If you've had a kidney stone, where did the pain start and what did it feel like? Did the pain ever subside or did it get gradually worse as the day/night went on? Trying to decide if I should head to the ER tonight. I'd say the pain is around a 4-5. The only reason I hesitate to go is because some kind of stomach bug is working its way through our family and I really don't want to go to the hospital just to be told I'm full of poop.

I just got back from the ER with a UTI and two stones. The pain was off and on. I felt like I was going to vomit. But I couldn't. Pain was lower part of stomach left side. Pain would get to a 8 and then about a 3. I didn't want to go to er either. My doctor told me to go to er since that is all she would do. I gave urine blood and had a CT. 3.5 hours later I'm so glad I went. Hope you feel better.

Mine was the worst pain I'd ever experienced, at the time. Began with a dull ache in my lower back, and became worse as the pain moved to my side. I was literally doubled over, crying in pain. Got pain meds at the ER after confirmation of kidney stones. Passed them naturally over the following 2 days, and had them one other time after that. I recall the ER doc told me kidney stone pain in similar to labor pains. Regardless, kidney stones are horrible.
If your pain worsens, I'd head to the ER.

Mine started with a feeling like a sore muscle in my side, but very quickly escalated. The first time it felt like I was being carved up from the inside. The pain with that one had sweat pouring off my head in rivers. The second one started the same but the stone very quickly started to move and I then felt like I had to urinate NOW but that urgent pain didn't stop. The third stone, which was more than 25 years after the second one, started with that more dull pain but I knew immediately that it wasn't just a sore muscle. The pain would come in waves, and people often describe it as being like labor in that way. It was like that for a friend of mine who had her first stone attack last spring. The pain has brought strong men to their knees.

Mine was caused by dehydration. I thought it was period cramps at first. Then the pain grew increasingly worse and expanded out in a radial like manner. For me it did not get better but much worse. I think I debated with myself for nearly 2 hours before driving myself to the ER.
Like someone else said, I had never been in pain like it. Even labor pains paled by comparison.

If you have a stone and the pain subsides chances are it stopped moving. When it moves is when you feel the pain. I've had two, DH has had three. I'd rather have a baby. Hope you feel better soon.

I feel your pain, literally. Mine started at about 11 pm Saturday night. I still haven't passed it. I'm trying to figure out at which point I go back to the ER. I see my GP tomorrow. If you're only at a 4-5, it could be a small one, and you'll pass it on your own. The only reason to go in is because the pain is unbearable. All they can really do is confirm that it's a stone and give you pain meds. If it gets stuck and you need medical intervention, you will be in unbearable pain.
My pain level at the time I went in was 8-9 with a few episodes of 10. I haven't vomited in 12 years, but I vomited 8 times that night. Now I'm keeping the pain at bay with Hydrocodone, but I still have periods of 6-7 pain. Walking/pacing actually helps.

I have not had one, but my husband has had over 30. His pain starts in his back. It comes and goes...as the stone moves. I feel like the male watching a woman in labor. "Is the pain enough that we need to go to the hospital yet?" And I feel awful dozing off to sleep when he is pacing the floor and moaning, but there is nothing I can do until it is time to drive him to the ER.

I have had one - I will be happy to keep that tally at one, thank you very much!! It started out feeling like I pulled something in my back/side, and progressed to intense vomit-inducing pain. And then subsided. Lather, rinse, repeat. I stuck it out for 4 days (much of the time it wasn't that intense), before going to the ER. Mine was the size (I forget what exactly) that was right on the verge of whether it would pass on it's own, or need intervention. It did pass - 11 days after onset. I think if you continue to have symptoms, it's good to have it checked to know exactly what you're dealing with. There's no time table - some pass quickly, some take a while. Drink lots of fluids if you are able, and get checked if the pain doesn't go away. You do want to make sure you don't also have a kidney infection - that can become bad news very quickly. Feel better!

I had one 7 years ago and I don't remember how it started. What I do remember is I was in so much pain, I could not get comfortable in any position...walking, sitting, laying, sitting... nothing... I could not keep anything down, so could not take pain meds. Ended up calling the nurse hotline at 2 am and she told me to go into the ER. I would not have been able to drive myself. Never want to repeat it again, but according to the dr, there is a second one waiting...

This was bout my experience except I was pregnant ... And didn't have any pain meds. My natural childbirth a month later was not painful at all compared to the two pea-sized stones I passed. if pain gets worse, I'd go in. feel better soon!

Hubby has had them since he was in his early teens, now in his mid 40's and most of his start in his lower back and radiate to his front. His pain is so severe he buckles over when they get lodged, when they are moving it is more tolerable. When he has a full fledged attack it is almost unbearable to watch him go thru it because he is a rough and tough kinda guy any other time, I have seen him cry with the last few he had. With his last they found it was the size of an eraser on a pencil ugh, when they crushed it and put in the stint it was almost drove him to lose it, he said it was so painful ugh.
Hope you are able to get some relief!! He found the best pain relief was by suppositories even though he was uncomfortable getting meds that way he found that they worked the fastest.

Are you sure it's kidney stones? Maybe gal stones? Are you puking/fevers etc. I waiting till I was puking and high fevers before I went for gal stones but it took 4 trips before we figured it all out and got them all. My siblings have all had them either gal stones or kidney. My sister had her Kidney stones at the same time I had mine- 4 total stones they took my gal bladder and my appendix and part of my liver. It was all infected .She ran high fevers but also had a nasty infection. Myinfection didn't come till they got the 2nd stone out. Kidney stones you either have to pass them on their own or have them blasted. My sister had them blasted. They tried the stint but it didn't work. The ER can just give you pain meds and do the test to confirm what it is and even then sometimes it takes more than once.

I'm finding this so interesting. I had a kidney stone that stuck and rotted through the tube. After surgery I had a sudden cardiac arrest. I lost all memory of the actual kidney stone. But I've read what I wrote about it and it was bad. I guess I told my family that if they wouldn't treat me at ER that final time they could have me arrested as I wasn't leaving. I'd been in to ER several times without getting help.
Hope it passes quickly for you.

I have had 4 kidney stones over the years. It's awful. The pain started right around my belly button for me and then radiated to my lower back. Then I started feeling like I had to urinate but going to the bathroom provided no relief. Then the waves of continuous pain at different levels. I tried to avoid the ER the last time and went to urgent care. They gave me IV fluids and a prescription for pain meds. I went home, took as many as the pain meds as I was able to, drank a lot of fluids and then ended up in the ER anyway several hours later. The pain was so bad that my teeth were chattering and I had the shakes. Got the pain under control (read: they knocked me out),stayed most of the night in the ER, was sent me home and I passed the stone later that day. I would rather give birth to a litter than have another kidney stone. Hope you are feeling better and are able to get checked out soon!

It was so bad I couldn't stand up all the way. It was horrible. Way worse then when I went to the ER for my gallbladder and that was pretty awful too.

I have had two kidney stones, and with the first one, I was laying on the tile floor panting like a dog and if someone would have shot me, it would have felt good! I recently had a scan for a different issue that shows there's another kidney stone in one of my kidneys, just waiting to hit me. I didn't go to the hospital for the second one...I knew I had the kidney stone walk...pissin' blood. It feels like a meteor pushing it's way through a tube the size of a strand of hair. It only hurts until it gets to your bladder

OP, hoping you're much better by now and that it was something minor and not a kidney stone. Please let us know how you're doing.
