I was driving on a stressful highway a couple of days ago and was chewing my cheek as it seems to be a family trait. I got something at the pharmacy to put on it. I had to read the directions how to use the product. I had to wear my cheat glasses to see it. I am at the point where i didn't need them yet. Didn't being the operative word. Did your vision suddenly deteriorate? I think mine is going rapidly if i couldn't read this. (I am a wimp as everyone in my family and extended family all wore very strong glasses. Just I got good vision). But I am whining because I can. My glasses are cute though and they are pink!

I had to read your first few sentences to understand what you meant by cheats. I forgot that was a nickname. I call them reading glasses.
No, I don't wear them. I wear regular glasses all the time. I am near sighted so I take them off to read. My eyesight became horrible from 8th grade through my first year of college then it seemed to remain the same up until this year. It changed slightly enough I needed new glasses.

Near-sighted contact lens-wearer here...yes, I started needing to use reading glasses/cheaters about 5 years ago. If I've already taken my contacts off for the evening (I use daily wear lenses), then I can just take off my prescription glasses to see small font sizes. So, I only need the reading glasses for reading & computer work while I'm wearing my contacts.

Couldn't figure out what the title meant. I thought maybe you misspelled cleats.

That might be a local word for reading glasses. It is what we use all the time. I will edit the title...sorry about that

I have heard people refer to reading glasses as cheaters but not cheats. I wear glasses full time and have since I was 12. So I don't foresee a time in my life when I will ever not be wearing some form of glasses.

Yeah, I have about 4 pairs in various places. I had 20/20 vision until I was about 45. I don't need glasses other than to read things close up.

Yes, I usually use my reading glasses when I'm actually reading the paper or my Kindle. Otherwise I don't need them.

Yes, my vision seemed to go rapidly downhill at about age 46. I have worn contacts since I was a teen, but never had any significant issues with reading or fine print. Then, boom, it seemed like overnight, it was so much more difficult. My optometrist said it was perfectly normal. She adjusted my contact prescription so that I was no longer wearing the same prescription in both eyes, but rather one contact with more correction than the other one. That did help somewhat with the near vision, but I still wear "cheaters" when I read fine print.

In my purse, in my desk at work, in my bedroom, in the family room, in the kitchen - I have a couple of "good" pairs - one nice pair of Brighton glasses I keep at work, and one that has better than average lenses that I keep near my spot in the family room for working on the computer at night. The rest are super cheap pairs that I don't mind breaking or misplacing.

Yep I think we determined that 45 is the magic number for needing reading glasses. I hated it because I need regular glasses for astigmatism. Now I have progressive lenses. I need a new prescription for both
ETA I meant to say I needed two pairs of glasses. I was constantly switching. I hated it.

I am 42 and I just got my eyes checked the other day. I still have fairly good vision, but I'm finding fine print a bit difficult to read unless I'm in bright light. I also wear distance glasses for night driving. The girl asked if I want bifocals and did I want the lined ones! WTF? I bought two pairs of glasses...I am too damn young for bifocals.

Yes, I have various pairs of these all over the house (in almost every room, and 2 in my office/craft room - 1 at the computer & 1 at the craft worktable)...most are el cheapos (cheapie cheaters??) with a couple of better quality (& better looking) ones to carry in my purse and for work.

At every eye exam since I started using reading glasses (about age 48), they've tried me with a couple of different types of progressive lenses and/or bifocals. Hated them all (and some just didn't even fit me right, or didn't come in a size that would fit my eyes)...so I keep on sticking with the daily wear contacts & reading glasses. I would also hate switching glasses back & forth so I sympathize with you...I have a hard enough time in the summer when I have to choose between reading glasses and sunglasses because I'm too cheap to get the expensive sunglasses with reading correction.

I wear contacts for nearsightedness and cheaters for reading. I also have 2 pairs of progressive lense bifocals for when I am not wearing my contacts. It has been this way for about 5 years now.

I've worn them for almost a year now, I hate the switching back and forth with my other glasses. My readers are cute though, black and lime green.

Well, I'm busting the curve because I am 54 and still holding out on needing readers. I occasionally wish for them when I do the Wall St Journal crossword puzzle - ha! But in general, I still see okay without them. Emphasis on "okay." I can tell the day is approaching that I'll have to give in.

I have a bunch of them in a number of strengths. I started out with #1 and now am at the 2.75. I wear a #1 when I am driving to clear road signs up. My opthamologist told me I didn't need prescription glasses and to just buy the Dollar store ones. My husband calls me Fred Sanford as I always have a pile of different strengths for whatever I am doing.

Oh yes, I had to move to reading glasses a few years ago (I'm 52.) I didn't really want to, but it certainly got rid of my headaches at the time. I guess I was straining my eyes.
I think it's funny that my public library keeps a couple pairs at the desk (with some alcohol wipes.) I've had to borrow them more than once.

I work part-time at a jewelry store and they keep them on the counters for customers to borrow as well.

I'm 47 and I've been wearing reading glasses for a few years now ... directions on bottles of things is a particular problem for me but I need them to read my e-reader comfortably as well ... I even have a pair of sunglasses for reading on the beach

I used to wear glasses for near sightedness. I had lasik in 2000. I was 43 years old. I was corrected to 20/20 but the doctor told me I would need reading glasses as I edged toward 50. He said most people need either readers or bifocals. I wasn't far past 50 when yes, I did start needing readers, and now I have several pair all over the house.
When I was nearsighted I could read a penny but couldn't see the TV screen. Now I can see everything except the details right in front of me. But lasik let me join the world without glasses - driving, swimming, being in the rain, so wearing readers as I have aged is a very good trade.

CheatERS here, and yes, I've worn them since around the time I turned 40. I only need a 1.25 strength but I really notice if I read or use the computer a lot without them.
