerk people lol

Ultimate responsibly is you. While I'm sure the cashier is told to make sure all the bags are taken, you should always do a once over to make sure you have your bags, purse and debit card. Under no circumstances should you assign blame when you retrieve your missing stuff. It was an accident and you let it go and learn for the future.

According to my DH it's my fault! This has only ever happened to me at a smaller, not very busy Wal-Mart in the next town but it happened THREE times in a row. I had a different cashier each time and all three took a bag or two off the carousel and sat it down by their feet. I buy $250-300 worth of groceries at a time. I'm not finished unloading my cart by the time they have the first few bags filled and from where I stand in the checkout lane I don't come close to being able to see their feet. I normally buy my groceries at Kroger and have never had it happen there...only the one tiny Wal-Mart. It frustrates me to no end. Short of unloading a few things, stopping to watch what the cashier is doing then walking around the counter and checking out behind the desk I can't see what is by their feet.

I always bring my own bags.
It's much easier to see if any are missing that way.
As the cashier finishes loading each bag she hands it to me and I put it in my cart. Once everything is loaded in a bag and all bags are in my cart, then I pay.

I can be a real dingbat sometimes, and I forget stuff all the time. I usually accept that it is my fault for not paying attention. And Publix is great really, if I show up with my receipt, they just hand over the forgotten items. But I will be honest, more than once I had to go back to Publix with my head hanging in embarrassment because I simply forgot to take the items into the house from the car and had them the whole time. They generally don't even take the stuff back.

How annoying.
We do still have baggers at the stores I shop most often, but I still do the scan before leaving and consider it my responsibility. I've been in the store when they realize something is left behind by the person ahead of me and always send someone running, but they don't always catch the person.

I think it's a both of you or neither of you type of situation. If you can be distracted and not notice your bags, then it seems reasonable that by a bad stroke of luck that the cashier could just as easily be distracted at the same time. Sorry it was your dinner items. So typical!

I don't hold anyone responsible. It's a pain, because you have to go back tmw and it contained your dinner items, but it's the small stuff of life. Take it in stride and order a pizza!

I'm changing my answer to the employees in your case if they are putting your bags by their feet. I've never had baggers or cashiers put my groceries on the floor. That just seems dumb. The bags should be either on the counter or in the cart.
