How sore was your child's mouth when they got braces put on?
My daughters friends are all telling her she won't be able to come back to school tomorrow.
Did you child have to miss a whole day of school to get their braces on?
I figured she wouldn't want to eat lunch so I would get her some soup before I take her back.. your experiences?
Thanks

I can only speak for myself, when I got them put on about 4 years ago I couldn't eat regular solid food, but I was fine to go to work the next day. They felt weird, but they didn't hurt. Just make sure she has dental wax with her in case they start rubbing a sore spot somewhere.

My DD got hers on in December. Her mouth was a little sore just after they finished, but a couple hours later and the next couple days were worse. Nothing Advil and soft foods couldn't handle. I let my DD stay home the rest of the day, but that was only because the appointment was later in the school day anyway.

Depending on what time they were put on, I may or may not make a kid go back to school to school that day-but that is mostly because the appointments can be pretty long and it might not make sense timing-wise. But the next day? Oh heck yeah. It isn't as if they had major surgery. Signed, Mom who wore braces, and had two kids in braces.

My kids aren't to the braces ages yet, but I vividly remember getting mine put on. It didn't hurt at first, but as the day wore on the pain increased a lot. It was like a pressure pain on my teeth nit did not help that my orthodontist put a chain on my top and bottom teeth. Those bitches hurt even after you've had braces for a while, let alone right out the gate! I remember crying because my mom refused to cater to my hurt mouth with soft foods. I got mine on the day before thanksgiving and she insisted I eat what everyone else ate, even though our hostess offered to make me a smoothie instead. It was horrid. I didn't eat for a few days. I probably could have sat through school though. I wouldn't suggest getting them put on during finals week, but for regular school it's probably ok.

My dd just got hers on last month. Her appt was at 9:00, we were done by 9:30. I let her take the day off, more as a treat than because she was in pain. I just gave her Tylenol and Motrin for that day and the next and she was fine. She did go to school the next day, I sent the meds with her. I also gave her the meds before she went to the ortho so they were already on board.
ETA My son was a little different, he did miss 1 day after getting his on. He doesn't handle pain as well as dd, plus he got them put on much later in the day. All kids are different. Mine rarely miss school, so I didn't have a problem with letting them miss.

DDs were fine- i think the ortho told us to give them tylenol or something for the pain before they got to the ortho's office, so it would be in their system before the pain started. The office also gave out certificates for free DQ blizzards at the first visit (since there was a Dairy Queen close to the ortho), to help with the pain.
They couldn't eat bread at first, b/c of some of the metal they had in their mouths, I think.

My daughter has not missed school due to braces yet. I hung around the first day back (parents are very welcome in the classroom) and grabbed her a shake for lunch and she did fine. I also have meds kept in the nurses office for her if she needs them after adjustments. They call me to make sure she can take them (in case she had a dose that morning).

My kids both had theirs put on during the summer, but I would have had no problem letting them miss the remainder of that first day with braces on. First off, even if they aren't in "pain", there will be some discomfort. Plus, they need to get used to wearing them since it will affect their speech at least a little bit. No sense making them even more self conscious of it if they have a hard time with it.
And I'm not someone who lets them stay home for every little thing, but for this I would have done so.

No, he did not. His braces made his mouth too sore to eat home cooked meal I made, but not sore enough that he couldn't eat the hamburger that his nana bought him. IOW, she was played.

If I'm reading this correctly, your dd is getting her braces put on tomorrow and you want to know if she'll feel up to going back to school after her initial appointment?
It really depends on her, the time and length of the appointment and her pain tolerance. My dd had braces and just got them off. She never missed school for adjustments but I don't think we sent her back to school the first day she got them just because you are out of sorts, your mouth is sore and it's nice to just come home and rest. I don't remember the time of that first appointment, but she is in high school so her school lets out fairly early in the afternoon.

Give her Advil before he ortho appt, leave some at the school office for her, and make sure she has soup or mashed potatoes for her lunch. I've never heard of someone having to miss school for getting braces on, but they can be quite painful at first.

Ibuprofen or Tylenol. Soft foods for the first few days She shouldn't need to stay home from school
I got braces when I was 22. It was painful, but not unbearable.

Her appointment is at 9.30am. The school can not give even tylenol unless you have a prescription for it! I'm going to give her some before we go...
I told her I'd take her for a smoothie or soup before back to school. I 'm just trying to decide if I should just let her stay home. She has a voice lesson in the afternoon, but thats already planned to not sing.
I guess I will just play it by ear.

I just got my braces off last Monday. When I got them on, I was sore for a few days and had to stick to soft foods. Nothing that Aleve couldn't take care of though... Definitely never missed school (I'm working on my bachelors) or work.

My daughter got braces almost a year ago and she was expecting to be sore afterward, but wasn't. She had very little discomfort when she first got them, and we've never heard of anyone missing school due to being sore.
She goes in every month for adjustments, and does experience soreness with that, and will lay off certain foods for the day that make it hurt, but by the next day she is always fine.

Three of my kids and myself all had braces and never missed any school. Soft foods and tylenol did the trick. My eldest daughter had far more pain with the Herbst device and still missed no school. She was unable to play her clarinet successfully for a few days but never missed any classes. That being said, if one of my kids had gotten braces on during school day hours (they didn't) I probably would have let them play hooky and we would have done something to celebrate their first day towards a new smile. I did do this a couple of times with appointments.

I let my daughter have the rest of that day off school, because it was about midday anyway. She was fine to go to school the next day.

Our DSs wanted to return to school. Give her Tylenol prior to the appointment, so that it will be in effect when the discomfort settles. She won't want to eat much for a few days though. My DSs ate a lot of jello, applesauce, pudding, baked potatoes, etc. for several days.

I had the original iron bar braces and didn't GET to miss any school. Both of my kids had them. The spacers were worse than the braces and they didn't get to miss school either. Told them to take some Advil and they would be fine. My youngest had them on for 6 years. Ugh. His smile is gorgeous now.

I let my dd stay home the next day. She was miserable and Tylenol/Motrin makes her sleepy. So it was a soft foods and glare at mom kinda day.

He had them on in the morning and we didn't make him go back to school. However, he was back to school the next day with Advil onboard.

That made me laugh! I had those too. HOLY HECK they hurt! I couldn't eat solid food for days and couldn't stand a spoon to touch my teeth every month for a couple days after they were tightened. I lived on Campbells chicken noodle soup (heated in a pan on the stove not a microwave because of the radiation my mother was sure would kill us if we got that new fangled gadget!) The spacers were AWFUL.
Times have changed, I guess.

My son was fine the first day, it was the next day that really hurt. He had his in the summer so no school. Cold foods are better than hot. Really depends on what they do and how much. Rubber bands can make it sore too. Are they doing uppers and lowers? Make sure you have wax on hand for sore spots also.
I would make sure to get a doctor's note for tylenol or advil for school and have them give it to her at specified times hopefully before it starts hurting again. Make sure to give her the pain med the night when she gets it and in the morning and around the clock the first 2 days or so.

My DD experience was that she was a little sore immediately after the appointment (probably from having her mouth open for so long), but the braces "aching" and pain started several hours later and for a couple days. I had her stay home after the appointment, but she went to school the next day and tool Tylenol/Advil regularly for a couple days for the "aching". In her experience, if she took the Tylenol/Advil on a regular schedule, before the pain was what she considered unbearable, she was much more comfortable.
