My husband and I are thinking about taking our baby - who will be 10 months old at the time - to Disney this summer. We'll probably stay at the boardwalk. We're both fine with not spending the whole day at the parks, maybe just a few hours and then spending most of our time at the pool. so....are we crazy??? I'm a guidance counselor so the summer is really the only time we can go, unless we wait until next year.
Any opinions and/or tips are much appreciated!

I think I would wait a year. Your child will get more out of it IMO. I took my kids for the first time around 2 and the pics. are priceless! August will be hot and crowded but if it's only your time, then you have to work with what you can do.

I personally wouldn't go in August. We went in January and the weather was perfect. While the 10 month old would enjoy it, I think he/she would get more out of it if you waited a year.

You lost me at August.
Crowds (that's during peak time), heat, hurricane season.
We always do Disney in the fall.
I would never go in the summer.

If that's where you want to go, go for it. Sure it will be hot but it's not like there aren't babies who live there and do just fine. Plan for breaks, stay hydrated. Go to the parks early in the morning and later in the afternoon. A lot of the buildings are super air conditioned so there are plenty of places to cool off. |

The heat is not the problem, it's the crowds. You can google "crowd calendars" for disney and get a general idea of how crowded it will be. I find them very helpful. We usually go in January-March. My friend was planning on going over New Years and scrapped the plans because of the crowds....3-4 hour waits on rides. Not for me! But I'm allergic to crowds LOL

True enough, I managed to raise two babies right around the corner from Disney...one was even born in July.  Sure it's hot, but if you are ready for it, it isn't horrible. Parks in the morning and late afternoon evening, avoid being out in the middle of the day if you can, drink lots of water, wear the coolest clothes you can, tons of sunscreen and it can be done. |

The humidity would be my main reasons for staying away. The crowds would be secondary and I would expect the pool area to be just as crowded with families as the park. With just the two of you, you are going to be trading off the baby to go on any fun rides and that takes half the fun out of it IMHO.
If you've been that time of year before and know what you are getting into, go for it, but I would be heading to a less humid beach destination.

I think a 10 month old is fine at Disney. August is busy. Of you stay away from rides, you'll still have terrible lines for food, bathroom, entrance, etc.
We go in October or early March and we can just handle the crowds. During the week, lines are 10-15 min if that, on weekends they increase to 30-40 min for popular rides. I don't have the patience to wait longer.
If you truly can't go at another time, and this is your ideal vacation, then I'd go for it. 10 month old will be fine. Heat will be fine.
With a 10 month old, I'd enjoy something slower, like Hawaii (or in that California region, Napa).

My question would be..WHY??!! ha. At 10 mo's what can they do? Can they even go on rides? and your DH and you won't be able to, yea, one at a time. The only thing would be photo ops, and pool time. No thanks. Wait til they are older and do do more.

With an infant, you would be basically be walking around the parks, not really able to participate in attractions. So why go?
Also, you will have to deal with the horror of "baby stroller" parking at Disney. Yeah, not fun.

Agree with the weather. The baby is the easy part!
We took my 8 month old nephew to Disneyworld and that was no problem. I think Disney is fine with young babies. Yes it's more for the parents but we still enjoyed letting him go on the carousel, watch the parade and just hang out with him. Who cares if he's to young to enjoy it...its your decision.

I wouldn't go then but I live in Florida. But you can go on rides. Magic kingdom has a ton that are appropriate and then they have an awesome thing called ride swap. So one can go and then the other can without waiting again. My sister and bil used it last year.

There are a lot of rides without height restrictions they can all go on together....everything in Fantasy Land plus many many others in addition to shows, the parades and fireworks.

We went in August and didn't find it that bad. Sure it's hot, but almost everything is air conditioned. We brought our food in, so the lines weren't really an issue. And we didn't find it overly crowded, either. If you go near the end of the month, a lot of kids are already back in school or have started their sports, etc. Like I said, we really didn't find the crowds overwhelming at all.
My issue is w/the 10 month old. Like others have said, they won't enjoy it (or remember it), you'll be at the mercy of their schedule and you & your husband can't do very many things together, since one of you will have to stay w/the baby for a lot of the rides. I'd wait a year or two.

I wouldn't for three reasons: the crowds, the weather and the fact that the baby will get in the way of pretty much any enjoyment of being at the parks.

I don't know how much fun will be had given the conditions. #1. Ten month old Diapers/food/naps #2. Heat in August - unless you live in a similar climate and are adjusted to the heat #3. Ten month old Diapers/food/naps #4. Possibility of summer storms ruining the trip #5. Ten month old  Obviously, I'd make a different selection, but it is YOUR vacation--do what you wish. |

We went in August a couple years ago. I thought we were crazy at first. However, I found it very manageable. We got there early (like 45 minutes before park opening), used Ride Max for ride plans and easywdw.com to pick which park on which days and other tips. Made ADRs and had a list of all the counter service places with AC. By getting their early, we had time to hit up all our must do rides by lunch. Then we ate lunch at the parks and then headed back to the hotel for a swim and nap. Had a dinner ADR or ate off property and went back for a night time show or a few more rides. The parks were a 8 or 9 level for crowds. Our longest line was 20 minutes for It's a Small World and that was because we rode it spur of the moment and it wasn't on our original plan.
So...crowds are manageable.

Honestly, with a 10month old, I'd wait at least a year...maybe even 2.
A 10 month old is going to spend much time in the stroller. Sure, you can keep the sun off of them with covers or canopies. But they're going to be hot. Uncomfortable. Probably crying.
I'm not sure WDW sounds like a fun time with a 10month old at a cooler, less busy time of year.
So in summary...I'd wait a year...maybe 2. |

I would totally bring a baby to Disney. I remember taking Alison places at that age - it was so fun for me to watch her watching everything. If this is going to be your one and only trip, I'd wait, but if you are going to do Disney every year or two years, go for it. My brother remembers hardly anything from his trip at age 5 or 6, so, with some kids, you have to get pretty old before they really remember it. That isn't a deal breaker for me. August is not my favorite choice because of heat, but you can manage crowds anytime with enough planning. Crowds in August start moderately heavy (but way less than Christmas or New Years) and then get lower as the month goes on and more schools start. In my opinion, there is no longer a truly light time at Disney. When I went in September - one of the lightest months - there were people everywhere, and Disney often runs rides at half capacity during slower times (like one side of Space Mountain rather than both). You could also consider Thanksgiving. It is an extremely crowded week, but with a baby, I really don't think you'll want to do everything. They can go on any ride without a height limit, and you can use rider swap if there are other rides you both want to do. Bringing an Infant to Disney World |

We did one trip to Disney in the summer and it was in August. It was so humid I could have melted. Our kids were pre-teen and teenagers. They didn't seem to mind. Not sure how the baby would handle it.

I am going this august too, for much the same reasons. Its the only time I can coordinate with my 2 older children (19 & 16) so they won't miss any school. Hot weather is okay with me, and the crowds are anticipated to be lower than July. There are a lot of other great things to do in Orlando and area so you don't have to go to the parks everyday. Enjoy your vacation!

If summer is the only time you can go and that is what you want to do then do it.
Yes the 10 month old isn't going to remember it but who cares, you will.
Honestly it doesn't get any easier when they are older. Then they whine, are heavier and want carried or harder to push in stroller, tantrums, etc.
The 10 month old will get hot and fall asleep in the stroller so you can push them around and stop and have a quiet lunch somewhere.
Go to the parks as soon as they open and stay until lunch time. Then back to the pool. You can always go back later. (We usually go back one night maybe two)
go to the disboards. I think they have a message board for families. People will have tons of tips.
Get your tickets now if you can and book fast passes for rides or meet and greets that you want.

I live in SF and would not go in August after the one time I did. It is HOTTER THAN HELL! Sweltering, nauseating, unbearably hot.

I'd go to the parks during the early parts of the morning, and later parts of the afternoon and evening to stay cool enough. I think it will be fun with the baby because he/she can be pushed in a stroller (and contained!), take naps, given easy snacks, drink from a sippy/bottle, not pester you for expensive souvenirs. And will be cooperative for all the photo opportunities. You'll have a blast! |

It would depend on the circumstances. But then, I toured Beijing with a 3 & 5 year old. I wasn't one to not do something just because I had a child with me. I did Disneyland with a 4 & 6 year old the week before Christmas. It was a dream--great weather, very small crowds, and I'm not a big ride person. We split up with the kids and I took DD to a lot of the shows and story times. I took her stroller and was able to have juice and snacks with us all the time.
Are you already going to be in the area? Do you go to Disney often? Is the baby an easy going baby or does he/she do better with a schedule? Does the crowd or heat bother you?
If this is the one and only time you will go to Disney for years and years, I would say wait. A baby won't have that sense of wonder at Cinderella/Buzz Lightyear/Mickey, because he/she won't have seen the movies yet. That was a lot of the fun for me--both kids were big believers and it was truly magical to watch them meet their favorite characters. If you go to Disney often and won't feel pressured to do much, go for it. You will be back again when the magic is there for the baby.
